PLAYOFF BID STRENGTHENED

Italia victory over Supra

A goal at the 85th minute by forward Jason De Thomasis was enough to give Italia Shooters a 1-0 victory over Toronto Supra Portuguese and the three points needed to strengthen the Vaughan team’s bid for a playoff spot following a well-played CSL encounter at The Soccer Centre Tuesday.

De Thomasis took a pass on his body to strike from 20 yards clear of Supra Portuguese goalkeeper Mike Silva at a time when most considered the game was heading for a scoreless tie.

Silva had earlier saved a penalty kick taken by Italia forward Sean Myers 12 minutes after the interval.

Supra Portuguese lost Uarlem Castro who was ordered off at 93 minutes for a second yellow card.

The Italia victory improves the team’s record to 7-5-5 WLT for 26 points, 11 points in front of fourth-place Supra Portuguese in the International Division. The Toronto west-end team has a 3-5-6 record for 11 points.

Attendance inside the field was about 40 with a crowd outside on a mound overlooking the fence of about 15. This game had been rescheduled from Sunday August 6th because Italia Shooters were still involved in the Open Canada Cup at that time and had a quarterfinal match the next night. This is actually the home ground of the Italia Shooters using their staff to run the scoreboard and set up the PA system.

Camilo Benzi earned the shutout for the Shooters. His first big test was when he ran out of the box to head away a ball from TSP Michael Deluca. At 12 minutes IS Desi Humphreyƒ0à0 run on the left had him send a 35 yard cross that IS Sean Myers charge for and his 12 yard header from the right was wide right of the post. At 18 minutes, IS came a bit closer when a player crossed from the right and IS Kurt Mella connected on a 10 yard header that hit the left goalpost low and was then cleared. At 47 minutes, TSP goalie Michael Silva was able to palm the ball over the players in the box when IS Josue Jaramillo sent in a dangerous cross. At 59 minutes, Jason DeThomasis rolled a perfect cross through the six yard box after rounding the goalie on the right but no IS player was following through for an easy tap-in. At 71 minutes, IS Raj Takhar crossed from the right, IS Jason DeThomasis had a 20 yard shot blocked by a defender and IS Aundre Rollins got away a bicycle kick from 18 yards that the goalie knocked wide. At 76 minutes, Myers was fed a ball up the middle and his low 12 yard shot from the right was deflected wide right by the sliding goalie. At 78 minutes DeThomasisƒ0à0 30 yard freekick down the middle dipped low and the diving goalie blocked on the right post.

Shooter players were screaming for the game to end when four minutes of injury time had gone by but another two minutes was added because of the extra delays and injuries. The IS goalie was injured at 89 minutes leaping for a ball on the edge of the box and was knocked by a TSP player trying to make a play. The goalie was able to hang on and kick the ball out of bounds before collapsing. IS Desi Humphrey earned a Yellow card for not waiting for the referee to blow his whistle before taking a freekick in the TSP zone. Then Castroƒ0à0 Yellow/Red cards at 93 minutes. IS players had the best chance to score in the last minute but a defender was able to block a shot about three yards out with the goalie out of position. The four minutes of injury was necessary when surprisingly the referee pulled up lame at 61 minutes but was able to carry on after being treated.

The game was pretty even with both teams mostly getting only long range shots throughout most of the game or having them blocked by the tight defences. Kurt Mella was a starter for Italia Shooters and his brother Adolfo Mella started for Supra. Over the years Iƒ0à4e watched them play as both opponents and team-mates.
