Anyone else frustrated with all the talk this team is doing with the lack of walk that comes with it?
In a match last night that a minimum 2-0 scoreline was required there was maybe 1 chance created up until the 66th minute. All the 'big time' attacking players on the pitch did nothing all game. Lack of passion and desire from the attacking 3-4 players. Soria and Marcelin had to cover ground for 3-4 players and were absolutely gassed by the end of the game. Randy, probably one of the highest paid players in the league was coasting from what I saw. It was funny as I heard the following comments in the stands by people in Edmonton who are respected in the soccer community:
"spends more time arguing with teammates and refs then he does trying to be productive"
"look he's fake defending" directed at the lack of effort and laziness shown while his team was pressing
"should have been subbed off at the half" when he was subbed off
"what a waste of a signing if this is what he's bringing to the table"
I'll be the first to say that I really thought this guy had the potential to be a star in the league but is doing nothing to show it.
Son was in front of my eyes told off by a supporter who was so frustrated at the consistent lack of a touch he's shown over the last few games that security had to step in to remove the fan.
Tomi for a captain is practically invisible on the pitch. I've heard more out of Powley, Ramon, Kareem to try and get their guys going.
I also think that the coaching staff really needs to start looking at themselves in terms of player selection. I watch training sessions and the players on the bench or not dressed dominate the players that have been playing. They are young, eager, and have a point to prove. For me they will at least show passion and from every game I have seen it is these young guys that consistently provide the spark when they are brought on. So much talk has come from the staff about local product and their chemistry together but we have yet to see it. If we are going to lose the league anyways, I'd rather do it watching guys that care, and are playing the style that is being preached as opposed to so called professionals that seem to be going through motions to collect a paycheck.
Starting 11 next match should be 3-5-2 (James GK, Moses, Didic, Soria, Esua, Khabra, Marcelin, Allen Zebie, Bruno Zebie, Ongaro, Velado)

Edem has physically gotten stronger and much faster since his last stint with FCE when he was a 19,20 year old. He also did not get along or fit into Colin's playing style and went on trials in Sweden, he ended up picking up a serious achilles injury prior to signing a contract in Sweden and has been rehabbing and training hard for a moment like this. Edem will shock the league with his play this upcoming season.

    Sure...I'll do that.
This wasn't a situation where United came to the Whitecaps and said we want to look at the kid. This was the agent that went to European clubs and offered them Davies without the Whitecaps approval. The Whitecaps have sent young players to Europe in the off season for training stints in the past (including Bustos and Adekugbe) and I am sure they will do it again when they feel the time is right, not when an agent is thinking about dollar signs. I do agree that this is a pivotal season for Davies to improve his club performances and a strong training camp for him should give him that chance.

If you are under the age of 18 in Canada your obtaining a citizenship is based on your parents success during their citizenship test. His parents were not successful (more than once), I believe most likely due to language barriers and now have to go through a very tedious process of why there is such a language barrier for someone that has lived and worked here for years. That being said there are special circumstances in which a minor can have his/her file removed from their parents and they can obtain citizenship alone. This is the case of Davies, however, this also has to go through the proper legal and federal government channels. I do know that it is close to being done and he was gutted that it couldn't be complete before the U20's.

Not sure how Shome in off-season form, playing with players he doesn't know, and playing at least some of the time out of position would have been expected to go out and look great. Additionally, if teams are thinking they can watch a couple of combine games and know a player, I'm not sure what to say. Any team that went back and watched film on his FCE time would know whether he was worth it to them or not, poor combine performance or no.

Robbo is likely using him because he will make a difference. He has said so himself and indeed he has added energy on the field. If you're good enough, you're old enough.
Krkic had a lot of hype, but never reached the level you'd expect, as did Gio Dos Santos, but both have had good careers, like you said. However, we can't say for sure that's due to first team exposure.
Clearly he is effective at the MLS level, so why not use him? What matters is that he's making a difference for the first team; that is more important than how he's performing in the USL.
It doesn't make sense to keep him with WC2 until he dominates, when he's demonstrating he can already preform well in MLS. Domination with the second team (Bustos) doesn't always Translate to first team usefulness anyways....

After reading up on the citizenship laws out of curiosity surrounding Davies/Guillard, I came across something interesting...adoptees are granted immediate citizenship and "the category of adopted persons includes persons who will be or are adopted as adults."
Ok, so who else is up for gross abuse of our immigration system?

The way it works if you are 18 years or younger is that the mother/father must apply, complete the test and obtain citizenship, the child will then automatically receive theirs. His parents have had complications so therefor Alphonso now has 2 options; 1. Wait until he is 18, apply on his own, complete a test and receive his citizenship. or 2. CSA/Whitecaps can intervene/hire a lawyer that will prove it is not his fault that his parents have had complications and that him receiving citizenship before 18 is helpful for him, and that he can be a valuable member and contributor to Canada. The latter should be a very easy plea considering at 15 he is already a professional athlete and playing for Canada in international competition is a dream of his. Hopefully the Whitecaps and CSA are on top of things. To my understanding this has been done for other athletes in Canada, only difference is that they were already 18+ years of age, they just had their process expedited.

On a side note, is there any rules to having players like him, and Tabla for instance invited to these 1st team camps but not to participate or be on the match roster? I think this would be a great way to integrate them into the men's team and a chance for coaching staff to see how they measure up.

Will be interesting to see who Robbo puts out there in the second game. Will say alot about how seriously he's taking the tournament this year.
Also, this probably isn't the thread for it...but man, can at least one of these whitecaps kids we keep hearing are "knocking on the first team door" put in a performance that earns them more time with the first team? Every time they get an opportunity they seem to fall on their face.

I don't think it's a quality of play issue with Saiko, rather a "where can I play and make a living that's worth it while being away from my wife and daughter" issue. Regarding Saiko, remember that he was released after the Scorpions traded for an international player, putting them over the limit. Both he and Paul Hamilton had offers to play in NASL in 2014, but by all account the offers did not pay well, and it wasn't worth it for them to chase the dream anymore. This is as per Steven Sandor's article in Plastic Pitch from last year (can't remember what issue).
We've seen this with other Canadian NASL players too, Philippe Davies and Terry Dunfield as specific examples. Both had offers to play, Davies had 2.5 years left on his; both had better offers financially to become a TD for a local club or a colour commentator.
This is why it concerns me that Miller would freeze out someone like Roberts, if he's released, his options for a pro career are very limited. It's basically USL or give it a go in a low league in Europe.

This has happened time and time again with a lot of younger guys not willing to sign an extension when they are nearing the end of their contracts. I know Miller has in the past frozen out players until an extension has been signed. I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe Mallan is a free agent at the end of the season. Maybe he is trying to keep options open of playing elsewhere. I also do know that he was told he would be starting against Ottawa (not sure which leg) and he felt tightness in his hamstring during the warm up from a prior injury and didn't think he was fit enough to play. That did not sit well with Miller either, but I commend Mallan for putting the team first and not risk playing if he is not 100% fit off of an injury. Either way if his contract is up, i doubt he stays in Edmonton after this.

He is physically gifted that is for sure. But he obviously has a lot more than just size and speed as he has regularly been called up to train with the U18's, USL, and the first team from time to time dating back to last September. If you had a chance to watch any of the game against Sounders there were two moments where you could see how special this kid is.
    1. he picked up the ball in his own half, cut towards the middle beating a sounders player, played a wall pass with mattocks splitting 2 more defenders and then 1 touch pass to the winger. he still continued his run looking for the through ball only to be brought down by an elbow to the face.
    2. ball was played from the back and full speed alphono sprinted to it with a defender right on his back, with no hesitation took his first touch to turn on a dime past the defender and get out of a high pressure situation, turning it into an attack.
These are things that some of the first team guys have a hard time doing. He is special in the sense that if he stays in the right environment and focused, might be one of the best young talents this country has produced.
