JOHANNESBURG, May 29 (Reuters) - Two of Malawi's players based in Canada have been withdrawn from the squad because of a scare over the spread of the SARS virus, the BBC reported on Thursday.

Peter Mponda and fellow midfielder MacDonald Yobe have not been allowed to travel to Blantyre to join the side ahead of their African Nations Cup group one qualifier against Nigeria in Lagos on June 7.

Malawi's government have imposed a ban on travellers from countries affected by the pneumonia-like SARS virus.

Mponda and Yobe play for Ottawa Wizards in the Canadian league, which began at the weekend.

"Mponda and Yobe are key players for us but we have to follow the orders given by the government," said Malawi Football Association president John Zingale.

Both were left out of Malawi's squad for last weekend's Cosafa Castle Cup quarter-final win in Botswana because it was too expensive to fly them back for the tie.
