Interesting snippet from this radio interview...
    https://www.tsn.ca/radio/vancouver-1040/dos-santos-want-players-committed-to-whitecaps-that-want-to-fight-for-this-club-1.1205961
When pressed a bit on who we can expect back next season, he dismisses that question and gives an example on a type of player. He says its important to acquire players that fit the philosophy of football that you have. So he says the since he wants to press up the pitch meaning they will have a high defensive line, he will need quick defenders that can cover the space behind them. I couldn't help but think that perhaps he was talking about Waston in that example.

Very good press conference indeed. Great impression of MDS already.  As for the Caps willing to spend on big dollar DPs, it seems evident to me that they are indeed prepared to do this, but they first want to see what Marc can do to clean up the existing roster mess, then carefully build an on field identity and bring in players who can play the style MDS wants, and THEN, once they've maximized resources intelligently, they will go out and get expensive DPs.  Mallet seems like a good guy, but he is not especially articulate. (MDS was far better.)  But if you listen to Mallet closely, you can figure out ownership's strategy. In essence, they are reluctant to throw money at an expensive DP when it is clear to them that they've not used their dollars wisely with the current squad. Guys like Brek Shea, for instance, are getting paid far too much for what they contribute.  First step: get your house in order. Second: evaluate your player-needs and fill the roster. Third: Assess performance and determine what is needed to put the team over the top (i.e. contend for MLS cup).
So, yes, it remains to be seen IF the Caps will ever sign a top tier DP, but what I heard from Mallet was far more encouraging--and strategically wise--than what some of us might have interpreted here.

    Let's do this!
Interesting to note that MDS speaks English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.
Now let's see if he can persuade Waston to stay. Having said that, maybe MDS won't bother with Waston. If your leader acts as he has since the firing of Robbo, then maybe you don't want that guy in your locker room. And, also, they might be able to get something significant for Waston in return.
Excited to see what MDS will do next, especially in terms of building his roster.

I am also excited but I get the impression that most of these young guys are still not ready for MLS, at least not as regular starters. But I do want to see MDS integrating guys like Baldisimo into the main squad, and then blooding them at the right moments.

I think we have to remember our guys have had very very little time playing together. They will need to figure things out as the tournament goes on, and fast.  If they can show they can adapt and improve, then we have reason to be optimistic.

I am also very excited. For me his development this year was one of the most exciting stories for the Nats, which is incredible considering Osorio’s performance, Davies’ performance and move to Bayern, Cavallini’s move and improved performance in Liga MX, and Tabla declaring for Canada. All massive stories, and all in one year. Love how MAK was playing for LAFC. This kid’s ceiling is even higher than I thought

As they say, a fish rots from the head down. The culture of any organization is the responsibility of the people in charge. I don’t know the inside of the ownership group, but they MUST first ask if they themselves are cultivating and nurturing a culture of success. If not, then they must make changes and those changes must then flow down to the front office and then the manager and then the players. Maybe removing Robbo is a reflection of the culture shift required, but I have a feeling there is rot higher up. Not sure it goes all the way to ownership, but it might

Dunno about you guys but I am personally really excited to have Kaye back in the fold. He likely will be competing for minutes against Piette, and I see Herdman using either depending on what the situation calls (Piette being more defensive minded and Kaye more attacking)

It would be a good move for Vancouver but from a national team perspective I think the more Canadian players on US teams the better. Let the Canadian teams fill their still minimal Canadian player quotas with young guys or guys needing a team not players who are good enough to get a contract and playing time elsewhere in the league and who do not need any help from the quota. Plus each player in the US gives us one more player to balance the many US players on our teams taking up unfair US quota spots.

Kaye's LAFC are eliminated tonight 3-2 at home by Real Salt Lake. Near the end of the game with it looking like an LA loss the announcers started talking about Kaye's injury being the key negative moment in LA's season and how he was the player LA was really missing in the game. Let's hope he can come back next year at the same level he was playing before his injury.

Watching the Whitecaps post season presser melt down reinforces for me the need for a strong team culture to help lead to the winning that we all want.

I am just rewatching the Portland game again, and it amazes me how many chances Davies creates. With better teammates he will be even more effective. He set up both Reyna and Tiebert for clear cut opportunities just in the first half. If it had been a Bayern player it would likely End in a goal.
Even at moments which don’t seem dangerous he will be better. There was several times he went for a give and go trying to break down the defence but his teammates couldn’t return the ball. I think he is better at breaking down a defensive side than people give him credit for, but he really doesn’t have any teammates to help him. His main teammates aren’t neat passers; they can make regular passes, but not quick offensive flowing movements.
That extra couple months to train with his teammates at Bayern will really help. I think we will see some brand new abilities come to the forefront at Bayern just because of playing with better players.

One great thing about having Dalrymple coach the senior team for a few games is that he got to really see up close what MLS is all about and he might tweek his academy training a bit as a result.  He also got to throw in some of his youngsters to see how they can hold themselves in with the big boys. Not a bad strategy if you are really hoping to produce some Homegrown talent.

I believe the Caps have been talking to MDS, but has anyone heard anything more than that?  I love the idea of bringing him to Vancouver, and the timing is perfect. Sad to see Waston go, but it seems that there'd be little anyone could do to win him back anyways.
But, yes, Waston and Reyna and Davies were, for different stretches of the season, the top three players all year.  If I had to give one guy player of the year for the Caps, it would be Waston.  Lots of rebuilding to do without him anchoring the backline, not to mention what they lose in terms of leadership.  To be fair, Kamara had a solid year too.
I don't have the stats, but doesn't it seem that the Caps went through more players during Robbo's time than most of the other MLS teams? Or is it just that I follow the Caps more closely?  It seems, too, they wasted cash and time on a fair number of "prospects" that simply did not pan out. I know that this happens with many football clubs, but there have been a lot of head scratchers.  Money has been a challenge, I know, but if you spend too much on the wrong guys, you sure as **** don't help matters.  Shea and Ghazal make far too much for what they contribute, for instance.  Kind of wish we'd kept Parker, even if he was asking for too much, especially in light of Waston's departure.
Bring on the new manager and let's start building--intelligently.
