Has anyone had worse luck at scoring? Had one called back for a questionable offside. Got stoned 3 times against Nashville. He just needs to be more consistent. He has a Dempsey-like "tries s***" quality.

    CPL new teams speculation

Straight from the mouth of former TVA Sports journalist Nicholas Martineau and current co-founder of Obelisq agency. -European clubs have a better perception of CPL than USL due to the "Division 1" Status. MLS Next will seek Division 3 sanction at the USSF. So, I don't buy that MLS Next will be more attractive than CPL one bit

Canadian Premier League expansion - Bundesliga involved in Fraser Valley project? there is also talk about expansion in British Columbia. One location that has been targeted by the league is Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Regional District. Putting a second team in BC, in general, and a team in close proximity to Vancouver, in particular, is a major priority for when the league expands next. That team could see major financing from the German Bundesliga. https://www.transfermarkt.us/canadian-premier-league-expansion-bundesliga-involved-in-fraser-valley-project-/view/news/373100

I hate to always be the guy....but how Millar can be considered that high up when he's not playing professional games at all this year. Does this mean Corbeanu has worked his way into the depth from playing and performing with the U23's at Wolves? For me Tajon has surpassed those guys in the "depth chart" - because you know, he's playing consistently, performing and showing great potential.

Yup 2 goals so far this year. Seems he is developing nicely. He will be a great addition to the U-23 team. I would be surprised if he never earned a senior cap next year. He has arguably overtaken Tabla in the depth chart now. Should be challenging Millar now when things resume internationally.

Barring injury or suspension, I sense that the newly signed Veselinovic and Godoy will be the CB partnership for this final stretch run and to begin next season.

It would be interesting to understand the football ecosystem. Canada certainly has many things going for it, but on the player development front you'd think a club like Atletico should be buying Defensor Sporting or Danubio, not Ottawa. Maybe they (or a competitor) already has behind the scenes, but how much could a Uruguay top flight club really cost. One Gimenez and you have an $80m asset on the books. The fact that these small clubs produce players like this consistently makes me wonder why they aren't all owned by foreign money? Perhaps because it's easy enough to buy the players young and on the cheap? (I think Gimenez was about 900k).

    The Importance of Alphonso Davies

These guys think that Davies might still start tomorrow (check out the sub-headline by the way): https://www.bavarianfootballworks.com/2020/10/20/21524691/bayern-munich-vs-atletico-madrid-champions-league-lineups-team-news-alphonso-davies-muller-gnabry If he doesn't start tomorrow and presumably he will on the weekend. I can't see that, with Flick indicating that Davies needs a physical and mental break (in another article from that same website) that he would start both - it's more likely that he will start neither than starting both but I suspect there will be some squad rotation. Still, I give it about 34 minutes from this post before we see the first "Dest is the top left back in Concacaf" from some American fans after he went 90 for Barcelona today in their CCL match against the Hungarian champs while news of "Davies form has dropped" starts to spread. And while I'm here talking about CCL, I wasn't aware that PSG now had Verratti, Keane and Florenzi. Heck, they have more Italian players now than some of the bigger Italian clubs regularly start.

    The Importance of Alphonso Davies

Yeah I get the sense this is partly Flick giving Hernandez a run in the team. Like you say, he is an expensive player, but also one in good form at the moment. I think I saw he was man of the match when France played Portugal over the international break? I was just on one of the Bayern forms and some of them are pointing out that Davies hasn't been good, but they are in his corner, citing his age and the number of games he has played. Apparently Davies played the 7th most minutes for Bayern last season (+3700 min). A lot of them seem to want Davies at LB and Hernandez at CB for what it is worth, but I think they are soured at the fact Alaba wants a salary bump or wants out, this at a time where his form has been questionable. I don't blame Flick for keeping him in the side though. You want a player to stay you don't bench him. It is convenient for Flick that Hernandez is in form and Davies is out of form and in need of a reset, physically and mentally.

If I were a club I'd think that the best bet is not to have a team in CPL, it would be to sponsor a major aspect, like the league's academies. Or to be a partner. Or the main sponsor. The FC Bayern Canadian Premier League. Or the Bayern Munich CPL Academies. That way the entire league looks upon you favourably for what you are adding to the project. A major European team taking on a single club in the league ends up being the rival of the others and the rest of the fans learn to dislike or despise their uppity connections, as happens with NY Red Bull, and even NYCFC. I am not sure a club benefits your image, I seriously doubt NY Red Bull is even an effective use of branding for their US sales. Okay, not entirely sure on this, as likely At Ottawa has already given At Madrid greater Canadian brand recognition, but that is before they've hardly played. When rivalries flourish that may change. It may top out as the team becomes just another rival to beat for 7/8ths of CPL fans. Would a Werder Fraser Valley FC benefit them? At first, possibly; then not so sure. The advantage of a Werder or an Atlético is that they have a low fan base, but are not generally disliked by fans; so they may grow, but also grow in negative ratings too. And then the same way At Ottawa is not clearly connected enough to the home club to really feed talent that way (despite Coupland getting his hopes up), you are not necessarily going to see younger players going any more to your Werder Bremens, if that were the case. Final thought: why would a German football entity have more pull getting a municipality alongside to build a 8000 seater stadium in the Fraser Valley when no local interest can get anywhere close?

    Canadian Wonder kids

I keep hearing comments like this. I'm not saying it's untrue, but does anyone have sources? I have seen JMR play exactly one match (u15 USDA Playoff finals vs LAFC) and he looked good, but not like he was a league above everyone else. I'm not trying to bring the kid down, but to me the term 'wonderkid' means a 100% can't miss prospect, and in my estimation the only wonderkid that Canada has ever produced is Alphonso Davies.

I think that is fair. For me Millar is that high up the depth chart by virtue of his 8 caps. Others may not factor that in, which is fine. Tajon is playing at a level higher than Premier League 2, but his output is similar to what Millar's was at Kilmonarck. All that considered, along with what I see with my own eyes, Tajon should be challenging Millar for his spot on the team.

He would need some friendlies/camps with his national team teammates before he can be considered ahead of players like Millar or Tabla IMO. I know he was named to the Olympic squad provisional roster before Covid delayed that, but has he ever played with any of our national teams yet? National team selection for matches that count isn't all about skill, there also has to be some familiarity and chemistry with the team & the coaches and system played. He (along with Johnston & St. Clair) must be called to whatever our next camps/friendlies will be for that purpose (assuming that it's not in Europe when the MLS season on).

I like that comparison. Also funny that it was Bruce Arena who said that about Dempsey. Would be curious to know his thoughts on the comparison. For me he has to be #3 on our winger depth chart behind Davies and Hoilett for now. Millar is by all accounts doing well for Liverpool u23s and can hopefully get a loan but if we were to play tomorrow I'm going with Tajon off the bench.

    2020-2021 CONCACAF League

Forge's game is on Thursday, but the competition kicks off tonight. I was just looking up some info and found that the match of interest to me tonight is Verdes (Belize) vs Arcahaie (Haiti). Belize's spot is only half a point ahead of Canada's in the Club Index, so they are well within range for us to pass them if Forge gets a result on Thursday. The other interesting thing of note is that Belize teams have lost 11 straight matches in CONCACAF League/CCL. Their last win came in 2015 in the CCL group stage, which was also the last time Verdes were the Belize representatives!

    CPL new teams speculation

Unless they're going to be playing first-team MLS minutes, a young player is better off in CanPL. In a quarter century, MLS teams have proven to be an impediment to standout players moving on to better leagues, something that CanPL clubs have already shown that they won't be. MLS is making noises that they'd like to change their approach in this area, but I'd want to wait a few years to see if they're truly genuine about that. That being said, for a player who's realistic ceiling is MLS-level, going straight into that league is probably a better idea.

    CPL new teams speculation

I don't think European clubs would look at a player and say "he's in MLS Next". I think they'd say "he's in MLS". Ultimately, I think the important thing for players is having options. MLS and MLS Next will work for some. The CPL will help gather players missed/overlooked/rejected by MLS and/or need more time. At the incredibly low wages offered by the CPL, I don't buy that it's more attractive necessarily. They're just two different paths now and we're fortunate to have good access to both.

Which is true. Right now, Chase Claypool is having an outstanding start to his rookie NFL season in Pittsburgh. If he keeps this up, he's in the running big time, perhaps more so if he was a GTA guy instead of a Fraser Valley one, but still a serious contender.

    CPL new teams speculation

Coupland just stated that in an article: “I think it’s also about representing the stripes and representing Atlético Madrid,” Coupland said, signaling to the Atlético logo on his team jacket during an interview with the Sportspage over Zoom. “They have unique values and a unique way of thinking,” Coupland said. “Every time I step on the field, I’m very proud to say that I’m playing for Atlético Ottawa, a team affiliated with Atlético Madrid. That’s a really strong feeling for me.” “I’m 16, there’s youth teams until U19 (at Atlético Madrid). Having that opportunity to potentially go play over in Madrid with the academy is something that is achievable and if I work towards it, it’s definitely somewhere that I could see myself playing in the future,” Coupland said. https://sportsottawa.com/2020/10/14/teenage-midfielder-antoine-coupland-reflects-on-his-first-season-with-atletico-ottawa/

    Liam Fraser

I agree with this take. A lot of blame on TFC & Vanney. I know no one wants to hear this but maybe Fraser is not as good as we all think despite his fantastic game vs USA a year ago. A lot of hate on Toronto for players leaving the academy and club and going on to better things. It's going to happen occasionally. But here is a look at the Canadian TFC players who have left the club for greener pastures in recent years (We can assume that for the most part all the MLS teams listed below are of lower quality than Toronto): Ashtone Morgan is yet to play a minute for a much lesser quality Real Salt Lake. Jordan Hamilton is yet to play a minute for a lesser quality Columbus Crew. Chapman went from 522 minutes, 2 G 2 A with Toronto last year to a much lesser quality Inter Miami playing 222 minutes currently. Raheem Edwards has yet to solidify a spot since leaving Toronto, playing for 3 teams in a 4 years. He went from 1 G and 6 A in 1058 minutes for TFC as a teenager to only 4 G & 5 A in the next 4 seasons combined and never reaching the 1,000 minute mark. Although not from the academy and a brief stint in Lithuania, Tosaint Ricketts has less minutes than Liam Fraser with a much lesser quality Vancouver squad this season. Again, not an academy product and obviously off field issues but Will Johnson isn't even playing this season. I'm not saying Fraser is in the same category. I rate him higher than those players above and I think it's clear he is not in Vanney's long term plans so I think he should start looking elsewhere. But this above just shows that leaving Toronto FC doesn't always work out for the better. This doesn't mean I want to see Vanney play players like Endoh & Mullins over over young Canadians because I don't want that at all. If anything this is Vanney's biggest problem. I firmly believe that young Canadians should be getting more minutes for players like Mullins, Endoh etc. I just think the Toronto hate on here is always too harsh, but I'm sure people will still find a way to blame Toronto FC for the lack of success of the Canadian players after leaving the club.

    Jonathan David

I’ve watched every minute of every Lille game this season and although they have been frustrating to watch as a team (albeit their success), today they were great. Agreed that Jo, for the entirety of the season has looked a bit slow, out of sync, low confidence and so far, not up to this level. It’s been hard to make excuses for him. He is playing a very difficult position on a team like this. It may just be what we just end up seeing with his time at Lille (very little of the ball and back to goal). Id imagine they pictured David to be a great poacher and lethal finisher. So far he looks nothing like that (hurts to say it) but are fingers are still crossed that things change and we’ll support him all the way through.

    Stephen Eustaquio

Time for weekly Eustaquio gushing: He stayed further back today so play didn't flow through him as much as usual. What was interesting, is that his tackling/aerial duels seem like they've really improved, the few chances he's had to show it. He's not very big, and tackling has never been his strength, so it seems like he's been working on it. Eustaquio's already incredibly well-rounded in possession, so if he can add that to his game, he could be really scary.

    1812 FC Barrie: Super Thread

I have never lived in Barrie but have played a bunch of soccer in the area. I'd imagine someone actually living there would give a better response but I would think they would be focusing on the Simcoe region more than anything. The cut-off between Barrie and York would likely be around Newmarket, which I think is as far as York has really focused anyway as I know they have some sort of relationship with Aurora which is just south of Newmarket. The main market for Barrie would be Barrie itself with some larger towns in the area that they could draw from such as Orillia, Innisfil, Bradford. Could probably draw some from towns just outside like Alliston, and people living in cottage country towns like Bracebridge could maybe be tempted down as well. All in all I'd say the population of their area is somewhere between 300,000-400,000
