U-17s begin CFU qualifiers tomorrow

T&T Express

Trinidad and Tobago's national Under-17 footballers will begin their quest for a place in the 2011 FIFA Under- 17 Men's World Cup in Mexico with a Caribbean Football Union qualifying match against St Kitts/Nevis from 11am tomorrow at the Marvin Lee Stadium.

T&T will play the second game of a double-header, with Cuba and Bermuda meeting in the opener from 9am at the Macoya venue.

Following an early morning training session at the Marvin Lee Stadium, the T&T team moved into a live-in camp at the Crowne Plaza yesterday.

Former national goalkeeper Ross Russell, who was also part of the coaching staff of the T&T U-17 team that participated at the 2007 FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Korea, will be in charge of the team for tomorrow's encounter as head coach Shawn Cooper is currently attending a coaching course being hosted by the Netherland's Football Association in Holland.

He and Hutson Charles are the two T&T coaches at the course.

Russell said the team will play for nothing less than a victory as only the top team from the group will advance to the Concacaf final round scheduled for next year.

"We have to try and win all our matches and we will take nothing for granted against St Kitts," Russell told TTFF Media following yesterday's session.

"Generally the team is a well composed one despite the fact that none of the players have played at this competitive level before. But overall we are solid in the midfield and attack. Defensively we have been working extra time to ensure we are solid enough in that aspect of our game," Russell added.

The current team has been in training since January under Cooper and according to Russell, the competition for places went right down to the wire. The final team also includes two overseas based players in Isaiah Noriega from professional outfit Houston Dynamo and Tanner Ferriera- from Toronto FC.

The Under-17s have played unbeaten against some Super League and Reserve League teams, including Joe Public, Defence Force and United Petrotrin.

The final squad will be announced to the media on Tuesday.

??? He's not listed on either Academy Roster:

If he's playing U17 he's likely born in 1994 or later so would be with the Juniors. The Junior roster was recently added so pretty sure it's up to date...perhaps he was #31 and was removed from the program when he chose to represent T&T?

edit: He's not with TFC, he's with North York Astros Reserve team:
