Whitecaps' all-time assist leader returns for fifth season

VANCOUVER (Thursday, June 5, 2003) - The Whitecaps F.C. Men's Team announced today the signing of midfielder John Sulentic of Richmond, BC. The 23-year-old is one of the highest scoring midfielders in club history, and is Vancouver's all-time assist leader with 27.

Sulentic could be in the line-up as early as this Saturday, when the Whitecaps visit the Seattle Sounders. The game is part of a doubleheader at Seahawks Stadium, with the Whitecaps and Sounders women's teams kicking off at 4:00pm, followed by the men at 7:00pm. The Whitecaps are hoping that Sulentic can help improve the team's offence, as Vancouver has failed to score in three straight games.

Sulentic played only 7 minutes for the Whitecaps last year, as he left the club early in the season for a series of tryouts in Croatia. He ranks 10th on the club's all-time scoring list with 71 points on 22 goals and 27 assists, tied with Steve Kindel, though Sulentic has played significantly fewer games, 67, than any other player in the top 10 (Kindel has the next fewest at 116).

Sulentic profile

A former member of both the Canadian U-23 and U-20 squads, Sulentic enjoyed a phenomenal rookie year in 1999 when he set the A-League record for most assists in a season with 19. He also finished 10th in league scoring that year, and was named Second Team All League. Sulentic finished 3rd in Vancouver scoring in each of his first two seasons. He was hampered in 2001 by a broken bone in his foot suffered during training camp, which prevented him from earning his first start until mid-August.

Sulentic's only appearance last season was in a 4-1 home loss to Seattle on May 26, in which he came on as a second-half substitute, but was red carded for a reckless tackle just 7 minutes later. He left for Croatia soon after, and was officially released from the Whitecaps roster on June 6, 2002, exactly one year less a day from today.

John Sulentic (5'10" 160 lb.; 177cm 73kg) was born in Vancouver on December 24, 1979, and was raised in Richmond, BC.
