Canadian soccer fans will always be able to prove Henry is not dependable by waiting for one mistake and ignoring the rest of the man's play.

While discussions regarding COVID-19 can be on topic in this thread when relating to the logistics of playing qualifying matches, the last 15 or so posts (that I have deleted) devolved into a debate about the illness itself and personal attacks. Please stay on topic in here.

Interesting. Not very long ago, a player of his pedigree and level would be a shoo-in starter for our full NT. Now, despite starting for a top flight Scottish club, he is hoping to make our Olympic team!

    Jonathan David

Jonathan David is trending on twitter. No shortage of mainstream Canadian sports fans downright confused. Asking questions like "what is Gent and Lille?" and "what sport is this?"

If this goes through as expected, David becomes the record transfer for a Canadian international and for a Belgian pro league player, right? Edit: Would also be a club-record signing for Lille.

    Cyle Larin

Larin isn't in their plans, but two 29 year olds might be? Another case of Turkish football paying for older players at the end of their prime while getting rid of anyone who can still grow. This actually says more about Beşiktas than Larin. Turkey is Europe's retirement league and has been for years. I hope Larin gets out of there and finds a team willing to let him play.

I think people need to pump the brakes on the Doneil hating. He's a solid player, definitely making a CMNT roster any day of the week. He's not perfect but has a lot to offer and always seems to come with the right attitude. Was one of my favorites when he was with the Caps

He'll force one onto the bench. 😉 I was reading somewhere that in the next two years, if Canada gets to the Octo, we'll be playing between 23-27 meaningful games, including the Gold Cup. We'll need all of our midfielders to be able to slot in and out at times, and depending on club fixtures we may not have certain players. Kaye will probably start some games, and not others. I think he is definitely a good choice as a starter, but I also think that what I've seen of Eustaqio over the last while means he could also start. Personally, the fact that we can name seven or eight midfielders as potential starters over the next two years gives me a lot of confidence that Canada can get to Qatar. We have depth.

So, I see on the program guide that Optus Sport, the local rights holder, is replaying the CL group stage match between Spurs and Bayern in London. The match was played at the start of October. I put it on just before halftime and Davies is nowhere to be seen. Can you imagine a big game now where Bayern leave the Phonz on the bench? Let us never forget how meteoric his rise has been over the last 10 months.

@admin - do you know if it would be possible to get something promoting the V’s into the grounds? It wouldn’t be for any profit, and would not be favouring any team so maybe they would allow it...? . A banner hung in the playing area would be a cool addition. I am reaching out to the PEI Soccer Association (who are liaising with CPL) to see who I would ask if it is even possible.

Just an update based on some internet work His team has started this SPL season well, winning 2 from 2. He started in both. Went 65' the first game and 79' in the second. Going just by highlights, it looks like he was starting with some license to get forward and then either pulled back or replaced when they were trying to protect a lead. He drew the winning penalty in the first game with a decent run and okay header in the box and should have had an assist in the second game if his teammate finished better. Look for #24 in these. Also a local Scottish paper piece about him want to play in the Olympics for us written between the two games. https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/sport/football/ross-county/2392588/harry-paton-hopes-ross-county-form-keeps-him-on-radar-for-canada-olympics-spot/

Piette is a solid CMNT player. For what he is usually asked to do he is tremendous and deserves a great deal of appreciation for his efforts and commitment. Don’t think he is overrated. But he does not have the skill set of Eustaquio and I would think that for most important games in the future, Eustaquio will be the starter at the DM position and Piette will come off the bench if needed in the destroyer role to finish out the game.

Can you imagine what it must be like for a 19-year old kid who'd always dreamed of playing football against the best teams in the world to know he is playing Barca in less than a week?! The fact that Davies is keeping his head through all of this--this entire year, all the media, big games, legendary footballers singing his praises etc.--is a testament to his character, his upbringing, and the good people around him these past many years. While his Edmonton clubs and the Caps deserve kudos, one has to give a special nod to the class and intelligence of the Bayern organization for how they've helped Davies this past year-and-a-half. Oh, and toss in a new language, a new culture and a global pandemic. Looking forward to the match vs. Barca.

Yeah but 18 games into the season, the first post about his play is "look he fell and it led to a goal". How long does a guy have to play relatively mistake free (no red cards/penalties etc) before people start to ease up? Other than Jakovic we dont have anyone playing regularly, not James, Cornelius, Vittoria Miller, so they dont have opportunities to make any mistakes/goofs.

I think this becomes more debatable as time goes on. Arfield is starting less often with Rangers now. The flip side of being a veteran is that you eventually begin to slow down (unless your name is Atiba, apparently..)

    The Importance of Alphonso Davies

If you don't rate Sane, I'll have to say that you don't watch him much or footy in general. Because Sane is nastyyyy, and right now he's in the top 5 for best LW. Can Phonzie be better? 1000% given the consistent opportunity at the position - they have the same skillsets. But right now you're literally comparing a LB to a LW. A LW who's been playing at the highest levels since he was the same age as Phonzie is now. We all love Davies...let's just not overdue the bias.

I truly believe this. Even at this point in his career, he still would benefit from playing alongside a steady "quarterback" type of guy leading the back line. I thought he did well with the Whitecaps (the fact that he and his back line partners and Crepeau had to face a shooting gallery too often had far more to do with the ineffective defensive midfield play in front of them), and he was able to leverage that into a move abroad, which I also believe is a good move (different, wider range of experiences on and off the pitch). Against the Galaxy recently I watched Jakovic give away a penalty on a late, awkward challenge and then later get skinned by Pavon on his goal which was called back for offside, and there was no discussion about it but if Henry did the same we would be having a handwringing fest on here. On the other hand, even last season there were times where I watch him dive in to block or challenge and I would close my eyes and hope that the ball didn't play off his arm or he didn't clip his opponent. When he makes a mistake (which happens, even to guys like Van Dijk on occasion) he needs to have a short memory, Donnie Brasco "fugget about it," and get re-focussed on the game, and not have that error daisy chain into more mistakes (which I have also seen happen with him). His physical talents are excellent, even after fairly serious health issues, but to get the best out of him, he needs to play alongside that back line leader. For me, he's our starter at RCB.

    The Importance of Alphonso Davies

It was a very mature, rather than typically swashbuckling, performance from the Phonz. It was very appropriate for a full-back for a team carrying a 3-goal first leg lead into the match. It bodes well for his mindset going into a game where he'll be marking Messi, Suarez, and Griezmann at various times throughout. The real question right now, though, is whether @Unnamed Trialist is with Canada, as embodied by Alphonso Davies, or with FC Barca? 🤔 😁

I like Henry and have no qualms about him being called up. I think people here exacerbate his mistakes because if he could minimize or eliminate them the sky would be the limit. If he was a bit healthier and mitigated mistakes, he may have stuck at West Ham. There's a reason they bought him. Unfortunately it didn't work out, but all things considered I think Henry is one of our best CBs. Great to see him starting at a good level in the K League 1.

    Tristan Borges

OH Leuven lose 4-1 to Beerschot and 5-1 on aggregate in a series that means little since they both go up. Borges did not make the bench and I haven't seen his name pop up at all in their friendlies leading up to this. Not sure if he is injured or just having a tough time breaking into the 18. Hoping he puts his head dowb and keeps working hard and manages to impress enough to win some minutes in the top flight next year.
