He only received 76.2% of support from his party members and thought it was therefore time to step down. I think most people knew that he wasn't the man that would lead Quebec to sovereignty, too old and too unsympathetic to undecided voters.

Gilles Duceppe is now the front-runner. However, having promissed to stay at the head of the BQ until the next election, he's in a gregarious position. Reminds me of Yallop's hiring :P.

Edit: Remember that Duceppe picture in the sanitary "shower cap"? Well, German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder striked a similar pose last week [:o)].
