...and there are at least two that are already showing some early warning signs on that for those on here who are capable of critical thought as opposed to unconditional blind faith. Having franchises fall by the wayside in the early years doesn't mean the league as a whole will fail, because taking Saskatoon seriously means they have a business plan in mind that caters to a lot of smaller markets, so they have more viable possibilities to potentially cycle through than the original CSL did back in the day when the goal the CSA had in mind at the outset was to be the soccer version of the CFL. What they need is to get enough strong expansion possibilities in the works so that one struggling franchise isn't an existential crisis for the entire league. There's an easy way to do that and it will be interesting to see if the necessary compromise gets made at some point.

There's really no indication that a second Ottawa or Gatineau team is in the works at this point. Suspect where things stand at the moment is that OSEG are not exactly on anybody associated with CanPL's Christmas card list at the moment, so if Eugene Melynk gave them a call to let them know that he's bored with the NHL and is planning to sell the Senators and bulldoze the Canadian Tire Centre, so it can be replaced with a 15,000 capacity SSS, they are highly unlikely to say no to him.

We're currently watching Canada's most talented squad in decades, and 13 of the players on the team against French Guiana either play for or got training from MLS teams.  That's not a coincidence.
There's a place for the CPL, as it provides both additional spots for Canadian players to develop and continues to expand the fan base for Canadian soccer fans.  But there's lots of fans in the big markets that follow MLS and won't bother to follow CPL, and if the MLS teams dropped down to CPL they just wouldn't follow them.

Where's Saskatoon in all of this would be an obvious question given Joe Belan described that at one point as being the probable team #7 after a 6 team 2018 soft launch.

I live in Toronto and we have TFC in MLS which has brought attention to soccer in a way Ive never thought possible. Has put buts in the seat which I thought would never be possible for a pro soccer team in Toronto never mind Canada . The success of the MLS in Toronto and the other Canadian teams has made the CPL possible and has brought owners into the CPL and not only owners but bright minds into the game with hope that pro soccer with the right planning and organization can work in Canada, so that places like Winnipeg, Halifax, Victoria, Calgary places that might never have had pro soccer at the CPL level will have now. So every once in awhile you guys in those cities that love to keep bashing the US and the MLS along with your bashing give a little thanks that the MLS came to Canada because if it didn’t the CFL is most likely all you guys would ever have , go Riders!

Doesn't change there still being a lot of TAM money to work with and a lot depends on what vdw agreed to in termination terms. If he was able to agree a pre-contract elsewhere, it might not be a complete payout.

Best feeling ever being in that stadium with over 30000 Canadian soccer fans TFC winning the MLS Cup my friend,  shit on the MLS all you want but that night in that stadium made being a soccer fan in Canada for all of my 54 years on this earth worth it . Yes in Toronto Canada ‘s biggest city and the media center of Canada soccer that night was all that mattered in this city, winning the fucken McDonalds of pro soccer I’ll take that any day!!

Could understand the angst if it was a vital hex game against Honduras or something, but all seems a bit over the top when it's Dominica that is involved with a population smaller than Sarnia.

My point was more that the $200 million number is probably more of a guesstimate on money turning over with factors like a very optimistic rate of league expansion factored in than something carved in stone in legal terms in a deal. It's probably very positive for the league that Mediapro is involved, but it sounds from the latest Paul Beirne podcast interview like CSB have taken a cheque and signed over control, so even the people on the inside may not be fully clear on what's going to happen this summer.

The context was a question along the lines of what was the one thing you would hope for at the end of year one. Beyond that he didn't sound like somebody who was contemplating failure. It was basically just a case of stating the obvious about what would provide the basis for strong future growth. Surprised nobody has mentioned some of the other things he talked about. The discussion of expansion {42:30 onwards} is worth a listen. The "regions of intensification" in southern Ontario and lower mainland BC part with target markets such as Windsor, London, Niagara region, K/W, probably Mississauga and maybe Brampton, Barrie and Durham specifically mentioned sounded good to me in terms of a vision of where they want to take things. Hope it works.

With a bit more digging apparently Yann Fillion is on a five year contract at FC Zurich, so he'll probably be available on loan  next season as well, if it's a case of the coach that rated him being long since fired and the more recent coaching hires having no use for him.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yann-Alexandre_Fillion
After his time with FC Montreal, Fillion signed a 5 year contract with Swiss Super League club FC Zürich in May 2016.
Might be a good fit for a newly emerging Laval or Quebec City franchise next year, if either of those were to happen.

Paul Beirne {45:00} points out at the end that what will make or break the league will be the number of renewals after year one. He emphasizes the importance of the game day experience related to fan group generated atmosphere in that context.

Which he is perfectly entitled to do as an American citizen, so what's your point? Canada has no issue with dual nationality so he is still every bit as entitled to play for Canada, because he hasn't made a definitive decision on this yet. Hopefully, the example of what happened with Teal Bunbury points him and others towards the CMNT. Unfortunately, a lot of young dual national players will probably think they are destined to be next Landon Donovan where the USMNT is concerned and will see it as the easier path to regular World Cup appearances.
