  1. League stability could be one thing. Knowledge of the playing level going in could be another. Better access to MLS scouting (aspiring to jump to that level someday soon) could be another.
  2. Awesome! That guy was one fantastic player. I mean, really fantastic.
  3. We could very well stick to our usual 4-5-1/4-3-3 alignment. I just thought it was worth noting that playing intra-squad games (as The Beaver noted above) might suggest otherwise. I'm not in a position to comment on deJong's suitability to play in a 3-back defense (or Hoilett's ability to cover defensively in his spot either) but do know that James played on the right in a 3-back defense a fair bit last year in Hungary. Cheers!
  4. Looking at the positions on the roster, I wonder if Herdman plans on using a 3-5-2 formation. 1st team: Larin - Cavallini Hoilett - Osorio - Davies Piette - Arfield deJong - Jakovic - James -- Borjan -- 2nd team: Millar - Jo. David Ricketts - Chapman - Akindele Teibert - Wotherspoon Cornelius - D. Henry - Brault -- Crepeau -- 3rd keeper: Busti
  5. Terrific roster. A bit surprised to see Ricketts and Akindele, given the talent load we have up front. Otherwise, I'm pretty impressed. Congrats to Crepeau and the kiddies.
  6. Offhand - Cornelius would probably be our top U-23 option. Henry and James would be our top prime-aged options. That would leave one spot for a veteran. Part of me would like to see how Vitoria is doing, now that he is starting again in Poland. He and Edgar are the two youngest of the vets and I would like to us build a group that will improve over the next year, rather than fade with age.
  7. 1. Borjan ... ... 2. S. Thomas (based on experience only; position tenuous) 3. Leutwiler (based on experience only; position tenuous) 4. Busti (rising fast) 5. Crepeau (rising but not as fast a Busti)
  8. I just checked and, according to Transfermarkt, James has played CB for Fredericia's first two league matches, so maybe his DM days are behind him. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/manjrekar-james/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/222686/saison/2018/wettbewerb/DK2/verein/5776
  9. Personally, I'm on board with Henry being a starting CB for us in the Fall. The trick to me is finding a partner that will compliment his skills and cover for his weaknesses. Unfortunately, I have no idea who that could be.
  10. That, he was. Great of you to point that out. Cheers!
  11. Like jpg75, I too have read in the past (on this forum) that Canadians do not count as foreigners in Germany. Since we seem to always have a fair bit of players in B3 and I had no way to dispute it, I just assumed that this was true. Grizzly's, Cheeta's and Shakmur's clarifications are interesting. In any case, Germany does seem to be a welcoming place for our players and I am more than happy about that, regardless of how that can come about - and thrilled that Davies is going there. Now if we could only get a few other players to make the jump to B2...
  12. I just looked it up. Transfermarkt have him moving on a free transfer on July 19th. Hopfully, he can be the starter from here on out. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/simon-thomas/profil/spieler/103630
  13. The Globe and TSN are both posting a Canadian Press report that Altidore could return for this weekend's Chicago match. That would be great for the team but not so great for Jordan Hamilton's playing time, moving forward. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/soccer/article-toronto-fc-star-jozy-altidore-could-return-in-chicago-this-weekend/ https://www.tsn.ca/tfc-star-altidore-could-return-in-chicago-this-weekend-1.1144159
  14. Hey folks. There are an increasing amount of side-discussions appearing in individual threads, about the state of our CB's, that I figured it was worth having a dedicated topic added. I know there was an old one which is buried somewhere (that I wanted to bump) but the search function is haywire for me today. Anyway - by my calculations (which could always have errors), the players available are getting regular season minutes as follows: Last Winter Leagues: 1. Straith = 2865 mins (German B3) 2. M. James = 2260 mins (Hungary, some of which were at DM) 3.. Cornelius = 1855 mins (Serbia) 4. Stanese = 1839 mins (German B3, some - maybe most - of which were at DM) 5. Gasparotto = 1197 mins (Scotland 2nd tier, currently unattached) 6. Vitoria = 1182 mins (Poland) 7. Hainault = 1074 mins (German B3, most were at end of season, after a long injury) Current Summer League Season: 1. M. Kapor = 1041 mins (Belarus) 2. Jakovic = 603 mins (MLS, most of which were early in season) 3. D. Henry = 540 mins (MLS, current run of starts, after an early season loan to Ottawa) Unattached: 1. David Edgar (presumably looking for work in Europe, after short contract in USL) 2. Luca Gasparotto EDIT: M. Kapor added, per Bison44's post below. Note that I didn't list any of the USL players, since they are too numerous and the level overall is a bit low for current CMNT consideration, although it is great that some have suggested a few top candidates to watch below. Cheers!
  15. Neither of these players strike me as "leader" or "captain" material but I do agree with you that they need to step up as key contributors to the program going forward. Both are very talented players, heading into their prime years, seemingly well suited to playing in Latin America, which is something that we struggle with so much.
  16. Awesome! Personally, I hope he stays at Ottawa until he can eventually find a starting gig at a higher level. I think he is too young to sit as a backup in Montreal next season.
  17. But I still can't get "Edson" out of my head. ?
  18. A sad but inevitable ending. The main positive is that Division-2 soccer will likely become a more stable environment (especially for the players). Are Mason Trafford and Drew Beckie the only Canadians impacted by this?
  19. I just hope that Tabla remembers and appreciates that it was his time in Canada that give him the opportunity that he got from Barca.
  20. I do agree that it would be great to have a separate USL forum (or merge it into a combined NASL-USL forum). No need to close the NASL one though. Despite looking bleak, NASL is still a going concern, that will undoubtedly have ongoing news and discussions over the upcoming weeks/months. Cheers!
  21. So, Indy have officially joined USL - leaving only four existing franchises (NY Cosmos, Miami, Jacksonville & Puerto Rico) and two new/expansion teams from California left standing. http://www.uslsoccer.com/news_article/show/874263?referrer_id=2333971
  22. I really don't think NASL is going to last until August anyway. From what I can tell, USL are pushing hard to get Indy and Jacksonville to jump ship (or get a new USL team in Jax) - leaving Miami and NY Cosmos essentially on their own (with Puerto Rico and two expansion teams from California).
  23. Offhand, my two thoughts are: 1) I am saddened that we are losing someone who had an understanding of what we are dealing with, playing in Latin America. Hopefully, Herdman will make it a priority to include assistants/consultants to help us on that front. 2) I hope that Findlay is kept on board - both to add some continuity and for the positive contributions that he seems to have made to the program so far.
