On Wednesday, after months of negotiations, Cole finally signed a deal to join the Rowdies until the end of the 2017 season, with a one-year option to extend.

“It’s a very exciting time for me,” said Cole, who has moved from Coventry City. “I’ve always envisaged playing in the United States at some point in my life and this opportunity came up. My family and I came out to visit a few months ago and everyone was lovely, they really made us feel welcomed. I’m really excited to get started and I want to be part of a successful team.

Joe Cole meets his new fans at Tampa Bay

Former Coventry City midfielder Joe Cole made his debut for North American Soccer League side Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday night.

The 56-cap England international was pleased to get through the full 90 minutes after a 22-game season with the Sky Blues.

“I enjoyed it,” Cole said. “We should have won the game. But we’ll win more games than we lose, that’s for sure. I thought we were the better side. I think there is a good team in the making here.”

Minnesota lost its second straight match and missed another opportunity to pick up precious points as the English star Joe Cole led Tampa Bay to an emphatic 2-0 victory at the NSC Stadium in Blaine, Minn., on Saturday night.

Cole scored his first NASL goal in the 43rd minute when he powered a header past Minnesota (4W-1D-3L, 13 points) goalkeeper Sammy Ndjock from a nifty cross by Kalif Alhassan.
