St.John's Senior Soccer

Recommended Posts

Attended the first coaches/managers meeting for the leagues on Saturday, it now appears that not only will King George V be upgraded (6500 seats new larger surface tv towers etc) but that it will possibly still be grass. If it does remain a natural surface that means we will have a new park with turf, lights seating etc in the city by September. Having a field turf pitch here in St.John's will be huge for extending our season and with two top notch fields we should be able to attract more high profile events. That said they may still decide to put turf on KGV which would eliminate the other field but one can hope. As well they are finally instituting cup play which will allow second division teams such as ours a shot at the big boys. Looks like things might just be shaping up here on the rock.

So are the 6,500 permanent seats and feild expansion a sure thing at KGV now? And if so when is it going to be completed?

I know that the greatest soccer battle ever fought on Canadian soil occurred at King George V field on September 14, 1985. However, there was also an earlier World Cup qualifying match played at St. John's on August 20, 1972. Canada defeated the United States 3-2 that day, but I'm not sure if it was played at KGV. Does anyone remember where it was played? Attendance figures for both these matches were apparently well over capacity as they are quote at 7,500 and 7,600 respectively. With an upgrade and an increased capacity, one would think that KGV would be considered for hosting more World Cup qualifying matches in the future. After all, how many other venues in Canada can boast only victories and sell-outs at every World Cup qualifying match since 1972?

Thanks, Robert.
