British Columbia reigns at 2005 Big Kahuna/Adidas CCAA Soccer Nationals

(Cornwall, ON – November 16th, 2005) British Columbia’s Langara College Women’s team capture their first gold medal since 1991 at the 2005 Big Kahuna/Adidas CCAA National Soccer Championships, while Douglas College (BC) secure their first-ever Championship title on the Men’s side.

On the women’s side, ranked 5th in the CCAA, host team and Langara Falcons began their reign to the top with a 2-0 win over Grant MacEwan College (AB) on their first day of competition. Langara then defeated the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics (NS) (4-0) and moved into the gold medal game against three-time reigning champions, the François-Xavier-Garneau Élans (QC). Following a tough battle and outstanding play, the Élans succumbed to Langara’s strength and speed to finish the game 0-1 and capture the silver medal. With a score of 2-1, the Grant MacEwan Griffins secured a third place win against the Fanshawe College Falcons in the bronze medal game. Thompson Rivers University and Mount Saint Vincent University finished 5th and 6th respectively.

On the men’s side, lead by 2005 CCAA Men’s Soccer All Canadian Cameron Wilson, the Douglas College Royals battled it out against the Algonquin College Thunder (ON) in the gold medal round. The Thunder could not overcome Douglas’ speed and agility and the Royals prevailed to finish in first place (2-0). The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT - AB) Ooks defeated the Champlain Regional College – St. Lambert Cavaliers (QC) with a score of 1-0, securing third place and capturing the bronze medal. Host team Langara Falcons finished 5th overall, while the University of New Brunswick-Saint John Seawolves finished 6th.

“I am extremely pleased that the 2005 Big Kahuna/Adidas CCAA National Soccer Championships were such a success! Despite the challenging weather conditions, we were certainly treated to high calibre soccer each day and a commendable level of sportsmanship displayed by all teams,” expressed Clayton Munro, Tournament Chair. “Having an amazing Title Sponsor such as Big Kahuna / Adidas on board for these Championships was, without question, a key ingredient to the success of this event - we truly enjoyed working with them to ensure that all athletes and coaches had an unforgettable experience. I am also very proud of the Organizing Committee and the numerous volunteers, who so selflessly put in much time and effort leading up to and during these Championships,” concluded Clayton.
