Guest speedmonk42
I am curious, and I think we sort of had this talk before, about soccer/WC and HD. Does the wider aspect ratio/more info give you a wider view of the field? I am curious how they make use of it. I have not seen an HD soccer signal yet. I can't imagine the WC not being shot in HD, but will we see it in HD here, in the widescreen 720P or 1080i sense...
Yob
According to this site you do see a more of the field in widescreen 16:9, it's then cropped to fit 4:3. http://www.hostbroadcastservices.com/faq.php#13 Q: I am a Viewer and I heard that the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ Germany will be broadcast in widescreen 16/9, but I only have a 4/3 TV set at home. Will I miss the action? A: No, you will not miss the action. The programming is originated in 16:9 but the TV Director ensures that action is concentrated within a 4:3 safe area. The difference with a widescreen TV set is that the widescreen viewer sees the main action- like you- with extra information / picture around, such as other players in the area. ESPN will be broadcasting all games in HD: ESPN, ABC SPORTS AND SOCCER UNITED MARKETING TO PRESENT ALL 64 MATCHES OF THE 2006 FIFA WORLD CUP IN HIGH DEFINITION WORLD CUP STUDIO SHOWS ALSO IN HD A HISTORIC FIRST IN U.S. COVERAGE OF THE PREMIER GLOBAL SPORTING EVEN http://media.espn.com/ESPNToday/index.jsp?content=2005/Aug_05/worldcup.htm
Guest speedmonk42
COOOOL I will be buying a new TV. I wonder how many TV's WC2006 will sell. I know I rented a giant TV for France 98, and was told by the guy that it's their biggest rental time is WC. I then bought a new TV for 2002. I will be buying a new TV again.
