Final Score:....Toronto Croatia..........1..............Windsor Border Stars.............2...........

Attendance was about 225 on this very hot, humid evening.

Border Stars had no bench except for coach Scott Patriquin. At the 20 minute mark disaster struck when forward Radek Papiez is injured on a tackle when TC Antonijo Zupan slides in to get the ball on the sideline and Papiez flies over him. The team elected to play the rest of the first half shorthanded. In the second half Papiez returned to the game but was limping badly although he did complete the rest of the game. He couldn't run fast enough to get to the through balls.

After the game I asked defender JJ Dowhan why the team was so short staffed. Some couldn't get away from work, some were committed to Ontario Cup games and some had personal appointments. He said this should be the low point of their season as they'll have more guys after this weekend. Let's hope so!

The Border Stars were able to hang on and not let the home team get a lot of shots in alone. Goalie Sean Murphy played aggressively with a lot of charging out to the edge of his box to make clearances or pull in the ball. Toronto Croatia had some trick plays arranged for free kicks and corner kicks but they always were always short on the final shot putting them wide or having a defender break them up.

TC Tom Granic had a great chance to score in injury time after a corner kick from the right found him alone on the left and his 5 yard shot is blocked by a defender standing inside the post. Some consolation for him was his father won a lucky draw at halftime for an airline ticket to Croatia.

Toronto Croatia has only scored one goal in their first two games and has one tie and one loss. Border Stars are now 2-0.

Referee Gord Arrowsmith kept the game under control but it was rough with lots of sliding tackles and hands and elbows in the face by both teams.
