Teibert is still getting minutes in Vancouver and is a solid, veteran defensive option. I expect he'll at least be considered for some of our away games

From what I remember, the talk around Laryea when he was in college was that he was obviously a quality player, but nobody had any idea what his best position was - he could and did play everywhere in midfield, including wide, and did the same in Orlando, but I don't think anyone ever actually tried him at full-back until Vanney

RB have a VERY good track record of developing young players. If course, it's RB.
Would be weird to root for David to score goals while also wanting him to lose games

Not a great game by his standards but agreed that his teammates didn't do enough to find him. Fair to say Roma defended him well too, though they're definitely beatable in the return leg

Yeah Odjidja to Depoitre both times, wrong option. You can tell Depoitre is coming back from an injury, he looks off the pace
Gent have seen more of the ball than I thought they would, and that must be partly due to Roma going ahread so early, but David hasn't been all that involved. Whenever he has though Gent generally look more dangerous

DavemTFC reacted to footballfreak in Biennial World Cup Proposal
If we’re going full speed ahead on a biennial World Cup, here’s one possible way to make it work without it totally sucking. The reduced time between tournaments makes the following feasible. Buckle up buckeroos.
Qualifying? Where we’re going we don’t need qualifying.
Instead of one World Cup per cycle with only the top 32/48/64 teams, you have a 3-4 tier pyramid of 7 World Cups, with promotion and relegation between each tier.
    For example:
    Tier A 1x32 <—> Tier B 2x32 <—> Tier C 3x32 <—>Tier D 1x19.
Hockey already does something similar. The number of promotions/relegations can be tweaked as organizers deem appropriate. You can include continental quotas if absolutely necessary, though I think a simple meritocracy is ultimately more beneficial in the long run even if some editions are UEFA/CONMEBOL heavy.
    Pros
Fairness: Under this system, 192 of 211 teams are never any more than 4 years (2 WC cycles) away from “qualifying” for the A Tier World Cup - same as it is now. The top 96 teams are never more than 2 years away. The remaining 19 are only 6 years away, and realistically there was never any chance of a team that bad qualifying under the current system. Decongestion: No qualifying means happy club teams. Competitiveness: dead rubber matches become more meaningful, almost every team has something to play for in every game. Revenue: Potential to add more matches (relegation knockout for the bottom 16/third place teams) while maintaining the 32 team, 4 group structure we all prefer to the 48 team abomination that’s coming Parity: more balanced competitions produce more entertaining games. Continental tournaments become more special: Removing WCQ against the other nations in your region makes Continental qualifiers and Finals games more meaningful. Scalability: Tiers B,C and D require progressively less infrastructure to host by way of smaller stadiums, lower quality training facilities, and less fan accommodation. Lower tiers can also split into smaller 16 team tournaments to reduce stadium demands even more. Novelty: Tell me you wouldn’t watch the Tier 4 final between Somalia and Gibraltar just for the sheer strangeness. Player Opportunity: Tournaments present an opportunity for young players to showcase themselves. Maybe a young wunderkind from Eritrea or Tonga gets discovered where he would have otherwise floundered in obscurity. Reduced Travel Cost: Particularly for the minnows and ultra minnows (like the CSA ), travel cost is prohibitive to playing games. International games in every other year would now be compressed into a few weeks in a single host nation.
    Possible cons:
Hosting complications: Without assurance that your team will be in tier A 4+ years from now, picking hosts becomes more problematic. A potential solution is enforced promotion should a host team fall below the tier they are scheduled to host in. Eg. if France gets relegated after 2026, but are due to host in 2030,  the number of merit-based promotions would be cut by one in 2028, and France would play Tier 2 as a warmup for hosting. Not really sure how to solve the reverse problem wherein the D-tier host gets promoted out before hosting, but perhaps such a small scale event would require less lead time and 2 years would be sufficient. No home qualifiers: FIFA wants to reduce qualifiers, but this strategy removes them entirely, which admittedly is a bummer. It does, however, present more opportunities to host Tier B/C/D Finals tournaments. Fewer local derbies: Personally, I think this can be mitigated by structuring continental competitions properly, but it is possible that Canada v Uzbekistan in a Tier B group match doesn’t have them same fire as Canada v Honduras might. I still think the weight of the occasion would be enough to create fast foes, but YMMV. Timing: 211 countries all playing at once in the same month is likely too much, IdeaIly it would be better from an audience standpoint to spread the tiers out. eg: Tier D in March, C in April, B in May, A in June. This has potential to create player availability issues with clubs, but at least these issues would be spread out over the calendar. Overall load would be reduced though, so this might be an acceptable compromise. Instead of Premier League clubs losing 4-9 internationals every month for a week, it might be 1-2 different players each month. You can keep playing league games while only missing 1-2 players.  I’m sure there’s more, and I’m sure you’ll all let me know what they are. If you made it this far, I’m so sorry. Thoughts? Tweaks?

Hit the nail on the head. As a TFC fan, when we were in MLS Cup and CCL contention, not playing Canadian youth didn't bother me. If anything, seeing them run out Jordan Hamilton or Mo Babouli terrified me. But now that they're shit, they need to decide what they want to be. Don't say we're going to lean on youth and only feature guys out of desperation. It wouldn't bother me if they were upfront and said we always want to be a team with a big salary and veteran players that can win - provided they were willing to do right by their youth, develop them as kids, and move them on to better situations. But we all we get is them sitting on the bench and if we're lucky playing injury time.
Either play them and recognize there will be a learning curve (which cannot be any worse than the tire fire we're seeing now) or put them in opportunities where they can actually get some damn minutes and develop.

Not that long ago, we had a lot of youth camps and matches (around the time of the England friendly where tomori appeared), and really not a lot came out of it (I still believe in them though); and at that time, we weren't playing many men's senior matches if memory serves.  Considering Covid, the cancellation of the FIFA World Cups and Concacaf regional tournaments, and the state of the finances of the CSA, I think prioritising funding for the senior team's focus on World Cup qualification with the generational talent we have is the best allocation of the scarce resources we have.  If we do well and qualify (which I think we all believe we can), that will be the best avenue to get significantly increased funding both for the lead up to 2026 and to fund youth programs.  I wish we were in a better spot but we are where we are and I think the CSA is making the right choice.  Sure, you can criticise them for past efforts but I am making my judgment on where we are today and I fully back what they have prioritised.  Remember, we haven't played friendlies or competitive matches with paid attendance in 2 years until this latest window which is completely down to Covid but at the same time have had to play more matches this year than ever which has jacked up our costs immensely because of the number of matches and the Covid protocols we have had to follow for each of them.  We just don't have the cash for "friendlies" for youth matches which I acknowledge may lead us to lose a player or two but frankly, qualifying for the 2022 will likely result in us gaining more players overall.  If i was running the CSA, this is exactly the decision I would take.

To be frank, I think it is the penalties that are the actual issue.  I can’t cite specific examples but my recollection is that he has given them away in some pretty crucial moments - and that they have been game-defining.  Fairly or not, I think that is why they stand out.  The alternative is that a whole bunch of us just have some weird irrational distrust of Doniel, and I don’t know why that would be the case.

It's not only that, but he's an absolute equalizer when it comes to the dark arts/$hit disturber games that all the Central American teams play on you.  He goes down at the slightest contact, he gets up and sticks his nose right up to yours, he'll give you a little shove or a cleat as he leaves, he's a guy you want to just punch in the face.  And he's all ours... 😍

This just seems so ridiculous.  You can require players travelling to be vaccinated.  There's regular testing and testing upon coming back to the country.   The 10 day quarantine for a double vaccinated player who received tests prior to getting on a flight and upon arriving in the country is nonsensical.  They aren't protecting the general public.  All they are doing is allowing English clubs the ability to avoid the annoyance of having international players play during international breaks.

I’m not against government mandates, I’ve supported lockdowns, etc but I guess what I’m saying is that for professional athletes (who have access to all the money and resources from the national associations) there can be a much greater assurance that they will be safe from what’s happening in a red list country rather than if a regular citizen went there on vacation.

It’s ridiculous that this is happening 18 months into a pandemic. If anything it should be the clubs in these nations that suffer the consequences, not the national teams. That is the most direct way to pressure change. If foreign nations are complaining it will fall on deaf ears but if EPL clubs are the ones getting screwed over there will be changes. And they should suffer the consequences of their government just as everyone else has this past 18 months.
Just so unbelievably dumb at this juncture. Test players as many times as you like and move on. Forcing a quarantine does nothing - it’s just a flex of power for no reason. These players can go out clubbing in the UK but can’t play for their national team it’s absurd.

A lot of our players had subpar games (Borjan, Vitoria, Eustaquio, Hoilett, Larin, maybe Atiba the exceptions) so I'm frankly relieved with the draw because we did not look ready for how much more intense concacaf gets for quals and could easily have lost.
Also some baffling tactical decisions by Herdman. There's no point having wingers switch sides (and stay on those opposite sides for half an hour) when they're better in their original positions. We are generally much more connected with a midfield three and despite Stache and Atiba's best efforts, it was tough to get a lot going. Also if you're gonna do the Kennedy for Miller sub do it at HT when Miller is obviously struggling, not with 5 mins left once he actually looks good.
I'm hopeful everyone can use this as a wake up call for what to expect during the Oct and I'm encouraged that as bad as I think we were today we still got a result and looked like a constant threat. I think we will get better. If we get a result in Nashville and then beat El Salvador that's an ok window.
Crowd sounded phenomenal - wish I could have made the time/money effort to be there. Nice to see BMO Field have a home side who look like they can actually win for the first time in a while.
