DJT
From The Sudbury Star: Big home weekend for Canadians Local USL squad has two games on home pitch this weekend By Scott Mitchell/For The Sudbury Star Local Sports - Saturday, June 19, 2004 @ 11:00 The Sudbury Canadians get two cracks at getting their first win under their belt this weekend, with games at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday afternoon at Cambrian College’s field. The Canadians have been outscored 41-7 in its first six games, not surprisingly resulting in an 0-6 record. It doesn’t get any easier this weekend with the first-place Ottawa Fury coming to town today and the second place Rochester Ravens taking to the pitch Sunday. Ottawa beat up on the Canadians, 11-0 the last time they met in Ottawa, actually holding an 11-0 lead at the half. Canadians head coach Frank Malvaso is hoping the venue change will bring a change in the team’s fortunes. “Ottawa looks like they’re the best team in the USL, so we’ve really got our hands full,” Malvaso said. “We’re going to hope to improve on our last outing with them. Since they played us, they’ve blown everyone else out too, maybe not as bad though.” Resigned to the fact that it will be tough going against an Ottawa team that boasts six players on the national team, Malvaso thinks his squad matches up much better against Rochester, and he has made a few changes in order to make the Canadians more competitive. “We’re working on certain things and hopefully that helps us better focus on certain things that we need to improve on,” he said. Ball control key Controlling the ball and creating more offence are key for the Canadians this weekend. “We’re hoping that we kind of inch forward every time,” Malvaso said. “We know this isn’t something that we are going to do all in one game. “We just want to get better and improve on certain facets of our game each time. Playing Ottawa again will be a good test, though.” Ottawa has outscored its opponents 30-2 on its way to a 5-0 record. Rochester is not far behind with a record of 4-1, but has played much tighter games as referenced by their 13-10 goals for/goals against differential. Malvaso said despite the 0-6 record, his girls’ spirits are high. “They’re optimistic and they understand the challenge that they face,” he said. “I don’t think any of them will back down from a challenge. “The best way to get better is to get in there and get the experience. We know there is no other way to do it.” After playing its first two home games of the season at the less than spectacular Delki Dozzi Field, the team will play the rest of its games at the newly resodded Cambrian field. DJT
My apologies for not setting up this thread prior to the match... Final: Sudbury 0 Ottawa 7 From the Sudbury Canadians: Fury Continues To Dominate Opposition June 19, 2004 by sudcan The Ottawa Fury continues to rough shot over their opposition. After defeating the Boston Renegades 6-0 last weekend the Fury rolled in to Sudbury and defeated the Canadians 7-0 While the Fury appear unstoppable in their drive for the USL W League title, the Canadians made modest improvements from their last encounter which resulted in a 11-0 lashing. The Canadians again employed some of their younger players and found some improvements. Frank Malvaso Head Coach “We are moving forward and the experience of playing some of the best players in the nation has had a positive effect. We are starting to see some early evidence of this which makes us very optimistic. If you are going learn you might as well learn from the best and they don’t get much better than the Ottawa Fury"
