Five-year ban for Ajax fans at ADO Den Haag

AMSTERDAM, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Away fans will be banned from watching ADO Den Haag versus Ajax Amsterdam fixtures for the next five years after an attack on the ADO clubhouse last week.

The Mayor of The Hague announced the ban in a statement on Wednesday after discussions between both clubs and cities after 70 Ajax supporters stormed the ADO clubhouse near the Zuiderpark Stadium and attacked 12 fans who were there on Friday night.

Eight ADO fans were injured, including two with stab wounds, and police immediately set up motorway road blocks and arrested 10 Ajax supporters, who are still being held.

'This action (banning away fans) is unavoidable,' said Wim Deetman, Mayor of The Hague. 'What happened on Friday is very serious, and if it had happened outside the world of football it would have been called an all-out assault.'

'When you look at the fact that weapons were found at the Ajax supporters' clubhouse, the fact that ADO supporters were travelling to Amsterdam this weekend, and when you look at the internet traffic, you have to conclude that these people are bringing this on themselves. And in this country that will not be tolerated.'

Following Friday's attack Ajax supporters were banned from attending last Sunday's match with ADO in The Hague, which their team won 2-1. The five-year ban runs through the 2010-11 season.

When Ajax scored in this match you could hear a pin-drop in the stadium. I found that to be strange and figured something must have happened.

I like this quote from the article though: "And in this country that will not be tolerated."

Riiiight! Every</u> season there are fights surrounding the ADO-Ajax fixture. And just now they're doing something about it.
