CPSL Week 16

Recommended Posts

Details of the Friday August 27th, 2004 CPSL game between Toronto Croatia and St Catharines Roma Wolves played at Memorial Park in Streetsville at 8:00pm.

89 min...Toronto Croatia Velemir Crljan GOAL...Crljan dekes up middle avoiding Wolves Lucio Ianiero sliding tackle and fakes left then right, holding onto ball then gets in left footed shot from 20 yards that's into top right corner of net beyond flying goalie Mihaly Bekesi.

Final Score:...........Toronto Croatia...........1............St Catharines Roma Wolves...........0...........

Attendance was about 100 on this extremely hot and humid evening played on a wet field. It would have been tough being a player tonight in weather like that but the players had to tough it out as both teams had only three of four subs.

Crljan's goal was a gem with him holding onto the ball rather than passing off. It was a rare move as the whole evening players were passing off to other players or having their shots blocked by sliding defenders or blasting the ball well off target. Goaltender George Azcurra earned the shutout for Toronto Croatia but neither he nor Wolves goalie Mike Bekesi had too many difficult saves because of the work of their defenders. Halburto Harris, Antonio Zupan, Shannon Mashado and Joseph Cosentino were the backline for Toronto Croatia and Joe Carbonara, Danny Gallagher and Ryan Foss were the Wolves backline.

Wolves' closest chance was when Ian Sinclair crossed through the TC box at the 83 minute mark and a player blasted a 12 yarder off the left goalpost, then Carlo Arghittu had a 7 yard shot with a fallen goalie but put the ball over the net. "Just like our whole season" was said from the bench for this team with only two wins in the 2004 season.

Play was rough with referee Angelo Gertsakis keeping a lid on the game. The small field at Memorial Park makes every game close contact. This night brought out even more mosquitoes than usual but there were a few cans of insect repellent to keep the bugs at bay.

Result of the Sunday August 29th, 2004 CPSL game between Brampton Hitmen and London City played at Victoria Park in Brampton at 7:30pm.

The game was called off because of the wet field. The goalmouths were a mass of mud.

So that's a round trip drive of two hours lost time for me but worse for the visiting team who came in a bus from London.

We can't really start a debate on natural grass vs field turf as a Cup game between Vaughan Shooters vs GS United back on July 4th was called off because of the wet field at the field turf covered Ontario Soccer Centre and that was because an afternoon rain hadn't had enought time to drain.

quote:I though one of the first things canadian soccer was going to do first was get rid of the ethnic team names, Toronto Croatia, St Cathrines Roma, those teams will appeal to a certain ethnic group they will not get the regular football supporter out

Well obviously you haven't "though" enough as Croatia and Roma are some of the best supported teams in the league.
