Played at a fairly high youth level in Windsor from I understand from his interviews. Think he has mentioned something about playing a youth game tied into a Detroit Express NASL game back in the day. His parents are/were from Scotland and he's from a Rangers supporting background.

How many people outside of Canada are ever going to want to watch CanPL, if the EPL, Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga and Ligue 1 are also readily available to them? There are relatively few leagues that command significant rights fees globally for that sort of reason. Think the original point being made was more that even in Canada the EPL is likely to draw significantly higher ratings than CanPL will and that the numbers DAZN are paying suggest that the $200 million figure quoted for the MediaPro deal is not a rights fee but a total economic activity number.

If CanPL are serious about pursuing all of the 200,000 population markets and up and were able to do it successfully there genuinely would be scope for over 20 teams a decade or so from now even without going crazy on having multiple teams in and around the three MLS metro area, which could push the number further out towards 30. OSEG might not find the prospect of having St John's, Sherbrooke, Windsor, St Catherines, Saskatoon and Kelowna joining the party particularly enticing and may see the long term vision of the USL Championship as being a clear step up from that and more to their liking in investment terms.
The people close to their front office definitely didn't seem particularly enthused about having lots of former L1O players on team rosters in the league they would be competing in, so my guess would be that they wanted something higher budget and focused on a vision that did not involve massive future expansion to enable future pro/rel. They probably expect it to all go tits up anyway long before it gets to that stage. Given I would love to see a London, Ont team as part of the mix I actually like the stated small market compatible vision and very much hope it works. Halifax is looking good so far, so there are some reasons to be upbeat.

    Some good votes for Bekker.
How did Ferguson get into this conversation?  The list of players I'd have ahead of him in this league is pretty long.

Judging by what you see on Ticketmaster on single ticket seat availability, things are going well in Halifax, Hamilton and Edmonton, but Winnipeg, Calgary, Victoria and York 9 are still question marks that become increasingly large in that order, so for anybody looking at it rationally rather than with unconditional blind faith, it's still too early to draw firm conclusions on whether CanPL is likely to hang in there on the medium to long term. Season ticket renewal rates will be pivotal even in the cities that have done well in that context for year one.
As things stand at the moment there are both positive and negative early signs available depending on what you choose to focus on. When the most likely eighth franchise appears to be Saskatoon, it's also difficult and also arguably unfair to make comparisons with the USL Championship. The market sizes involved if they expand out to 16 or so by 2026 are going be more like the non-MLS B team cities in USL 1, because of the much smaller total national population involved in Canada relative to the United States.

The exit fee is for a team wanting to leave the league, not sell the team.
USL is very restrictive and what the USL franchise agreement states they can do as a franchisor is also restrictive so there may very well be limitations and/or restrictions on Ottawa Fury selling their franchise rights. Franchise rights are also territorial in USL so not so simple to sell a right for the Ottawa market to someone wanting to have a club in another market. USL owners Nurock would have to agree to the sale and that seems unlikely.

Not a safe assumption when they want to move to another league rather than simply fold up shop. There is known to be an exit fee they have to pay. In retrospect, what is surprising is that the CSA sanctioned the move to USL back in 2017 when they could have told them to wait for CanPL to emerge.

Looks like a placeholder more than anything else when those two are involved and that CSB only got three of the seven corporate sponsors they were anticipating in this context. If they had a game of the week on TSN and Sportsnet it would probably have been easier for them to push this. Surprised York 9 wouldn't have their owner's construction company as the shirt sponsor. Local sponsors are often the way to go on this when you don't have a high profile in national media terms.

...and were called the Steelers. Think there has been talk of some sort of retro night for that. They trademarked the old name (not just CSL from 1987-91 but also ECPSL in the 1960s) for a reason.

Kourouma, who was born in Guinea, West Africa but raised in Montreal, is signing for the Wanderers after playing for two seasons with Miami in the USL Premier Development League.

Joining him in signing for the team is Abd-El-Aziz Yousef who was born in Saudi Arabia before growing up in Vancouver.
He was trying out for a team in Holland when his agent got him in touch with the Wanderers.

In addition to John Pugh who ran the Fury as a PDL team for many years, one of the main OSEG owners from the outset was Bill Shenkman who also owned a significant portion of a lower division English club called Millwall prior to the launch of the Fury NASL franchise, so don't think that's entirely accurate.
In reality I never questioned that a league was potentially in the works given the moratorium on further expansion in USSF leagues that was imposed by the CSA expressly for that purpose or that there were some CFL owners potentially involved given Bob Young had promised a pro soccer legacy where the Pan Am Games funding for THF was concerned. What I questioned was that it was something that the CFL were doing collectively and that there would be a league launched playing its games mainly in CFL stadia that would rival MLS in some meaningful way. That always looked like a fantasy scenario in the absence of some 2026 solo hosting scenario and even then it was far-fetched. A low budget league focusing mainly on developing young Canadian players rather than paying relatively high salaries to established CMNT players and big name imports is a much more sensible scenario than what used to be peddled by certain bloggers and podcasters.

... “We were part of the initial discussions with other teams across the league about being part of the inaugural season. But, when we looked at it around this time last year and recognizing the complexity of putting together the whole Canadian Premier League, it is a very challenging and complex project. But we felt that we were not adequately prepared to be part of the inaugural season. We were not as well endowed from a stadium infrastructure standpoint or organization and we needed more time to prepare.  ...

It was almost Toronto on being Inter. Don't think Inter Milan will win this one. There is also an Inter Bratislava, who have fallen by the wayside a bit, but used to be quite high profile, and there is a famous Internacional in Brazil, who have a big local derby with Gremio, so how can a Milan club claim exclusivity on this? That's something a few of the CanPL teams can justifiably claim in naming terms, but I guess CanPL is going through its Wiz and Burn phase at the moment.
