Rookie players help Quebec Amiral keep their playoff hopes alive despite injuries to key players as Amiral defeat Ravens by a 1-0 score.

16 year old Joelle Gosselin started her first game in the W-League and played a key role in Amiral victory as she prepared the play that led to Genevievre Marcotte goal in the 65th minute off her own shot rebound. Quebec coach Worth spoke of Gosselin perfomance in the most laudatory terms saying she was her best player on the field, not making any mistake and preparing numerous plays for her teamates. Coming off the bench with 20 minutes to go, 17 years old Lea Chastenay-Joseph also came up with a big performance, seeing two of the balls she centered from right wing redirected by teamates on the crossbar. Chastenay-Joseph and Gosselin are the two Quebec soccer elite league leading scorers in the U18 category with respectively 21 and 12 goals in just 8 games so far this season.

Myriam Bouchard also posted a strong performance for the Amiral. Amongst other things she stopped a shot towards the end of the first half of the game while covering Amiral goalkeeper Marie-Pierre Bilodeau that had been unable to stop a Raven player outside the penalty box. Bilodeau however came up big in the 89th minute, making a great save on a Raven's player shot directed towards the top corner of the net. Win could be costly however as forward Caroline Vaillancourt was injured by a Raven defense player in the penalty area on a play that should have led to a penalty shot in the 26th minute of the game.

Amiral has its destiny in its own hands as they will play division leaders Fury in Ottawa on Sunday. A tie or a loss of rival Lavel Comets against the Ravens on Saturday would also assure them a playoff spot.

We need to have more young players .. move up to play on women's teams.. recently watched a 14 year old and yes shocks of shocks a 12 year old get a run out on a women's team that had two former National team players.. the young ones fit right in, imagine being 12 almost 13 and playing 90 minutes with to national caps beside you .. talk about motivation to move on in the game.. good on the coach in Quebec for bringing in the young ones.

So with Laval defeating the Ravens 3-1 tonight, they are a point ahead of the Amiral. Reading all the tiebreakers it looks like Quebec City must beat the Fury on Sunday afternoon to make the playoffs as a tie would mean the first tiebreaker coming into play: Head to Head results. With Laval having won two and lost one of the three games between QC and Laval, the Comets would finish third and travel to Toronto midweek to face the Lady Lynx in the 2 v 3 matchup. That point Laval picked up in Ottawa on Wednesday was massive as it now forces the Amiral to win instead of just drawing the Fury to reach the playoffs.

The Amiral have no option but to take the game to the Fury in order to win the match. Ottawa has been struggling of late (one win, one loss and two ties in last four games) and really need a good performance to get their game back on track in this final regular season match to at least gain some momentum as they head into the playoffs.

Should be a fun afternoon!
