At no point have I pushed for reserve teams branded as such. I have suggested that affiliates similar to the Reno 1868 or Rio Grande Valley Toros teams in USL would be the better way to go from an optics standpoint.
TFC II is playing in USL 1 this season and Bill Manning has stated recently that MLSE and CanPL have had discussions about the possibility of MLSE owning a CanPL team. A Whitecaps U-23 team is very much up and running this season and as reported on the CanPL website is ready and willing to play games against CanPL teams with two already happening in Alberta this month. There have been reports from a Quebec based journalist within the last year or so of the Impact wanting to get a new pro team into Quebec City. There is therefore a solid basis for concluding that if CanPL and the three MLS franchises cooperated more closely there could be 10 rather than 7 teams in the league right now.
There is nothing sad or funny about hoping the main stakeholders in Canadian pro soccer will cooperate and work together and there are some positive signs that it is beginning to happen.

Fair game. The Toronto section is all over the place too. They use TFC, Toronto FC, and Toronto. Arsenal's only mentions Royal Arsenal FC once.

So much for not being good enough for the Bundesliga yet and being demoted to Regionalliga. Hopefully the first of many more to come.

If they are going to make a fuss over the concept of being Canada's pro soccer league, both official languages should be taken very seriously from the get-go rather than having one treated as an afterthought. If that's their underlying mentality should we really be surprised that there was no team from Quebec at launch? Even having Alex Bunbury being the one pushing Montreal expansion looks a bit odd given he hasn't lived there for decades and is better known for his soccer exploits in Hamilton than anything he ever did in Montreal.

Most L1O teams are actually amateur to protect NCAA eligibilities, so it's never been fully clear to me what the huge difference from leagues like the AMSL, PCSL and VMSL is supposed to be.

As always happens in soccer, the unfortunate injury of one player provides an opportunity for another:

Even at the time the MLS kits looked bizarre and the first set of names like Burn, Wiz and Clash were being widely ridiculed, so if CanPL follows a similar trajectory in the years ahead we might still see some old CSL or NASL names get dusted off and recycled and some European sounding names thrown into the mix. Definitely hilarious but not sure that a youtube clip featuring Gunter Netzer should be taken as typical of West Germany in the 1970s.

Permanent resident status. Be another three years or so until he can get citizenship. You don't get that straight away.

Meanwhile good things seem to be happening in USL on crowds:

What we should be hoping for is that all the boats in the water will rise with the apparent tide of increasing popularity for our sport across North America. My understanding on Houston is that one side faces the sun and tends to be avoided by season ticket holders, so crowds are not quite as bad as pictures like the one above imply.

Great reflexes but too short to make all the saves he needs to make was what I remember of him. He's had his shot at showing what he can do as has Calum Irving. There's a definite tendency on this forum to overlook the possibility that some players just don't make the grade and at some point simply have to get on with the rest of their lives.
To be fair to yellowsweatygorilla though, someone who can comment on the relative quality of L1O players is not basing this on name recognition. It's possible that they are not being that generous in contract terms for the second keeper signed and better options turned down the terms on offer.

That post got you pigeonholed as a heretic basically, because any expression of concern over what's happening is interpreted as opposition to the league and wanting the league to fail. You only need to look at the rosters to see that with the arguable exception of the Forge things haven't gone all that smoothly on attracting players. There are still at least 24 Canadians playing for American USL Championship and USL1 teams in addition to the 25-30 that will be on the Fury and TFC II and another 35 on MLS rosters, so you are still looking at somewhere in the 80-90 range playing professionally in North America outside of CanPL before you start adding in Canadian players who are playing at a genuinely pro level overseas. Getting into a bidding war to get more of those guys into CanPL would have been a recipe for huge financial losses, so we are going to find out very soon now if there really has been a sizable previously untapped pool of domestic players that can provide watchable pro level soccer. Fingers crossed there has been.

You are dealing with people with widely varying IQ levels basically. When people can't grasp that somebody can express concerns about something without actually wanting that negative outcome to happen they start to turn people like JDG into hate figures to be disparaged and get very tribal in their outlook in a binary one league good the other league bad sort of way.

Not to get things too back on track, but I asked the journalist the context of the "we have one season" quote (cause, you know, context matters), and he confirmed that it was in the sense of "we have one season to convince people we aren't a perenial bottom-dweller".
Has nothing to do with CPL, MLS, or the survivability of the team, despite the hopes of some on here.
