DJT Posted July 31, 2003 Share Posted July 31, 2003 Wednesday, July 30 St. Catharines 3 North York 1 From the CPSL site: Roma Wolves forward Carlo Arghittu was outstanding in scoring a natural hat-trick to lead his team to a 3-1 win over North York Astros in the only game played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League on Wednesday night. Arghittu struck at 20, 49 and 86 minutes in a game well played but which flared up with less than 10 minutes remaining to result in a player from each team being ejected. Astros’striker Francisco Dos Santos put the ball past St. Catharines goalkeeper Claudio Perri for the only North York goal scored two minutes after the 1-0 interval. The win improves St. Catharines Roma Wolves to a 4-4-1 WLT record for 13 points and an elevation to third in the Western Conference standings, while North York Astros remain at 11 points from a 3-5-2 record. The match started out as a midfield battle with both teams clogging up the central area. Roma had the first few chances but the Astros keeper was up to the challenge. SC Arghittu scored his first off of a lazy cross that he quickly buried. 1-0 and the Roma fans were cheering. The rest of the first half was dominated by the Astros inability to stay onside. The Astros outside play was on pace but their strikers could not beat the linesman's flag. The second half got under way and the Astros quickly capitalised. NYA #13 gently floated a perfect pass across the box which NYA Dos Santos drove into the net off the far post. Excellent play and it looked like the Roma players were caught off guard. However, SC striker Arghittu quickly brought Roma back with a fine strike from just inside the box, setup by player/coach Ianneri. The second half then developed into a typical CPSL rough match with numerous flagrant fouls occuring. The ref was in control to that point but it quickly got out of hand. With about ten minutes to go, NY #11 and SC #19 both went for a ball on the near sideline. With the ball in touch, NY #11 got up with arms swinging. SC #19 called him on it and NY #11 head butted him with authorithy. The ref came over quickly and NY #11 was instantly ejected. A well deserved red. NY #11 was fairly rough throughout and the ref had warned him several times. On the same play, SC #19 received his second yellow and was also dismissed. A bit of a hasty decision but SC #19 was verbally taunting NY #11. With time winding down, the Astros were denied on a brilliant strike which had SC keeper C.Perri beat but could not avoid the upright. On the ensuing play, SC Arghittu netted the hat trick with some skilled moves in the box and driving a shot past the Astros keeper. Again, with time winding down, the Astros were denied another goal as a brilliant strike beat Perri but not the crossbar. It was also announced that GK Dino Perri had rejoined the Roma Wolves and he was on the bench as the reserve keeper. I didn't have a chance to talk with him so am still wondering about the move back to club Roma. Either way, this gives club Roma another excellent keeper and a great addition to the club both in experience and in coaching abilities. Cheers, Lazyboy. So far so good for Dos Santos, three goals (and an assist) in his first two games. BTW, for the record, NY #11 is Waheedu Monawar (he's apparently from Afghanistan) and NY #13 is Adam Young. DJT Posted August 3, 2003 Author Share Posted August 3, 2003 Thursday, July 31 Toronto Supra 2 Metro Lions 0 From the CPSL site: Toronto Supra continue their remarkable unbeaten streak of what is now 10 league and cup games with a 2-0 defeat of Metro Lions in a hard fought, tense encounter at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, the only game played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League on Thursday night. The other game scheduled, Hamilton Thunder vs. Toronto Croatia at Brian Timmis Stadium in Hamilton was postponed and is rescheduled for September 25. Samuel Afriyie opened the scoring for Supra at the 16th minute mark in what has been described as one of the most spectacular goals in the CPSL campaign. Afriyie collected the ball just inside the Lions’ half to make his way in a brilliant solo effort to beat Gregory Drakes in the Lions’ net. Metro Lions, a slumping team busy making changes to find a winning formula, fought for the equalizer during the reaminder of the first half and into the second half, but it was Supra which eventually scored when Danny Amaral found the net with 10 minutes remaining. Supra now have 6-0-2 WLT record for 20 points and with Ottawa Wizards the only two teams without a loss this season. Supra trail Wizards by five points in the Eastern Conference, but the west end Toronto team has a game in hand. Metro Lions continue to struggle with a 1-5-2 record for five points. The Supra have really turned it around this year. Many people expected this kind of run last season, but they flopped to last place.
