    November friendlies

Posted this in the Arfield thread, but Scotty mentioned that Herdman will be announcing a squad in the next two weeks. So, it sounds like a friendly is in the works: https://www.rangersnews.uk/international/rangers-star-scott-arfield-gives-update-on-canada-future-amid-uncertainty/

I don’t agree.I don’t think it’s Jonny fault he gets Zero service... It wasn’t the best penalty it he was the one that earned it and it takes I lot to step up and take the pen when you confidence is low. I’m shocked at how poor Lille’s defence is and ffs why won’t the mids play the ball info Jonny feet or in behind. They look right at him and lose the ball. The m shocked at how bad they are playing Celtic haven’t won in 3 games. Lille overplay the ball... and teams will figure them out soon.. jonny is a great player and an even better kid. Liam calls him the ice man he will work through it. And come out a better player

Anybody who posts here in good faith and cheers for the Nats is a V in my view. You don't have to been to a match or sit in the supporters section to qualify - after all, it's not like we are the US who play a ton of home games and wisely spread their home games around, there are a lot of fans who don't have the opportunity to attend a live Canada match. Canada (the men at least) hasn't played in Atlantic Canada since what.... 1985? I bet half of you kids reading this weren't even born at that time.

    Scott Arfield

Arfield clarified this past weekend that he has not retired from international football. Scotty said that he has spoken with Herdman many times since the last camp in November 2019. Also said that Herdman will be announcing a squad in the next 2 weeks, so perhaps there is a friendly on the horizon: https://www.rangersnews.uk/international/rangers-star-scott-arfield-gives-update-on-canada-future-amid-uncertainty/

It's still a garbage move and for a coach to do that is an indictment against the coach, first and foremost. If you think he is your guy, then he goes on. If things don't work out, first of all, it is not all on him, a whole team is playing. The goals against are not even on his side of the pitch. And secondly, taking him out with a few minutes left proves nothing except you are not in control of your coaching decisions. It's low. For me, instead of saying Ballou is done, I'd say Henry is done.

His coach at FC Barcelona B, García Pimenta, was happy with him, and played him. He was never benched. And he was disciplined and played well, nothing spectacular, but fans liked him and appreciated him,. There were no complaints about behaviour, nor attitude. He took a bad loan deal and did not play, but was never ostracized by FCB. So instead of drawing conclusions selectively, include all the data. Don't be a bunch of shiiits. He's clearly a kid who has some confidence problems, and perhaps some anxiety; he has talent but lacks mentality to make it work effectively on the pitch. But taking a player out just after subbing him in is ethically deplorable. I am surprised that so many fans on this board do not understand this. It is dirty, and someone boasting about doing it to a youth player, well that really bothers me. If you are a youth coach, you act like an adult, take responsibility for your decisions, let a player discover what he can do and do not require him to strictly "follow instructions" as if he was doing a worksite safety protocol. For anyone here coaching youth, be clear about this: don't take out your defects on a kid who is there to learn. As for pros, it is simple, from day one. If you don't like the way he plays, don't play him. And if you don't like how he trains, then don't call him into your gameday roster. And if you don't think he has anything to offer your club, look at his contract and see if someone else will take it on, buying the player or taking him on loan so he's out of sight. That is the clearest and most honest message. Anything else is a serious lack of character on your part as a coach.

They hired a name and gambled. Henry is still very unproven as a manager and MLS has been the undoing of other managers with pedigree like Garde and de Boer in recent years. That said all three were coming in on a downward trajectory hoping to rescue their careers. Henry came after bombing in his first managerial job. It was still a calculated hire and I don't blame Montreal. Before covid the crowd would have been well behind the team which would have helped. Unlike the previously mentioned, Henry at least played in the league and should have garnered a bit of understanding of how the league works. The substitution is a simple, albeit brutal message. Follow instructions and do the job you were asked. I fear he is making a bit of an example of Tabla but at the same time this is obviously what he wants Ballou to add to his game. Whether this approach will work with Ballou remains to be seen. For me, he seems like he would benefit more from the arm around the shoulder manager that can wrap him in cotton wool. But maybe that is how we got here with him though. Either way it's still up to Ballou to sort himself out. Change your game with what one of the greatest attacking players in the history of the game is telling you or spin the wheel and see if anyone else will take the gamble. In that case it is likely down before he has a chance of getting back up. I hope he takes his medicine and does what he is asked, I don't see what he has to lose in trying because right now he is throwing away his career.

Henry should make Ballou watch Jaeden Nelson’s sub appearance for the last 10 minutes of TFC’s game tonight. He didn’t change the result for them but it wasn’t due to a lack of effort. That is what fresh legs should look like in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Watched him again last night and he was pretty solid - he’s a very good passer with nice vision. He’s only 20 too. Will be interesting to see how he develops. he’s by far the best passer in Vancouver’s squad.

So they need to find a mystical league in Europe, that has the highest quality players and will play kids with no experience from outside their program....when their own MLS club wont play them in MLS. But a league right in Canada, with some recent MLS players on almost every team, that has a mandate to play young CDNs isnt a reasonable transition??

That was something amazing. I never thought that i would see the day that i would see or experience something like that in Canada. For that two leg tie, there were a total of a hundred thousand people who paid and came out to watch that (65k at the big Owe and 36k at BMO). Both were advanced sellouts. Lets think about that for moment. But even more importantly, even though i was only at the game at BMO, you could not spot anybody who were sitting on their hands. If you go back and watch the highlights of both games, listen to the background and atmosphere at both venues, you’ll never see that kind of charged atmosphere for a sporting event in canada.

Toronto FC Fraser looked good but not great. Laryea probably wasn't his best performance. Shaffelburg looked way off altogether. Priso looked decent minus a few poor giveaways. Nelson I thought looked very good and lively. Also loved that both Priso and Nelson go hard into tackles. They both work very hard getting back on defense as well. One thing I've noticed in the last couple games is just how important Osorio is to Toronto's midfield. And they are definitely missing a presence like Akinola up top.

It’s not a reserve squad. It is a 95% u23 league (tbh mostly made up of 18/19/20 year olds) Each team can have up to three (I think) overage players(not including the GK(who can be over age as well. The clubs use it to bring first team players back from injury too to get match fit. Hence why players like that and Danny Drinkwater play... Currently at the top end there are two divisions of PL2 run by the Premier league Div 1 and 2 with promotion and relegation each season https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020–21_Professional_U23_Development_League Each club has to be Cat 1 EPPP academy the EFL run a separate league called the PDL with category 2 clubs https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_Development_League Wolves currently play in the 2nd division of the PL2 sorry for the long post just FYI...

I highly recommend Twitter for keeping up to date on Canadian soccer news. Follow @Canucks_Abroad, @Division1A and @CanPLBrasil and you'll get inundated with news, quality highlights and analysis of Canadian players. The MLS teams, CanPL teams and @SigmaFC are good follows too imo. As is @onesoccer. Just because you're on twitter that doesn't mean that you need to post what you ate for lunch or get mired in the political discussion hellscape that also exists there.

To me it was the same as any gifted player-turned-manager. When they played everything came naturally to them so they don't understand why some things aren't natural to others. Its hard to do in-game, but there's no "teaching" there.

Interesting (and not very encouraging) article that talks about Tabla in the context of a preview for tonight’s game: https://www.985fm.ca/nouvelles/sports/342920/un-autre-match-de-six-points-pour-l-impact ——— Je ne parle pas, so I had to use google translate but the picture it paints isn’t good: “On Monday, no questions could be asked about the Ballou case, nor the NYCFC player who contracted COVID-19, or even the transfer window which closed on Thursday. Several journalists who wished to ask questions on these subjects were refused the right to speak. Where is Ballou going? Since we have just touched on the subject, the Jean-Yves Ballou Tabla dossier continues to generate ink. In the very last game, the young Impact midfielder was kicked out of the game by the coach, just minutes after entering. A real slap in the face of the young Quebecer. It was not the first time that Henry has expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of the talented player. Remember that at the end of last season he was sidelined by coach Wilmer Cabrera after being late for training. Ballou then had to do his mea-culpa publicly. Not to mention that the previous coach Rémi Garde had also had a problem with Ballou, and this, from his very first game under his command. And let’s not forget that Mauro Biello was also telling us lip service that Ballou had to learn to become a "real professional". He was still young at the time, and everyone was willing to give him time to mature. But we have to admit that several years later, Ballou has not changed and his career is stagnant. At one point, four coaches can't all be wrong. Ballou has to seriously look at himself in the mirror, and decide what he wants to do with his career. He still has a year of contract with the Impact, the club also has an option year on his contract for 2022.” ouch

Karifa Yao is another one who has a chance to quickly climb this list. Makes the bench every game for Montreal. Didn't look bad in his 1 start this year. 6'2" and just turned 20 a couple weeks ago. If he can push his way into the starting lineup up next season that would be huge for us. He is probably at somewhat the same level as Dunn in that they both need to start getting some playing time.
