Now Duff says he wants to go to United.

DUFF HOPING FOR UNITED ESCAPE ROUTE

By Alan Nixon

DAMIEN DUFF is stalling on a £17million move to Chelsea because he is hoping Manchester United come in with a last-minute bid to take him.

Blackburn's bewildered winger met with Chelsea officials at Stamford Bridge yesterday to talk about a double-your-money deal with Roman Abramovich's super-rich club.

However, Duff has told friends that he is going to hold off from signing for as long as he can because he thinks United boss Sir Alex Ferguson could also mount a move for him at the same price.

It seems unlikely as United are chasing other targets such as Ronaldinho and Kleberson - but Duff is not convinced that he fancies London.

Duff is settled in Lancashire and likes the quiet life. He has told Rovers team-mates of his concerns and word has reached Old Trafford that he could still be pinched.

Chelsea will give Duff some time to think over the move and it will not be down to simply hitting him with more and more money. Duff would even join United for less.

Duff has claimed the £17million fee is "a ridiculous price on my head".

"It is a stupid price with the way the game has gone," he said. "But at the end of the day, it is all about money with football directors." Abramovich has turned down the chance to sign Dutch World Cup star Edgar Davids because Juventus demanded they take Marcelo Salas as well.

Juventus president Luciano Moggi is so desperate to off-load injury-plagued Chilean striker Salas that he was prepared to sacrifice Davids in an £18million joint deal. Instead, Salas now looks set to join Argentine club side River Plate.

Agent Pini Zahavi insisted Chelsea were only interested in a straight cash deal for Davids.
