Premier Men's Division Athens vs City on EastLink Television

On Friday evening EastLink television will present their first of six premier soccer telecasts. This first match will showcase the EastLink Premier Men’s division where HCU Athens will take on Halifax City Coldwell Banker.

The last time these two teams met was on June 1. Athens won 3-2 in back and forth game. Athens struck first with a goal by Harvey Perry 19 minutes into the game. It did not take City long to respond. Brian Francis tied the game up 7 minutes later and then scored again at the 36min mark. The game remained tied going into the 2nd half.

In the 2nd half the game was hard fought by both sides and was close until the 84 minute when Trevor Reddick sealed the game for Athens.

Halifax City will want to make up for their last game. They currently lead the league, having played a few extra games (6-2-1). They also lead the league in goals fore with 29. These goals can be explained by the likings of Brian Francis, Mat Budreski and Dylan Sheehan who are currently tied for the league leaders in goals. Each player has 7 goals in 9 games.

Another City player to watch out for is midfielder Ryan Haughn who was identified as a member of the CIS National Soccer Teams representing Canada at the upcoming World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand.

As for Athens they are currently in a tie for 2nd. They are trailing City by 4 points but we’ll make it clear that the only thing they are trailing is in game played. Athens has been undefeated this season (5-0-0).

Top striker Trevor Reddick left City speechless after the late goal in their last game. He is the top scorer for Athens with 5 goals in 5 games averaging more goals per game then the top City strikers. While Athens has been playing well in all parts of the field much of their success can be attributed to Perry Harvey and the rest of the Athens defence. Athens has only allowed 3 goals on the year, which is quite something compared to City’s 14 goals against.

The key to City’s success will heavily rely on the continuing play of their strikers. Budreski, Sheehan and Francis will all have to play well in order to secure a victory. If they can continue to pound the opposition in scoring they should be able to pull away as they have in previous games.

Athens will have to keep up their strong defencive game. Keeping the top three City scorers off the game sheet will most likely guarantee them a victory. As for Trevor Reddick, Athens will rely on him to keep up his goal a game appearances.

Game time is 7:30 at Mainland North in Halifax. The game can also be watched on EastLink.

Played against Athens 2 weekends ago in St. John's, very good squad. I know they didnt have Mesut but am not sure who else they were missing. We played most of the game up a man and were dominant in the first half, possibly could have been up 2 or 3 nil but full marks to Athens for a very strong second half. Riddick tucked a shot top shelf (man is he strong on the ball) and Ish scored a break on a turnover at center(maybe his first goal in 5 years, haha, jkjk).

All jokes aside great tourny Athens and good luck in the NSSL. See you in Oct.

P.S. : SoccerPro, i believe you play with Athens(not 100% sure). But of you do give B. Francis a knock tomorrow for me will ya.

Cheers

"EastLink Premiership Friday Night Soccer

2007-07-16

In women's action HCU Athens will play Dartmouth United Super City Windows on Friday night 7:30 at Mainland field. This is the first women's telecast of the season.

Friday, July 20th is the 2nd of 5 regular season games that EastLink will telecast. This is the first women’s telecast with Dartmouth United Super City Windows taking on HCU Athens. The winner will take first place in league standings.

The last time the two teams played Athens won by a 1-0 score. Athens (7-0-3) is still undefeated on the season.

Athens came off a big weekend at the Gunn Balderson tournament winning all of their games and winning the Championship game against Halifax City. They played Halifax City again last Thursday evening and won again. However they faltered on Sunday after a disappointing tie to former last place team Halifax Dunbrack. The game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Athens problem on Sunday is similar to previous problems in the year. Athens, while a strong defensive team, does not always score goals. Their recent tie to Dunbrack is another example of their lack of goal scoring. Both of Athens other ties on the year were 0-0 games. While Athens has not scored a significant amount of goals they have very capable players who can do so. Andrea Gillespie, Mary Beth Bowie, and Leanne Huck have each netted 3 goals on the season. With that being said, Athens probably has the best defence in the league. They have only allowed 2GA on the year (both vs Cape Breton in two different games), which is a league low for goals against.

Since Dartmouth’s last game against Athens they have gone 7 games without a loss. They won five of those and tied two. They are coming off a solid 1-0-1 weekend in Cape Breton followed by a 3-0 win over Highland this past week. The key to Dartmouth beating Athens will be breaking through the strong defence of Athens. They have some very capable midfielders and strikers who have the scoring touch but will need to keep up their play to beat Athens. Team scoring leaders Sarah Joseph and Stephanie Power each have 4 goals on the year and will need to finish on some plays to secure a win.

Christina Barreiro is the keeper for DU. She has played more minutes then any other keeper in the league playing 11/13 games. She also has 4 Shut outs on the year. Elissa McCarron and Liz Cook share the net for Athens. Each have a league low 1 goal against (for keepers who have played more then 90min). The two usually go game for game, however, on occasion they will split a game.

If Athens can get on the scoreboard they should be able to rely on their defence for the win. DU’s offence has been a bit more reliable then Athens, however, their defence is up and down. If they can crack the strong defence of Athens they have a chance. The game will probably be a tight strong defencive game. Two goals by either team in this game should seal the victory.

Notes: Leanne Huck of Athens was recently selected to represent Canada in the World University games in Bangkok, Thailand

"EastLink Friday Night Soccer - Showcase Game of the Week

2007-07-24

NSSL – EastLink Premiership Men’s Soccer Dunbrack Premier Van Line’s vs. HFX City Coldwell Banker Friday July 27th, 7:30PM Mainland North #1

Halifax City (7-3-2) host Dunbrack (7-1-0) this Friday July 27th at 7:30 PM on the Mainland Commons. City is leading the league at the moment with 23 points but they have also played four more games then second place Dunbrack who are only two points back at 21 points. The last time these two teams met it was Dunbrack that got the upper hand shutting out the high-powered City side 3-0. A win for Dunbrack will push them to the top of the league while anything less will keep them behind City for the moment.

So far this season City has left it up to their offence to do the talking as they have racked up a league leading 37 goals and have scored three or more in six of their seven wins. Their leading scorers this year have been Mat Budreski, Brian Francis, and Dylan Sheehan who have scored 10, 8, and 8 goals respectively. Also these three scorers sit 2,3 and 4 on the goal-scoring list behind Dartmouth’s Matt Brannon.

With all of these goals City has been a powerhouse up front only getting shutout once this season, which came at the hands of the Dunbrack team they will face again on Friday. Although City leads the league in goals for, they are also a team that has given up 19 goals in their 12 games and although they have played the most games of any of the top six teams they are also second last in goals against out of the six with Dartmouth being the only team to give up more at 20.

Dunbrack on the other hand sits at second spot in the standings and while they have played four less games than City, they have still managed to rack up 30 goals in that time. Of those 30 goals their top scorers are Luke Corey, Danny Bachar, and Dan Fournier who have scored 6, 5, and 4 goals respectively. Although they don’t have the league leading scorers, these three have very good numbers after only 8 games and could be very well comparable to their counterparts on the City side.

With all this goal scoring between these teams you might think that this will be a shootout but Dunbrack has proved to have one of the top defenses in the league this year and have given up a league low three goals while earning the clean sheet six times in eight games. Of the six clean sheets four belong to Kyle Hartlen in his 450minutes in net while the other two are awarded to Jeff Crane in his 270 minutes in the goal.

This game promises to be a great one between two high scoring teams and when the dust has settled we will know who the league leaders are ……for the time being.

Kickoff is Friday 7:30PM at Mainland Commons – Be there !!!

This game will feature a Canteen, operated by Dunbrack U16 Girls and World Cup Music"

EastLink Premiership Friday Night Soccer

Women’s Halifax City Quincy’s vs Scotia Elegant Flooring

Mainland 1 @ 7:30

This Friday night EastLink Premiership Friday Night Soccer will host the 2nd women’s game of the season. Halifax City Quincy’s will take on Scotia Elegant Flooring.

Halifax City currently sits in 2nd place in the league with a 9-2-2 record. The win would put them past Athens by a point to lead the league. Scotia on the other hand has .500 record on the season. With a record of 6-6-1 it puts them in a tie for 4th. Don’t let their standings do all the talking; the last time the two teams met in regular season Scotia downed City in a one – nil game back on June 9. Kelly Burgess scored the loan goal early in the first half and that was enough to clinch it.

As of late both teams have been playing very well. Scotia is currently on a three game winning streaking beating Cape Breton twice 3-2, and 3-0, and Highland 1-0. City has been on fire in their last bit as well. With Katie Prowse leading the league in scoring with 7 goals her team has cruised to victory in all five of their last games. In their last 3 they hammered Dunbrack 5-0 and took a pair of games off Cape Breton 2-0, and 4-2.

The consistent play of keeper Heidi Felderhof has attributed to City’s success as well. With a league leading 8 shut outs on the season she has helped the team pull out a few key victories. In the Scotia net the time has been split between Ashleigh Bellefontaine and Amy Mercer. The two combined have shut their opponents out on five separate occasions this season.

While City seems to be one of the dominant forces this season Scotia defiantly cannot be counted out. For one, the last time the two teams played Scotia won. Another interesting thing to note, Scotia has not lost to a team by more then a goal this season. The game should be a close one.

You can catch the game Friday at Mainland 1 @ 7:30. Halifax City youth soccer will have a BBQ. Frisbees and T-shirts will also be given away.

HCU Athens will battle Dunbrack Premier Van Lines in a fight for playoff seeds.

EastLink Friday Night Soccer

HCU Athens vs Halifax Dunbrack Premier Van Lines

Friday, August 16, 2007, 7:30 @ Mainland field

This weekend is the final weekend of play in the NSSL. Athens trail Dunbrack by 5 points for first place. With the new system first place gets a bye to the Championship game. Each team has two games remaining. Dunbrack plays Valley, Athens plays Fredericton and they play each other in the EastLink Friday Night Soccer Telecast.

Athens will have to come out all fired up if they want to win. If they don’t, they will not finish in first. On top of that, there is no guarantee that they’ve clinched the 2nd seed either because Halifax City is tied in points.

As for Dunbrack, they need to grab a point in these final two games. A tie against Athens or a win against Valley would do the trick.

The last time these two teams met Dunbrack handed Athens a 2-0 loss. Derek Gaudet’s goal at the ninth minute turned out to be the game winner. He has been a key player for Dunbrack this season. Recently nominated as a league all-star, he has 7 goals to his credit. Other key goal scorers for Dunbrack include Luke Corey who has 8 and Danny Bachar who has 6, both of whom scored in their 3-0 win over Highland on Wednesday evening.

On the downside for Dunbrack they will have to do without defender John Marsh. He received his third yellow card on Wednesday evening and is suspended for the game. To make matters slightly worse for Dunbrack, this will be their 4th game in 7 days. They played Fredericton on Saturday and then played a meaningless game on Monday night. That game in Truro was called in the 80th minute due to rain when Dunbrack was up 2-1. The game was replayed on Wednesday evening where they won 3-0. Now they have to face Athens.

Athens are in a must win situation for first. They also need to ensure they finish ahead of Halifax City which only has one game left to play. If the two teams tie, Athens will get the bye based on the previous games between the two (Athens 1-0-1).

Brain Little has emerged as the leading scorer for Athens with seven goals on the season. While he will play a big part in Athens success there is someone else who is due. Trevor Reddick has not scored since June 1st. He came out smoking early in the season with 5 goals in three games, since then he has been quiet. He has been moved around in different roles for Athens and has made a big contribution to Athens success. There is no question that he is due for goal. Another player who has been stellar all season long is Mesut Mert. With five goals on the season he is one of the best, if not the best midfielder in the league and will need to keep up his top notch play that we have seen this season.

This should be one of the best games of the season. Getting the bye to the championship will make this game so crucial. There is a good possibility you will see these two teams in the championship game next Monday.

Game time is 7:30 @ Mainland Common field on Friday, August 17. You can also catch the game live on EastLink Television, Channel 10 and an encore telecast on Sunday at 2:00."
