Hatters crisis deepens

John Gurney: Promised pay "tomorrow"

Still no pay as June deadline passes

THE Luton Town crisis deepened today when players and staff reached managing director John Gurney's promised payday deadline – but still did not receive their wages.

As workers made their way home this evening they were still no closer to finding out when or if they will receive their cash.

It is now five days past the club's usual pay day of the 26th of the month and it is understood staff are working under an increasingly strained atmosphere.

The club will not officially comment on the dilemna, but a Hatters insider told Luton Today that staff are growing increasingly disillusioned with Gurney.

It is believed Gurney met concerned workers this afternoon at the request of the staff and that the managing director promised cheques would be issued "tomorrow".

But the Luton source said that employees have now served letters to Gurney advising him that he has broken terms of their contracts.

The source said: "Everyone's quite appalled at the way they've been treated. Everyone works very hard for the club and to be treated like this is unacceptable."

At the advice of the PFA, the Hatters' remaining 18 first team players reported in for training this morning and met new boss Mike Newell for the first time.

Training was delayed while the players were briefed on the latest situation at the club.

Newell said after the first session: "Obviously the players are a bit concerned at the moment. Everyone at the club is."

Gurney was unavailable for comment.

Oldham is in an equally grave state, in the end it is better that Corazzin got out of there. At least with Caps he'll have some fun.

Don't know about that. The Southsiders are looking for Fonseca's head after the recent run of poor results.

I can say that the scenery at Swangard beats Luton Town's grounds.
