Final Score:....North York Astros...0.....Mississauga Olympians.....3...

Attendance was about 60 on this hot summer evening.

Dino Perri earned the shutout for the Olympians with some good catches and punch outs and a goalpost or two.

Olympians manager David Gee says their practises are held at the Soccer Centre in Vaughan, sometimes indoors and sometimes outdoors depending on the weather.

Danny Sanna returns to the Olympians after a year playing for Ottawa Wizards. It was Olympians first win of the year but goes with one loss and one tie so the team could soon move up the standings.

Astros late season star Guillermo Compton Hall is still recovering from an injury but came in as a substitute at 51 minutes and left at 79 minutes with the game out of hand. Hilight of his evening was when he cleared a ball crossfield and it soared over the

fence of the stadium and onto the roof of the high school next door!

Well maybe it's a good thing I couldn't make it to this game. [B)] Still not as bad as the 8-0 or 9-0 or whatever the heck it was from last season.

Here's what the CPSL site had to say:

OLYMPIANS BLANK ASTROS 3-0

Mississauga Olympians went to Esther Shiner Stadium in North York on Monday with still vivid memories of a 3-0 loss in the hands on North York Astros in Wild Card playoff action last October 18 and this loss came while being reminded of a 2-1 league loss to the Astros six weeks earlier.

But things were different this time around and the Olympians blanked North York 3-0 for their first win of the new season.

Following an opening 25 minutes during which North York showed signs of keeping up the promise shown recently while winning 2-0 win over Durham Flames on the Oshawa-based team’s home ground and the same score to win at London City’s ground on June 13, it was the Olympians who went ahead on a well taken goal by John Matas.

Danny Sanna made it 2-0 just after the interval and at 57 minutes striker Darren Tilley, last year’s leading scorer and Rookie of the Year in the CPSL, made it 3-0.

Astros stay tied for first place with Hamilton Thunder at the top of the Western Conference with a 2-2-1 record for 7 points, while Mississauga Olympians improve to 1-1-1 for 4 points.

Okay, since Sigma hasn't posted it, here's the remainder of the Week 6 schedule:

Thursday, June 26

Hamilton vs. North York

And that's it! (Brampton vs. Mississauga was originally scheduled for Sunday, but that has been postponed.) The reason for the thin schedule is because this coming weekend is the second weekend of the CPSL Open Cup. Schedules, results and general discussion are in the CPSL Open Cup thread.

June 26 result

Hamilton 2 North York 2

From the CPSL site:

ASTROS FIGHT BACK TO EARN 2-2 TIE WITH HAMILTON THUNDER IN ONLY GAME THURSDAY

North York Astros fought back after being down 2-0 to earn a 2-2 with Hamilton Thunder in a hard fought contest between two clubs at the top of the CPSL’s Western Conference in the only game played on Thursday.

Thunder, playing on their home turf at Brian Timmis Stadium in Hamilton, went ahead after 15 minutes on a goal by Kevin De Serpa and jumped into a 2-0 lead five minutes later on a goal by Stalin Cardenas.

Thunder pressed for a third goal as the first half progressed, but North York scored five minutes from the interval on a well taken strike by Fernando Flores. Peter Zorbas scored the equalizer at the 60-minute mark and held on to the 2-2 tie to the final whistle. Hamilton Thunder (2-0-2 WLT) and the Astros (2-2-2) are tied for top spot in the Western Conference at 8 points apiece.

They had coverage of Hamilton vs. North York on Sportsnet! Okay, not exactly... What they had was coverage of the ceremonial opening kickoff, which was taken by Ben Johnson, on Sportscentral. They mentioned that it was a Hamilton Thunder game but never mentioned the league or anything else about the actual game, and the only players that were visible were a couple of North York players. Not exactly the publicity that the Thunder were probably looking for by getting Johnson in the first place. Bleh.

Oh my, now they are interviewing some wrestling guy who has written a cookbook, live in the studio during Sportscentral. Meanwhile they gave all of 5 seconds to Marc-Vivien Foé. Oh the horror, the horror. [xx(] [V]

Results from the CPSL game played between Hamilton Thunder and North York Astros at Brian Timmis Stadium on 26-June-03 (20:30 start)

15 min...GOAL...HT Kevin DeSerpa

20 min...GOAL...HT Stalin Cardenas

40 min...GOAL...NY Fernando Flores

60 min...GOAL...NY Peter Zorbas

Final Score: Hamilton Thunder 2 North York Astros 2

Highlights:

The game started under threatening skies and the weather would be patchy throughout. Hamilton had most of the play early on, with long balls through to HT DeSerpa, who eventually capitalised on an excellent run. This quick goal shook the Astros, who started to commit numerous fouls. In the 20th minute, HT Cardenas lined up for a free kick from well outside the 18 yard box. His drive curled around the wall and past a surprised Astros keeper. Tremendous goal! As the half drew to a close, the Astros upped the pace. A nice move through the midfield saw NYA Flores receive the ball and slot it past the HT keeper and into the back of the net. The second half started much like the first, with a little more chippy play. Both teams pushed but could not capitalise. Off a botched corner kick, NYA Zorbas drilled home a thundering shot from inside the 18. The final moments of the game were tense with both teams pushing forward but neither could get that winning goal.

Players to watch: HT Denny Velastegui, NYA Peter Zorbas, NYA keeper, HT Stalin Cardenas

Players to avoid: HT David Simpson, NYA coach

Commentary:

Another very interesting Thunder home game. The crowd was fairly large even with the bad weather forecast. The pace of the game was brilliant with many attacks and quick counter attacks from both sides. Hamilton relied a lot early on the long ball and trying to get DeSerpa the ball. However, this exposed Hamilton's midfield and let the Astros take some of the midfield control, especially in the second half. As the game progressed the Astros had many quality chances only to be let down by their finishing. The crowd was also nicely vocal, partly due to the weather and partly because the game was actually fun. With time winding down, the Thunder threw everything at the Astros but could not find the winning goal. All in all, a well fought draw. Also, the ref kept the pace of the game up and tried to let play continue whenever possible.

Cheers,

Lazyboy.

Who names their kid Stalin? :)

Actually, it's a great idea. I think I'll name my first born Hitler Gauthier. No, no, not Hitler. How about Gaddafi Gauthier. It has a nice ring to it: Gaddafi Gauthier. Maybe he could play for Peruggia?
