Cooks Posted June 5, 2006 Share Posted June 5, 2006 Alberta Major Soccer League - Saturday results: Calgary Callies 1 -1 Edmonton Green & Gold A 25th minute header by Damir Jesic, off of a perfectly placed free kick, gave Green & Gold the lead. Callies answered back in the 61st with a cannon from the top of the box by Steffen Holdt. In the end, the two clubs were quite evenly matched (perhaps with the Callies holding a slight edge). Callies held much of the possesion in the early going and Dutchie's goal was against the run of play. Green & Gold picked things up after their tally and the match was a see-saw battle after it. The Callies were suffering from some poor finishing and lacked that crucial touch when they approached the 18-yard box. It could have been a much higher scoring match than it ended up being. Calgary Villains 3 - 1 Edmonton Ital-Canadians Villains looked to be having an easy time of it until Paul Hamilton and Ilya left part way through the second half. Justin Farenik moved from left back to center-half to replace Hamilton and Billy Abbey came in at left back. Abbey did a good job there, although Justin Ungaro put little pressure on him down Itals' right wing. However, Itals did generate several chances down the left side, with Freddie Akok skinning the Villains right back several times, only to have his shots saved or drift wide or over the bar. Ilya had been tormenting the Itals right back until he left. He was replaced by Middleton, who was largely ineffective and looked a step off the pace. As a result, Villains started to attack more often down the right wing, with Fleming looking dangerous. All in all, a fair result. Villains looked solid in midfield and on the wings, while Itals looked young and somewhat naive at the back.
