SARS … More disappointment for the Hamilton Thunder Soccer Club.

The Hamilton Thunder Professional Soccer Team announced this morning in Hamilton that the Hajduk Split, Croatian 1st Division Soccer Club has cancelled their exhibition game scheduled for early July in Hamilton due to fears over SARS. This is the second cancellation of a major soccer event for this local soccer club in the last week as a result fears generated by the SARS outbreak in Toronto.

Italo Ferrari, owner of the Hamilton Thunder Soccer Team is optimistic. “Losing a second major fundraiser like this will cause us hardship but I am optimistic that Hamilton wants and will support it’s professional soccer team and the best way they can do that is to come out to Brian Timmis Stadium and fill those stands.”

Duncan Wilde, Head Coach of the Hamilton Thunder Soccer Team is concerned about the effect the recent withdrawal will have on the players. “We’re just in the process of building momentum and this cancellation comes as another blow. The team looks forward to the opportunity to play international teams like Hajduk Split. It is great experience for our players, builds moral and helps to solidify the players as a team.” The Hamilton Thunder is currently sitting in first place after a 4-1 win over the Durham Flames at the Civic Stadium in Oshawa on Saturday.

The Hamilton Thunder Professional Soccer Club is hopeful that plans to host W Connections, 1st Division Trinidad Soccer Team as part of the Caribana Festivities will still go ahead as scheduled. The next regular season game is Thursday June 12, 8:30 pm at Brian Timmis Stadium.
