Moscato Signs With Whitecaps

VANCOUVER (Tuesday, June 17, 2003) - It was announced today that the Whitecaps F.C. Women's Team has signed Canadian international midfielder Carmelina Moscato of Mississauga, Ontario. This brings to nine the number of current Canadian National Team players on the Whitecaps 2003 roster.

The 19-year-old Moscato has made 14 appearances for the National Team, her first coming in a 0-0 tie with Australia on April 3, 2002, in a tournament in France. She has scored one goal for Canada, that coming in a 7-1 win over Greece at the 2003 Algarve Cup. Her most recent appearance was in Canada's 4-0 win over England on May 19.

A former standout with Canada's famed U-19 team, Moscato was one of four Canadians named to the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship All Star squad, along with goalkeeper Erin McLeod, defender Candace Chapman, and striker Christine Sinclair. The Whitecaps now have seven members of that Canadian U-19 squad on their 2003 roster. Moscato played in all six of Canada's games at the U-19 Championships, and has a total of 20 caps and 4 goals at the U-19 level.

Moscato will be with the Whitecaps for their upcoming road trip in which they play four games in six days. Vancouver plays each of the three Colorado teams, starting with the Denver Lady Cougars on June 21, before heading to Phoenix to face the Arizona Heatwave on June 26. Vancouver's next home game is Sunday, June 29 against the Seattle Sounders.

Last season, Moscato played for the W-League's Ottawa Fury. She was expected to play this year with the Toronto Inferno, but opted to come to Vancouver to join her many team-mates from the national team.

Moscato recently completed her freshman year at Penn State University of the NCAA Division One, playing 20 games and scoring one assist. Penn State captured its fifth consecutive Big Ten regular season title, and advanced all the way to the College Cup semi-finals, where they lost 2-0 to the eventual champions University of Portland, led by Christine Sinclair.

Carmelina Moscato (5'8"; 173 cm) was born May 2, 1984 in Mississauga, Ontario, where she attended St. Francis Xavier Secondary.

DEFENDER GILLIAN HICKS RELEASED

In order to remain within the 26-player roster limit, the Whitecaps have released injured defender Gillian Hicks. A three-year veteran of the team with 26 career appearances, Hicks suffered an ACL injury in training two weeks ago, and will undergo knee surgery next week. This is a recurrence of the injury that she suffered at the end of last season from which she only recently recovered. Hicks had played every minute of Vancouver's first three games this year, until the injury.

Wow, they're like the Real Madrid of (Canadian) Women's soccer. :-)
