Luis_Rancagua asked me at BigSoccer.com, where I occationally post, if I could post news about canadian players in Sweden here. I'll be glad to. Before this weekends news some general information about the swedish league and our canadians:

You can find a simple introduction to the swedish league system in english at the swedish FA's site: http://www.svenskfotboll.se/t2e.asp?p=20404. Although the swedish national team usually is ranked a top ten european team, the league is more like top twenty in europe. This is not top flight european football. Very few players in the domestic league make it to the national team. But the league is a good stepping stone for those with ambition (and ability) to play the major leagues, mainly the dutch, german and british leagues.

As far as i know there are today five canadians in the two top divisions. In Allsvenskan (The All-Swedish, the premier division) you'll find:

In Örebro SK:

Chris Pozniak, on his second season for the club, has a steady spot in the starting XI. Important to the teams tactics of relying on heavy defense when playing the major teams.

Nic Bukalic is doing good in the reserves, scoring a lot, but has yet to qualify for a starting spot. Has played 5 games as a sub, usually the last part of the second half.

Örebro is currently 6 in the league, may advance a step or two, but will not qualify for international cup play.

In Enköpings SK:

Kenny Stamatopoulos at the team since July 1 2003. Has only played two matches, but has impressed and is surely part of the teams turn to the better the last matches. 4 out of the teams 9 points is from the last two matches. But Enköping is still one of the major candidates for relegation.

In Östers IF:

Atiba Hutchinsson is a major asset to his team. Steady spot in the starting XI, the teams best scorer with 3 goals so far. Having a defensive midfielder as the major scorer is by the way significant to the teams problems. The team is likely to be relegated.

In Superettan (The Super-One, second division)

In Västerås SK:

Adam Braz, steady starter for one of the division's best teams. Promotion possibilities, but they need to do better than they have done the last few matches.

This weekend's news:

Not much, really. Pozniak and Hutchinsson playing Gold Cup, Adam Braz out injured (but nothing serious, probably back next game July 20). Nic Bukalic made one of his appearences as late sub (15 minutes) in the 0-0 game against Landskrona. Kenny Stamatopoulos played 90 reliable minutes in the 0-0 relagation zone match against Sundsvall.

Even if Allsvenskan games are pay-per-view, you can always catch a couple of minutes summary at the national network, which are published on the internet at http://svt.se/fotboll. This weekend's matches at http://svt.se/content/1/c6/10/06/00/030713_osk_bois_hi.ram for Örebro (no Budalic in sight, though) and http://svt.se/content/1/c6/10/06/02/030713_gif_esk_hi.ram for Enköping (a couple of Stamatopoulos saves).

Dandal,

From your perspective, do you think that Nik Budalic will have his contract renew eventually by Örebro??? It appears that Örebro signed Budalic until the end of September/2003. In fact, his contract with Örebro was only for 6-months.

Budalic was signed to replace Örebro's Kenyan striker Boniventure Maruti, who had major leg surgery early this year. Maruti is now in rehab and improving nicely, but it's hard to predict when he's fit to play. But Budalic hasn't really managed to fill Maruti's booths, so my guess is his contract will not be renewed, regardless Maruti's condition.

But what do I know...
