  1. With the world expected to get hit with a nasty global recession, do you consider the $40-million US franchise fee extremely cruel??? Should MLS reconsidered their fee???? What do you think??? Do you actually think that the other bidders, aside from Vancouver who are expected not to pay probably, will actually pay this sum????
  2. EXPANSION: Miami Fusion Trademark Cancelled, Miami-FC Barcelona Club Nearly Certain Now Monday, December 1, 2008 Miami is a lock? Maybe, maybe not. With such definitive statements coming from some quarters we at MLSR decided to look for any evidence that there has been a decision made. Riddle us this for a moment... If you have gone through pains to keep a trademark alive many years after the team folded, perhaps in hopes of a return to the Miami market, then why would you suddenly cancel it when a major player like Barcelona is interested in joining the league in that market?
  3. Tuscan, being of an Hispanic background, I totally agree with you...This is complete nonsense that Garber is even granting franchise rights to this group...
  4. EXPANSION: Barca-Miami MLS Club Is 90% A Done Deal Says CEO Monday, December 1, 2008 It's clear that the Miami-Barca (Miami FCB) entry into MLS is going full speed ahead. Regardless of what side of the issue (and it is a controversial one) you come down on you may want to read the following excerpt from an article. Courtesy of Bloomberg: Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Barcelona, soccer’s third-richest team by sales, has a 90 percent chance of co-owning a Major League Soccer franchise in Miami, Chief Executive Officer Joan Oliver said. The 2006 European champion bid for one of tw
  5. But even at that Gianluca...What are the possibilities that 3 bids rather than 2 get ratified by the league office???
  6. Here's the latest rumor coming directly from MLS Rumors. If this rumor is accurate, then I would assume that MLS wants to retain some of the hot bids ------------------------------------------------------------------ Wednesday, November 26, 2008 EXPANSION: MLS Announcing More Than 2 Expansion Teams? This comes via email from a reader who saw it on SportsNet Canada. Here is an excerpt: "However, commissioner Don Garber did tell me something that changes everything. He admitted that announcing two teams for 2011 and two more for a later date all at the sam
  7. The last I heard of John Kelly as a member of the Voyageur messageboard was during summer 2001 under the old website...Wasn't this guy banned by the moderator of the old Voyageur messageboard for uttering threats to several members of the messageboard??? Anyway his story or allegation are not new, in particular with regard to the demise of the CUSL...We all knew that Pipe had a-lot to do with that...I've always been a true believer of the CUSL. I wish that the CSA and the provincial associations would implement its ideas in forming a semi-professional league under the umbrella of the pro
  8. Ok!!! Based on your assumption, can we determined that Joey is a dumbass who decided to play hardball with the bureaucrats of MLS and he eventually got burned big time???? Because of his miscalculated error (including his arrogance as well), Montreal soccer suffered a huge blow...The consequences still remain to be seen...
  9. Joey Saputo questioned whether the six other cities still in the bidding for 2011 — Ottawa, Vancouver, St. Louis, Miami, Atlanta and Portland, Ore. — are really ready to pay $40-million (U.S.). He said some did not include a fee in their bids. This is what caught my eyes...Do you think the other bidders have th ca$h up front...It remains to be seen...
  10. This is directly from MLS Rumors. What do you think? Should MLS have accepted the offer of $45 million Canadian ($36.5 million US by today's exchange rate) or was MLS right in refusing an expansion group which seemed to believe it could get in without upgrading its stadium to MLS standards? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, November 24, 2008 EXPANSION: Montreal Says, "Not At Any Price" It seems Montreal thought they could haggle with MLS over the expansion fee. That's according to what came out of today's press conference in Montreal a
  11. Guys, this is so fcuked-up that I'm now angry, sad and devastated. At point the finger at the narrow-minded bureaucrats of MLS.
  12. I personaly feel that there was a major conspiracy against Montreal by Garber... --------------------------------------------------------- Montreal out of MLS expansion bid Vancouver's was 'one of the best' bid presentations made to MLS board Marc Weber The Province Sunday, November 23, 2008 Vancouver Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi expressed disappointment Saturday over Montreal's elimination from the race for two Major League Soccer expansion franchises. This sentiment despite the popular notion that Montreal was a favourite among the seven cities vying for
  13. Guys, I will like to see Ben Knight and Gerry Gentile get involved into this debate. The problem here are twofold: 1) MLS is now rejecting more Canadian cities into the league for reason that the Canadian market takes away television ratings in the United States. These are Garber's words... 2) The CSA is now in trouble as a result of Kevan Pipe's miscalculation. I know that Pipe is now gone from the CSA, but let's remember it was Pipe who rejected the CUSL back 2001 for the option of MLS. According to Pipe at the time, he said himself that the future of professional soccer and the de
  14. Well at the rate things are going Canadian cities are not likely to join MLS until another 8 more years or more. This is NOT good for Canadian soccer. What other alternatives do you have????
  15. Mike, all I'm asking for now is for the CSA to review the idea. That's all...
  16. That's going to be a real tough one...I really don't know how TFC will sway in this decision...But one thing is certain is that the CSA will have to get off their ass and offer a serious solution to this problem...Let's not forget that the CSA abandoned the idea of the CUSL and opted to go down the route by adding more Canadian teams in the MLS. Now with Garber making the following statements about the Canadian market, this sets a huge blow to the CSA...The CSA was betting all this time on MLS to help them develop Canadian professional soccer. As far as I'm concern, the whole debate about prof
  17. After hearing the devastating news that the Montreal bid has been rejected and let's also not forget Garber saying the following statement in his address to the state of the league: "We don't have a lot of commercial businesses in Canada today," Garber said of league sponsorships. "The more teams we add there, the more it takes away out from growing our footprint and our television ratings in the United States." With this being said, is this the right time to promote a Canadian pro-league such as the CUSL???? Should the CSA and their provincial counterparts re-examine the whole idea

With this being said, is this the right time to promote a Canadian pro-league such as the CUSL???? 20. Even the Montreal media is getting the whole story wrong... --------------------------------- Montreal out of race for MLS team: Garber Saturday, November 22, 2008 Montreal Gazette Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber said on Friday that Montreal has rescinded its bid for an expansion franchise. He made the announcement during his annual state-of-the-union address before Sunday's MLS Cup final in Los Angeles. Montreal was one of seven cities bidding for two expansion franchises that are to join the league in 2011. "They're out for the next round of expansi
  21. From MLS Rumors REPORT: Montreal Expansion Group Accuses Don Garber of Lying About Bid Withrawl Things may previously have been testy between Montreal and MLS with Montreal boss, Joey Saputo going so far as to question the league's expansion fee on two previous occasions in 2007 and again earlier this year. According to this report things could get quite tasty after the final whistle Sunday.... Following MLS Commissioner Don Garber's statements regarding Montreal's bid, the Montreal partnership group would like to bring one important rectification: Montreal did not with
  22. This is what I'm afraid of that Montreal is a serious contender inside the USL, but the rest of the USL could collapse around them...So what's next for them...
  23. Here's the latest views on MLS expansion with Don Garber's question-and-answer interview with the New York Times:---------------------------------------------- Q: There has been much talk, and much written about the effect the economic downturn will have and is having on sports leagues. For M.L.S., it seems that the economic impact will be on your attempts to work with various municipalities to build new stadiums. You also have seven bids for two new teams that will start play in 2011, with fees set at $40 million per team. A: The economy will affect us as we look to do whatever we
  24. Guys, according to the gossip columns of BigSoccer.com, it appears that the USL Atlanta Silverbacks may have suspended operation as a result of the economy, and NOT because of MLS entry... http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=849523
