Former Vancouver boy here. I have some friends in both Langley and Surrey, and I think there's a huge difference between having a team in north Surrey near Skytrain versus a team north of Langley. The difference would be palpable to having a team in downtown Sauga versus a team at the far north end of Vaughan, which is the proposed future location for Y9. You're going to get a far more urban and concentrated number of fans with the former, close to a downtown.
For me, the single biggest factor of Halifax's success is the stadium's proximity to downtown. The north Surrey area seems close enough to its commercial centre and to Skytrain to replicate some of that success, while this Langley location seems to have neither. I mean, I see that this thread was in agreement a year ago that north Surrey would easily be the best location for a Fraser Valley club, and I hope the investors continue to seek that location.

    Quick thoughts on game #2
Positives first. Rivero great touch, great composure on the goal, but also really smart decision-making and calmness with the ball up top. Thought he had an average or fine game for the opener as well, and it makes sense to have him start and let Wright be the energetic backup. Murofushi a magnet with the ball again, JDC has really re-made himself as an energetic box to box 8 instead of the deep-lying 6 that he played most last season that he wasn't very good at. Ferrari showed he can push for a starting spot, definitely fits right into the squad.
Negatives. Manny was misplacing too many passes or losing the ball too easily, as he's done often last season as well. Great ball in the first 10 minutes though. We would still rather see Jimmy ask Telfer and Petrasso to switch flanks, at least during mid-game, because they are too predictable playing as classic wingers at LW and RW respectively. Our defense as a collective is not playing to the high standard we set for the team last season, which is a bit of a downer, cuz it's the same 5 starters at the moment. For our offense to shine, we need some unpredictability, and to me, that's going to come from having Telfer and Petrasso cutting in as inverted wingers, as Blasco and Bustos did to us all game long, and Fisk in the opener.

Ingham makes some really nice saves but god damn he makes a lot of errors too, out backup is a 17 year old kid too.
Saturday is a must win vs Valour coming off two days of rest. Petrasso and Rivera need to start, I really hope they didnt give up on Vasconselos after one game so I am hoping he plays on saturday.
Porter has no business starting on the wing at this point. Arnone should get a look at CB as thompson and Gasparratto havent looked great. Manny was pretty bad but I will give him a pass its his first game in almost a year.
Maybe give Porter a game at RB as Doner has been shakey, what was he doing blocking ingham on that corner. I figure they need to win 3 games to advance. So beat HFX, Valour and FCED which is doable, any points vs Forge or Cav would be a bonus.

Last night was disappointing to say the least.  Concentration MUST to be better.  I always think there are key points* to a match were everyone needs laser focus Y9 has failed in both games at those points and have paid the price.  Ingham hasn't been convincing when he's come for balls on corners.  The goal and Pacific's best chance before then both came off of corners that Ingham should've done better on.
Going off last nights comments by @SoccMan & @Ams1984 in the match thread re: Jimmy I wouldn't be so quick to pull the trigger, even after this "season".  It would be very rash for any team to make those decisions after a tournament like this.  Especially with the loss of Hamilton, Ugarriza, Jaco and Lopez. Manella has miss the first two games and Petrasso missed the first 25% of the round. It would be harsh to make any long term decisions based on The Island Games.
As frustrating as it is at times the CPL is about developing coaches as much as it is players.  Jimmy's got the credentials and his subs have had an impact in both games thus far.
*Stouffvillain's key points - Opening/closing 5 minutes of each half, 5 minutes after a goal, corners & free kicks.

Yes, another inverted winger fan, nice haha. You know I agree 100% about Telfer and Petrasso at RW and LW respectively. I think Vasconcelos would also find it a more natural fit at LW than RW for sure. I think Telfer was at RW and Vasconcelos at LW for about 15 minutes in the opener, I did see them switch flanks time to time. I think, if Rivero and Vasconcelos were allowed to play longer, while we had the man up, then they would have found more joy for sure.
Rivero impressed me with his workrate, he was playing ST on offense, but coming all the way back to CAM on defense, and he also created a nice chance in the first 15 minutes. Vasconcelos obviously disappointed for most of us probably. And yep, Porter is a defensive specialist to me by now, I would definitely rather see Murofushi start in one of the CM spots, he was our most consistent player in the 2nd half. Of course, if Mannella and Manny are fit, then who knows what happens. Arnone would probably not be starting at CDM if the two were fit though.

I usually hate how often "must win" gets thrown around but in a 7 game round one you can't really afford to drop any points.
York came out flat against Ottawa and can't afford to not be the dictators of the match again.  Come out with your best lineup possible for this game. If Petrasso is good to go I'd like to see him start with Telfer and Vasconcelos.  See what Gabby can bring in the first half and don't be shy to sub him at half if it isn't significantly better than what we've seen.  Manny, Di Chiara with Muro the middle.  Thompson had a good game Saturday and deserves the start again.

What a great half for Canadian youngsters! Fun game in general. Normally I would say it is a shame the red spoiled the game but for the neutral it made it much better!
Kapor MOTM for me. Acuna a cut above. Excited to see him for the next 5 games at least.

I think Jimmy played it too safe here with his lineups. A very similar lineup to last years.
Vasconcelos disappointed me. Hope this isn't the best he can give otherwise we may have signed a dud. Ingham was also poor as they didn't have many shots at goal and conceded both. They weren't impossible saves either.
The subs changed the game. Lowell Wright is a player and a half. Love his instant impact. Also liked what Max Ferrari had to show.

Max Ferrari from that soccer factory that is Humber College in Toronto and also from Aurora youth soccer club and a League 1 Ontario standout last year with Aurora . A shutout to Aurora FC who are rumoured to want to pull out of League 1 Ontario please reconsider by taking away a good pathway to bigger things for your players!

Acuna is head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch. Well deserved lead.
Neufville is a great addition to the league. You can see his youth pedigree but also sometimes in his decision making why he dropped down a few leagues. Quality addition though.

Ugh... York 9 hasn’t been crisp in possession, and they’ve not really caused Ottawa much trouble at the back. It was an even first half, I’m not really too surprised though that Ottawa is 1-0 up given the flow of play.

The pressure is on Y9 not to lose to a new team regularly predicted to be last place while being hyped as a potential #1. What if Francisco Acuña is a beast in this league?

Starting lineup on the weekend disappointed.  The best chances were Telfer and Rivero shots that they both blasted right at Zabal. Crosses were awful, too much air under them make for easy clearances.  Both Vasconcelos and Rivero were not what was expected.
Substitutions were effective.  Ferrari, Wright, Halley all showed no fear in taking the field for the first time for the club. Murofushi was solid in midfield.
Di Chiara was vital for them but was anyone else having flash backs to last year when the penalty was given?

I really hope Petrasso, Mannella and Manny can play next game. I even would like to see Fugo play a bit for Abzi.
I want to see Telfer at RW and Petrasso at LW.
Porter does nothing for me up top. I think he would probably be best at RB and Doner was poor so maybe he could start a game there.

I’m hearing rumours that York 9 looking to eventually move to a stadium that might be built at Woodbine racetrack in Etobicoke part of Toronto. A major redevelopment of the Woodbine racetrack area is already going on . Therefore , if this actually happens a rebranding of this club will be due. Calling yourself York 9 out there would make no sense . Only problem with that Woodbine racetrack area getting there by public transport is not the greatest with no real subway link up to that area .

I have been noticing McNab mentioning the Baldassarra's more in all the interviews he's been doing as well.  I don't particularly like it as most of the time when you hear about how much money owners have spent it is because the owners are unwilling to spend more.
I think what McNab is trying to deliver the point that they are committed as evident with the millions they have spent to date.  The Baldassarra aren't unwilling to spend, look at the caliber of players they have brought in this season, they have to be one of the top spending clubs, I get more of the sense that McNab is trying to let people know that they are methodical on how they spend.
I see parallels to Belan in Saskatchewan in terms of looking before they leap.  Any re-brand or stadium plans will happen once they believe it is best for the club not just because they have the money to do it.

Angus McNab seemed to make a point of mentioning the Baldasserra family a lot in a way that made it sound like they need to see a viable strategy moving forward before they will pump large sums of money in. Seemed to suggest that people who talk about needing a marketing budget don't grasp how many millions they have already spent so far. Too bad the guy doing the interview didn't ask about the stadium renovation because that is the 500lb gorilla in the room at the moment.

    Re: re-branding
They are looking at all things but there isn't a decision either way. Response they've received is balanced, people from outside of the market seem to be in favour of it.  Owners have put millions into the club already, asking them for more would have to be confident that it would cut into the market.  Would you invest a million dollars in a crowded marketplace without universally positive appeal?
Elements within the brand are strong (i.e. nicknames) but there isn't allot outside of the trillium flower and the stripes.
Club was behind where they should've been after the training camp in terms of marketing.
No names disclosed, it isn't about a name it's about a brand.
Surprised from statements from supporters groups as none had spoke to him about their feelings.

This is a good interview with Ryan Telfer.  His accent makes him sound like a laid back guy but it is clear he is driven and the kind of guy you want to have in your squad.
Q: Is potentially getting to the World Cup in the back of your mind when you are on the training pitch?
A: No it is a the front of my mind, it is why I get up everyday.
Telfer isn't here because he thinks it'll be a free ride because he's been here already, he's back because it's the best place for him to keep climbing the football ladder.
The thing he takes away from his time with TFC was how intense training was with Giovinco, Bradley and Altidore and how that intensity translated to everyone on the team.  You hear how demanding the Y9 training sessions are, good to know one of the top players in the league appreciates putting in the work.  As it resonated with him at TFC it will do the same to the newer pros at Y9.
