    The Importance of Alphonso Davies

Whoscored rated him as the top player for Bayern against Gladbach. He's had one of the best ratings for the team (top 3) in most of his starts this year. His seasonal rating of 7.36 is currently third best for Bayern. I always take these types of analyses with a grain of salt but it should be noted that as a teenager, playing out of position, he's ranked as one of the best players on one of the best teams in the world!

    Stephen Eustaquio

Why would he be in MLS for just one season? He will most likely be offered the standard 2 years + 2 club option years. They will lock him in at a low $ contract since he has few offers at the moment due to his injury. And when he does well and attracts reasonable but not amazing offers, they won't sell him. MLS will be a prison sentence for Eustaquio. I hope he has other options.

Ugh, the last place I want to see Eustaquio is MLS. I hate how the league treats young non dp players.

    CPL new teams speculation

I think I can guess what he will say about expansion. 1. Lots of interested parties 2. At various different levels of progress 3. Stadiums are the biggest stumbling block. And maybe he makes some comment about hoping to announce something "soon" or "early next year" or he might even say "within 30 days". But like I said before, until there is a countdown on canpl.ca, those vague promises won't convince me

Just like Cavallini, I hope it's just a pit stop on the way up. Better Montreal than Orlando. He'll get some Champions League at least for a few games. Hope he is in MLS for 1 season max. Same goes for Cavallini. I was really liking that we had Liga Mx representation. Sad to see that replaced with MLS. We have enough players in MLS already.

Europa League and the other Champions League game update. Good news first. - Rangers and Arfield survive a late red and a late goal to draw, taking second in their group. - Gent, sadly without David, win. They had qualified but now top their group. The bad - Atibba's Besiktas were already eliminated. - In the Champions League, Borjan's Red Star had a chance to take third and claim a place in that same Europa League by avoiding defeat. He played quite well but his defender gave away a very stupid penalty near the end, which he had no chance on. Gent and Rangers are in the draw Monday for the February round of 32, one seeded, one not, so could face each other.

This is interesting, considering Pacos don't have money lol. At best they're able to spend maybe around 100k and rely on free agents. I'm shocked how Cruz have such little interest in keeping him. I know it's a new manager, but with that kind of investment you would think they would be more patient. Overall, this is a good move for him. Hopefully eyes are on him. As a Porto fan I would love it if he came here. Uribe is not doing the job here.

    Canadians abroad: Dec 06 - Dec 12 2019

Very strong game from Davies yet again. Goal gave him an 8.6 out of 10 for his performance, fourth highest on team. For comparison, Courtinho was highest at 9.4 and Perisic was lowest at 4.8. Davies never put a foot wrong all game. He contributed in attack, even hitting the post as mentioned and he shut everything down on his flank defensively. The recovery speed to close down Son late in the second half was remarkable, then the composure to not foul him in the box was super impressive.

    Lucas Cavallini

15 goals wouldn't get him anywhere near the golden boot in MLS anymore. I like Cavallini, but I think the reality here is that he's the Whitecaps only big acquisition this off season (in part because they've mismanaged their DP spots, in part because they hired a sporting director so late, and in part because they still haven't proven they're not cheap) and casual fans spend the year scapegoating him for not doing more while saying "we spent $5 million on this guy I've never heard of?" The team got 14 goals out of Kamara and Montero (the first time around) for a fraction of the price, and casual fans are going to be expecting anyone they bring in for $5 million to do much, much more.

Its exciting if he was going to a good Vancouver team. Reality is he's joining an undefined project. So the Canadian contingent can only develop good chemistry that is beneficial if they are winning. Case in point Doneil and Derek. Ultimately I would've preferred him to go to Montreal, just for the fact he'll get better some service.

    Cavalry FC Season Thread 2020

We also have to remember that the players aren't just going to jump to MLS just for the sake of it. Assuming that Cavalry raised his pay to keep him and MLS minimum salary is 70k, players have to evaluate "money vs. playing time" and the best way for their value to go up. I was listening to the French podcast Culture Soccer this morning and they talked about Tristan Borges. Going to MLS is good but if you're going to be benched most of the time, how does that helps you? Borges could choose to stay and try to repeat which would increase his value and open him to more opportunities. Same for Zator, he needs to keep playing 90 minutes constantly, not go somewhere and get benched. Lots of minutes, consistency and growth is what eventually get you the best opportunity. Borges is most likely gone regardless but I wouldn't be surprised if young CPL guys that did very well choose to stay

His position is fine. He's not going to tuck inside closer to Thiago and he's not going over commit himself ahead of Perisic. He's also not going to drop because of the press.

Are you saying our English is right and theirs is wrong? Its not a pronunciation problem, its just a different accent. TomAto TomatO. This doesn't bother me as much as butchering, mispronouncing and misspelling names and cities. For example: Turin is Torino. Venice is Venezia.

    The Importance of Alphonso Davies

Only caught parts of the second half but it looks like his defending has really progressed. Now that players are aware of his pace and tracking ability he can throw them off simply by chasing them. There were a couple of wayward crosses because the player felt Davies coming up and rushed to get the ball away. It’s not the kind of thing that shows up in the match stats but has a clear impact on the game.
  39. 1 point
I’d probably play him more advanced in many, maybe even most, situations with Canada but I still find that comment ridiculous. The tactics were wrong against the US but that doesn’t mean Davies couldn’t be used effectively as a LB in an attacking, shutdown, or more balanced role.

    CPL new teams speculation

I actually wrote an economic research paper on the impact of the professional sports on Edmonton's economy. One of the major factors I looked at was the use of public funds for Rogers Place. In most cases, new stadiums don't really affect an economy much, so public funds shouldn't be used. However, in the odd case, new stadiums do add value, in which case it is justified to use public funds. I am of the opinion that each case should be treated individually. The problem is that you can never know the affect on the economy fully untill years after completion.

    Kevin McKenna

I recall how on the old Network54 message board topics would sometimes branch apart as they splintered into different directions. Very organic and difficuilt to follow sometimes but very natural in a way. Starting one place and ending up someplace else unexpectedly. Kinda like McKenna. I'd wager if you'd asked him after his tranfer to Hearts that he'd return to Germany to continue his playing career and build a life in football beyond his playing days he might have voiced some scepticism, and yet there he is. Be interested in seeing a list of all the Canadian players who had successful careers in the '90s and '00s who've made a career for themselves overseas. Out of necessity more than opportunity I'd suppose. Anyway, just a thought. As you were.

The way I see it, MLS keeps expanding and the expansion fees keep increasing at the same pace. CanPL expansion fees will probably increase for a while, then once Pro-Rel is implemented those fees will be frozen or reduced as new clubs will enter at the bottom of the pyramid, keeping it affordable for new clubs to enter. If that seems unfair to clubs who paid at Div 1, then they should have put together a better squad that would have allowed them promotion.

Ferdi Kadioglu comes on for 2nd half with Fenerbahce up 3-1 Genclerbirligi. As I write this, he has just scored to put Fenerbahce up 4-1. Now 4-2 in the 79th minute. Beautiful shot, beautiful goal. The way both Ferdi & Amuz are playing, I would love to see them both involved with camps/U23. Also very interested to see where Gutierrez ends up and see more of what he can do. Regardless of how little he has played, if you suit up for a club like Colo Colo, there is quality.
