"It is time that we started to get serious. The irony is that we have stadium that was purposely built for national TV coverage of World Junior Games back in the eighties and it has been seriously under used since. Now, quite simply we want it to be converted to include soccer and we will do whatever it takes to get this project going."

Sudbury Canadians General Manager, Rino Boschetto

While the Sudbury Canadians will be using the Laurentian University soccer field which has one of the best pitches in the province, the Canadians want senior government to pay for the conversion of an existing stadium also at Laurentian.

The Sudbury Canadians entry in the USL has presented a number of significant opportunities of national and international exposure for the City of Greater Sudbury.

This year Ottawa will be the host site of the W-League final four playoffs. This means that the North American broadcast will emanate from Ottawa. In addition, the Canadian Soccer Association has granted Ottawa and Montreal the Women's U-19 CONCACAF Women's Championship.

Sudbury is now a part of a family of elite soccer within the continent. These opportunities will become more available to this community. Ironically, Sudbury has a stadium and one that can handle national TV coverage and eight to twelve thousand spectators but this stadium is slowly going to waste because of limited use.

The Laurentian Stadium Project

There is a great opportunity for the City to generate funds from this facility and promote the City of Sudbury. The infrastructure is in place but a conversion is needed.

The Sudbury Canadians would like the City of Sudbury, Laurentian University, the Ministry Of Northern Development and Mines, the Federal Government to work on a joint project to restore the facility and maximise its use to benefit the people of the City of Sudbury.

In addition to track and field events, the Stadium can generate funds from W League and University Varsity Soccer as well as other soccer events.

The Sudbury Canadians hope to kick start the conversion project by proposing to host the first USL Canada Cup game to be broadcast on national television. The Sudbury Canadians have begun work on securing national sponsorship to fully fund the annual event.

The Canadians really seem to have a great base. If they get the stadium fixed up that would be great for Sudbury but I wish there was no track as it takes some much out of the game been so far away from the field. But it would be great if they could pull of the cup and get the TV deal plus good support from sponsorship. SUDCAN if your there when’s the site going to be up? Also what are the chances of the Canada Cup to actually happen? Could the Canadians be one of the best this that happens for Canadian women’s. I guess well just have to see if they can pull this off.

As you can see these projects are linked – as much as we would like to bring exposure to the other W League teams with a Canada Cup – our agenda to a major degree is the stadium.

albeit if you read the latest edition of Inside Soccer – Greg’s article on pro soccer – I think that we can all agree ( and knew) that media coverage is critical hence staging a Canada Cup would be good move for all of the Canadian W League teams and great start for Sudbury

Can we pull it off ? - we know it is not going to be easy but our focus is government – that is one of the advantages of being from the North and there are only a few!

Our web-site should be out in a day or so – I want to thank Elaine for her great support – sorry about the logo similarity – but we really like it – we wish we had more action shots of the players – I am sure we will have the opportunity this summer.

the stadium currently has track events inside the track oval - we want them moved - there is a lot of property near by so space is not the issue - conversion time is not the issue - getting the key players lined up - is!

once we have our first formal meeting, we might be able to better speculate on timing

thank you for your interest
