ThiKu got a reaction from aloyol in How would you rank Canada in regards to the other CONCACAF teams?
People keep calling this The Golden Generation.

It might be. It might. But how about we actually beat A Real Team first and see if these kids are any good. Very young and inexperienced. Unlikely they can win in Central America yet. Gold Cup will be a great warm-up. But that we've been playing just 1 game during the NL matches and not getting in games for these kids in Central America or at least the Caribbean during these last two windows is a mistake, I fear.

Tommy Wheeldon Jr said Cavalry designs will be out in the next couple weeks. Not sure actual kits. York 9 are doing that launch late November which will reveal the first players, and with that I assume, the kits. I'm sure CanPL is looking at November/early December to have them ready for Christmas. All speculation at this point though.

Absolutely.  The increase in quality was undeniable.  Skill levels were doubling, but the budgets were the same.  Simply organic growth from having the same player pool train/play in a professional environment.
In those 6 years, we produced a quality European roster.  And it was the young guys that really benefitted.
Peschisolido was 15 when he first broke into the first team.  In a few years he was becoming a legend in England, playing for West Brom, Sheffield United, among others.  He is legendary to those clubs to this day.
Radzinski was 15 as well.  Had a hugely successful career in Belgium, and EPL with Everton.
Bunbury (who is supervising the CPL trials) led Maritimo to the Portuguese Cup, Europe, Most Valuable Foreign Player and all time goal scorer for Maritimo.  Alex is another legend in Portugal.
There were lots of other guys that went on to lengthy, impressive careers in Europe.  And they all credited the CSL with their careers.  All the young raw, potential Canadian talent that has wasted away in MLS academies over the years can now have the opportunity to truly blossom and reach their full potential.  And that is why the CPL came to fruition.  To stop the rot and put us back on the map.  Whatever initial budget we need to make this league successful in the long term,  is good with me.

Do you really need to pay 25 players like that when maybe 15 or 16 at most will be getting significant playing time? As long as the core of the roster is training full-time filling out the rest of the roster with local guys that can train with the team some of the time on weeknights and be called up from local amateur or semi-pro clubs and youth teams when needed is no big deal. I'm skeptical that you can make this fly in the smaller 200,000-500,000 markets otherwise. Ottawa is a different story being an almost MLS-sized market, so it's difficult to make one size fit all but longevity and expansion are more likely by catering to the needs of the smaller markets rather than the larger ones.
Edit: and just to provide an example of how this can work well for Canadian soccer. Having that local low budget component to the roster is how the 1990 London Lasers provided Jason Devos with the first stepping stone to being a CMNT mainstay.

I honestly could care less what the CPL budget is.  It can be 1.2 million, $850,000, $700,000..........who cares.  Nor do I care if CPL is better than Ottawa Fury, or has a bigger budget, etc.....In the big picture, it's meaningless.
CPL is in it for the long haul.  CPL need a viable, sustainable business plan.  I believe they have that.  If they can stick to the script, it will grow in quality every year.  And if the old CSL is any indication, the difference in quality year to year will be massive.
As a season ticket holder, that's what I want and expect.  A Canadian league that's in it for the long haul.  The rest will take care of itself.

I'm sure I read that Surrey will actually be bigger than Vancouver by 2030. Placing a team there makes a lot of sense for the long term.
If we end up with pro/rel to a "CanPL 2", I could see multiple teams across the Lower Mainland, including the tri-cities (PoCo/Co/PoMo?)

Coquitlam is an interesting idea, but I think that Surrey has the greatest possibility. It has a large population, a rapid transit line and will soon have two LRT lines, and is South of the Fraser River which will make it more attractive to those living in the Fraser Valley. It is also far enough removed from Downtown Vancouver that I doubt it will have too compete too much with the Whitecaps. In my dreams, it is also far enough west in the Lower Mainland that there would be room for another team in Abbotsford once soccer overtakes hockey as our number one sport.

So... Canada fail to qualify for the U20 WORLD CUP for a decade, and then when it finally seems like there is the talent to make some real noise, the players are too good to call up?
F#%k that. Call up everyone. Dominate. And most of all, for the love of god, QUALIFY!!!

Davies MUST leave Vancouver on or exceptionally near his 18th bday. Any Euro club. Any! Ok freak out over. He'd be best served going to Germany. As much as I'd love to see a Canadian thrive at Man Utd, he won't. Although he is certainly a Mourinho-type - I think, I know, he'd be found out. Let him go to Germany. They will have more patience, and he'll get into a team.

I think Tabla's ceiling is higher than Davies unfortunately.  It's not fair to say Davies has done more when Tabla has actually scored goals in the league.. I think Tabla could develop a ton at Barca, he has elite skill.. one of the best technical players for his age in Canada/US without a doubt.  Davies is just a natural freak of an athlete, he is confident, decently skilled and incredibly fast but I think he needs to get out of Vancouver sooner than later if he's to reach his potential.

Davies needs to get the F out of Vancouver so he can get a real coach to teach him the game the right way.

Even it it will, it's kinda hard to be critical when we've been saying for years there should be more Canadians on Canadian MLS teams. Montreal is finally doing it, thumps up for trying!

ThiKu reacted to ted in Should the Canadian Premier League have a draft system like MLS in the future?
That is not at all what the draft system does.
The draft is a form of slavery that off-loads the development of players to the college system. Universities train players at their own cost while the teams collude to take their pick of players without having to pay any sort of fees.

"Late bloomers" or those who 'fall through the cracks' have no need of a draft. They can play for a variety of clubs or even school teams if they like. A draft doesn't discover them or even show them to scouts, it simply limits their options when they want to sign a pro contract. It is anti-competitive collusion by a cartel.

I recommend looking at Octavio's twitter account. Nothing on this decision yet, but total generosity about his colleagues and positive vibes always about Canadian soccer, in favour of TFC, young players emerging, Atiba. Including praise for Herdman in early November after he won those coaching awards.
I am smelling a stab in the back on the part of JH, sorry to say. I suspect it, have no confirmation, but just compare notes. JH wanted that job, and he got it. Here is what Octavio had to say about his colleague less than 2 months ago:
Octavio Zambrano V.@oz_football Congratulations to @coachherdman on his award, and for elevating @CanadaSoccerEN #CanWNT to the highest level. Best on the upcoming games.

Australia hasn't as anyone with a reasonable level of soccer knowledge who has ever actually watched the two leagues will soon testify and the obvious reason why a Canadian league is never likely to match the top American league in future is that we have a tenth of the population. It's a bit like expecting Scotland's league to match the English Premiership.

CSA doesn't rely on USSF coaching courses at all - that people choose to attend them is their decision. CSA offers all the necessary courses to coach in Canada.
