Canada Drops Opener 4-0 to Tigres

    Canada’s Asmir Begovic

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s U20 Men’s National team lost its opening match of the 13th Chivas Cup this morning in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Canucks gave up four second-half goals, three in just under 15 minutes, while squandering several excellent chances to slice into the Tigres lead.

While the score-line perhaps flattered the Mexicans, the Canucks could not take their opportunities when they presented themselves, and in the end paid the price.

Canada’s first real chance of the match fell to Nana Attakora-Gyan from a Canadian corner and Tigres up two-nil. The powerful Attakora-Gyan found himself unmarked just shy of the six-yard box but the defender’s header sailed over the bar.

Canada again had an opportunity to slice into Tigres’ advantage - this time with the score three goals to zero after the Canucks surrendered their first of two penalties - when Will Johnson created enough space to get a shot off from a very tight angle. The shot fooled the ‘keeper but ricocheted off the bar and was quickly scrambled away by the Tigres defense.

Minutes later, AJ Gray got the better of his marker on the right flank and swung a deep cross toward two unmarked Canadians at the far post. But both attackers had made early runs and could only watch as the cross sailed beyond them.

Then things got worse for Canada when Kyle Oliveira received his second yellow card and his marching orders. Oliveira will now miss the next game against Morelia.

Tigres converted their second penalty as time was expiring and with the match already out of reach.

Perhaps the comments from Canadian Assistant Nick Dasovic summed up the encounter best.

“A disappointing result”, said Dasovic. “We started the game off quite well but a lack of fitness and discipline forced five substitutions and resulted in losing four second half goals.

“We now have to get organized and prepared for another tough match tomorrow versus Morelia.”

Canadian defender Stephen Lumley will likely miss the next match. The pacy defender left at the half with a shoulder injury and is questionable for the Morelia game.

Canada has been grouped with Italian giants Inter Milan and four Mexican clubs – Tigres, Chivas, San Luis, and January 8th opponent Morelia.

The group winners (4 groups of 6 teams) will advance to the semi-final (January 13) with the tournament finale the following day.

  2. Well if he hasn't applied for Dutch citizenship then I'd say its a good chance he'll suit up for Canada. If he was really interested in playing for the Orange then I would think he would've or at least would be in the process of receiving citizenship so that he would be eligible ASAP. Instead now if he does get a call he'll have to go through the hassle of getting the paperwork done and he'll have to wait to play.
