Is the A-League on its last legs?

Whatever happens next could indicate the future of the A-League. Is there going to be an expansion or a further folding of clubs. The current trend can not be seen as favorable to prospective investors. Will the league stabalize at its present number and grow stronger. The numbers in the west are small, which based on the last schedule would imply playing more often against clubs closer to home. The chances of the Whitecaps going to a Caribbean Island once a year seem remote, let alone 2 or more visits. Of the Big-3, Vancouver seems most vulnerable as their regional competition has suffered greatly with the losses of Calgary and Edmonton.

The A-league is just one league is a system of leagues. The USL. having 12 teams isn't a bad thing. Teams will get stronger on feild products as the best players will continue to work and those on the bubble will be out of work.

The USL has a growing PDL league. This type of franchise seems to be what people want. The only problem is that the players don't get paid. So it's basically a NCAA summer league. But it does allow soccer to be played in places where an A-league team would die a quick death.

Some PDL teams outdrew Calgary and Edmonton. Thunder Bay has a great PDL club. And Ottawa will have one as well. I hate to say this but the PDL model is what we in Canada- should be following if you want a semi-pro type league.

I wonder if the Calgary A-league team this year would have beaten the Calgary PDL team of a few years ago?
