It looks like the Confederations Cup could be scrapped in favour of an expanded Club World Cup.  This has been rumoured for a while now but Infantino has finally spoken of it.

Secondly, instead of holding biannual u17 and u20 world cups, there will instead be a single 48 team annual youth world cup.

“The current Club World Cup is a nice competition but it has not really had the impact that was hoped in development of club football around the world,” Infantino told the press conference that followed last week’s FIFA Council meeting in India.

“We have to see if we can come up with something special, something new which will help club football and confederations all around the world.

“When FIFA organises a competition, it should be something special, so either we find a special tournament or we’d rather not do it. One option could be to organise it instead of the Confederations Cup. That’s an idea. We will discuss it.”

FIFA may alter the structure of future youth World Cups from 2019 onwards, merging the existing World Cups at U-17 level and U-20.

“After that we are planning to merge the U-17 and U-20 World Cups into a bigger one, the format will be changed to 48 teams competing and held annually,” said the FIFA president. “So, a big country like India can think of hosting a huge event like this alone or co-host with some other smaller countries.”
