The ref in the Spain-US fulfilled the rule, where every favoured team is also favoured in reffing in this WC.
I thought she was terribly biased and struggled hard to come up with those penalties, which were iffy at least. In the last one, the player dives after being touched, however slightly. I found it unfair, and frustrating, since beating the US is tremendously hard to do.
They continue to chat with the refs, complain, whine, and use their reps and gamesmanship to get an advantage, as they have been doing for years. Seriously: what US player looked really good today?
Spain is happy to have shown they can make the US look mediocre, and attack them, even handle them physically. But I think they have to be disappointed, in the big picture: it was a performance to maybe get to taking them out of the tournament, or at least get into the extra period.

Whatever happens in this Spain vs USA game.... even if the USA goes on to win it the whole thing...
This World Cup is the one that marks the change that in the future it will be forever won by footballers, and not athletes.

I want us to start with 1 goalkeeper and 10 outfield players. If not, I riot.

A couple pics from the meet-up at Montpellier, finally getting to this. That is UT; a Voyageurs who I won't name unless he claims who he is, but he is still out there following the women; and yes, that restaurant was in Montpellier too, wouldn't you know.

The pregame gathering started a bit slow as I guess the non Voyageurs who joined us apparently have not been adequately trained in the art of drinking from midday onward. Was wondering if my host at the bar had concluded that I did not actually have any friends at all until Sam arrived. With the good weather we relocated from the backroom to the patio and then it started to grow steadily. I think we had at least 60 people there when we headed off to the stadium. Did a 1.5 km march with singing and chanting and the new conscripts joined in enthusiastically. Big shout out to Anton, who I know as one of the Ottawa Fury capos, who brought his infectious enthusiasm as a guest capo for the occasion. People will join in if they get exposed to supporter culture and if you make an effort at outreach. Also much appreciation to Sam who set me up with my ticket and who is the type of Grade A Voyageur that you want to be around when you travel.
After the game quite a few Canadians reassembled at Mr. Foggs and my group stayed until we got kicked inside after the patio closed and then got kicked outside when the bar closed for good for the night. I thought it went very well.

The pregame meetup for the Round of 16 match at Parc des Princes will be at The Moose - Canadian Bar  16 Rue des Quatre Vents, 75006 Paris. This bar is close to the Luxembourg Gardens and a short walk from the Odeon Metro Station where the #10 Metro takes you to the stadium. Open from 11 AM to 2 AM.

This almost feels like a bad PR decision. I can't see how any player can get to this level through the ranks of soccer, or any sport, and think this is a good idea.

I saw the Buchanan piece did by TSN yesterday and simply flabbergasted that an Ontario provincial coach told her at 14 that the only reason she didn't make the provincial team was her lack of financial resources. Something is definitely rotten with the Ontario system.
Fortunately, Lawrence's parents stepped in to help Buchanan.

I don't think they have been that bad.
The league has been fairly even overall.
Even in the Cup they were only one favourable ref decision from advancing. They were hard done by in that regard

The only reason there ever was or still is a team is because of the ownership group; Tom and Dave Fath. They spent big and lost a lot of money on the NASL version of the team and they have NEVER shied away from spending what was needed on players, travel etc. The same is true now. Lack of budget is definitely NOT the issue. The pieces look good on paper but are not working together. That is on the coaches that scouted and picked the players and the players themselves who can't seem to come together into a cohesive unit.
If you think the ownership is the problem then you really don't know squat. Get yourself educated about FCE and don't talk shit about the GodFATHer again.

I was at the match.  We completely dominated in every way but the ability to score in the final 3rd. Schmidt was an absolute stud. Prince is a real talent.  The ability to possess the ball and win it back was something I have never seen from a Canadian side (men or women)
The problem for me is Sinclair is passed it. She just doesn’t have the legs anymore to run 90 minutes. She was completely gassed in the second half. Definitely has also lost a step or two even though pace was never her thing.
She should be on maximum 60 minutes and Huitema who is young and very technical can come in for her and create space with her movement.
If we stick with playing Sinclair 90 mins, we are dead. I would say semis would be our upper limit but more likely out at quarters as once we go behind (and we will at some point), we won’t be able to close the gap.
Getting her off with fresh legs for the last 30 or more, we got a chance to go all the way

So I woke up this morning and immediately came to this page - I was stunned. It seemed Canada may have lost...then saw we won. 1-0 perhaps, winner from David. Then checked the news and saw it was a blow out 4-0. Man, have expectations from the V's changed over the years!

I think we have the same goal differential, but they have scored more goals than us.  So, I think the tie-breaker is in favour of the Netherlands.
And I was also pretty impressed with how well we handled the Ferns today.  They didn't look nearly as good as they did against the Dutch, which I assume is all down to us.

I thought we were amazing, the decision making is on a very high level, way higher than ever before for our women. The starters are very well organised and really in tune with each other.
We also have some great talent at a young age. Sinclair had a rough start, first half, then really got into a groove and was unlucky not to score.
You have to take more risks up high, but that is normal, and we still need to mix up our attack a bit, but as is, we are quite powerful. I think we can beat Holland, but they have a diversified attack, which I think we can close down if we help each other out. Do we have the tie-breaker in our favour in case of drawing Netherlands?

I am not sure she does it at this WC.  Most of the plays I see, she isn't in an optimal scoring position and tries to be a provider rather than forcing a low % effort.
Either way, if it doesn't happen, I hope the CSA would line up a friendly home game or two against a couple of sacrificial minnows to make sure she does it - and ideally at home.

Rankings are lists. For some strange reason we are obsessed with looking at lists. That's why the internet is filled with dumb lists because people know we can't help ourselves but to click on them.

I have to say a power ranking based on a single table league is either peak stupid or someone taking the piss
