While there has been a lot of talk about the development of players, the CanPl will also provide a stage for Canadian Referee development.  Being a referee myself I will be following this closely.
    Let the rumours begin?

I think if you don't got in the first 2 rounds you'd be better off going to the CPL anyway - its unlikely with all of the academy products, international signings and the first 2 rounds that any team that drafts a player in the 3rd or 4th round is going to see them as a top prospect who is going to get a lot of 1st team minutes. Also bearing in mind that the size of the rounds keeps growing every year with more and more MLS teams - at 27th Kamal Miller would have been the equivalent first pick of the 3rd round in 2007 when TFC joined the league (13 teams), but he's early 2nd round in this draft.

He'll have a better chance for success in CPL, same with Comsia and Miller.

With no team in Ottawa or the Montreal area, I've been pondering on who my CanPL team will be, I think the Forge are now the leading candidate?

So Ottawa is in the Championship, as expected and as it should be.
Ottawa is also seeded higher than CPL and along with MLS teams, which I am sure we will all agree is weird (that's me being polite for all the young Voyageurs out there).
And the whole idea that Canadians playing for Ottawa being punished is just mean (also, me being polite). Also, the idea that Herdman will be less likely to notice a Canadian playing in the USL is pretty insulting to Herdman's abilities as a coach/manager.
And I can't speak to who is pretty here on the forums, having never met any of you. But Matty does look strangely familiar.

thats how i took it when i read it.
I get the impression MLS is (pardon the overly dramatic term) weaponizing the Domestic status. If you sign to play with them right out of college or an academy you get domestic status. If you go CPL route or another way before getting to MLS you're considered an international. Pretty silly stuff.

I don’t think anything “cleared the way” for him signing for Forge, he obviously just chose to sign there as he left school early to do so.  As you said, he could go to MLS or play another year and then go to MLS.  I don’t think him playing another year would hurt his draft stock all that much as he would likely be made by a domestic by MLS anyway just like Montgomery was.
Well of course there will be GA players on MLS reserve sides but you’re not going to see guys opting to sign for Ottawa or Reno instead of taking a MLS deal, that was my point.  Clearly a player leaving university early is serious about being a professional and for him to decide on CPL is a statement.  This is a smart move because he gets to choose where he starts his professional career and he doesn’t need to risk being drafted by an MLS team where he’s stuck behind a DP striker (or two) with virtually no chance of ever winning a starting spot.
If he wants to advance as a pro I’d argue this is the safest bet.  He can get minutes with a coach he’s familiar with who has a proven track record of moving players to higher levels as opposed to throwing your name in the MLS lottery and crossing your fingers you wind up in a good situation.

I think this is the most important CanPL signing to date, most of the signings so far have been the usual suspects.
