Dan Antoniuk scores for Portland, after coming right of the bench in the 78th minute. 5-1.

Edmonton should just phone in the win instead of showing up in Portland. So far in just under 2 games they've allowed 11 goals. At least they don't have that Rick Titus upsetting the apple cart.

Match report with post game comments from Edmonton (Strobes site)are kind of amusing (nothing personal Strobe!):

Some quotes of note:

quote:After traveling all night and arriving in Portland at 3am Thursday morning,

the Edmonton Aviators took the field against the Western Conference

powerhouse Timbers.

Not to be too picky but since when does it take all night to travel from Seattle to Portland? Now to some quotes from coach Ongaro:

quote:"When you can't run anymore, you can't play anymore," said Aviators Head

Coach Ross Ongaro. "The guys put everything they had into it but they were

just too tired in the second half."

quote:This was just a case of us missing some

players due to injury and suspension and the players that we had not being

rested. We used all of our substitutions but couldn't keep up to Portland,"

said Ongaro. "The guys worked hard right up to the last second. They

showed a lot of character; it's unfortunate they were too tired to play in

the second half."

Interesting quotes. All teams play back to back games and most are tired during the second game. But thats hardly an excuse for giving up SIX GOALS. Ongaro might be interested to know that other teams sometimes actually find a way to win the second game in two nights.

IS there any scenario where Ongaro may be unhappy with his teams performance?

I don't know of any other league in the world that plays back-to-back games; it's ridiculous. I think the fans lose out. I guess it's a money-saving arrangement and I know some teams manage to win the second game. But it doesn't make sense to have a fully rested team play against a team that has played the night before. If the back-to-back games invole the same two teams then it's a fairer arrangement, but really the quality of the second game is likely less. I think there should be a minimum of one day between games.

Yes!!!! You are absolutely right. I've been raising this issue since last year. For this reason the league will have to add more teams in the Western Conference in order to avoid these constant back-to-back series which are putting major strain on the players and clubs. The league will have to encourage clubs such as Tacoma, Utah, Winnipeg, Victoria, San Diego, etc... from joining the league.
