FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE VOYAGEURS CUP ENTERS HOME STRETCH TORONTO, August 3, 2003 - With the 2003 Voyageurs Cup past the halfway point, the Vancouver Whitecaps’ trip across Canada in the coming week marks the start of the do-or-die stage of the competition for both western teams, and could end with the clinching of the second annual championship for Canada’s top professional soccer team. Vancouver and the Calgary Storm have their second meeting of this year’s Voyageurs Cup in a holiday Monday match in Calgary. Later in the week, Vancouver travel east for matches against the Montreal Impact on Wednesday and the Toronto Lynx on Friday. Vancouver and Calgary kick off the week’s pivotal games at Foothills Park in Calgary on Monday, August 4 at 8:30 PM Mountain. Vancouver’s visit to Claude Robillard Sports Complex in Montreal on Wednesday, August 6 begins at 7:30 PM Eastern, and will be simulcast live in French on radio and Web by Montreal’s CKAC 730 AM (www.ckac.com). The week ends with Vancouver and Toronto meeting at Toronto’s Centennial Park Stadium on Friday, August 8 at 7 PM Eastern. Montreal and Toronto lead the Voyageurs Cup standings with nine points each, while Vancouver have three and Calgary have none, so the results of this week’s games are vital to the western teams’ chances of challenging for the trophy. The previous two Voyageurs Cup games, played July 16 and 24, served only to intensify the competition. Toronto battled to an exciting 3-2 overtime win in Montreal, with the 2003 tournament scoring leader Ali Ngon, who ironically has since been transferred to Montreal, converting the tying and winning goals. Nikola Vignjevic scored the other for Toronto, and Eduardo Sebrango and Sita-Taty Matondo tallied for Montreal. In the west, Vancouver earned their first points of this year’s tournament with a 2-0 victory at home to Calgary, with goals from Nico Craveiro and Oliver Heald. Both Montreal and Vancouver have an opportunity to clinch the Voyageurs Cup by the end of the week. Three straight wins for Vancouver in the coming week could seal the cup for them, while Montreal will be this year’s winner if they defeat Vancouver on Wednesday and Vancouver defeats Toronto on Friday. If the trophy is not won this week, Calgary will play a crucial role in determining the eventual winner as they visit Toronto and Montreal at the end of August for the last two matches of the 2003 Voyageurs Cup. ABOUT THE VOYAGEURS CUP The Voyageurs, Canada's national soccer fan club, inaugurated the Voyageurs Cup, Canada's only national, fan-awarded soccer trophy, in 2002. The Voyageurs Cup trophy is awarded annually to the most successful Canadian A-League team, based on matches with other Canadian A-League teams. The Voyageurs will present the Voyageurs Cup trophy to that team at a home game late in the season. The Cup will remain in possession of the winning team for display until the beginning of the following A-League season. The entire cost of the Voyageurs Cup, including purchasing, maintaining, engraving, shipping, and promoting the trophy and tournament, has been borne entirely by private donations from individual Voyageurs.
