Are certain people saying that a Canadian team can never have red, white and blue as their team colours? I personally love the badge. But again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

    The Importance of Alphonso Davies

No, no, no, and NO. Davies can play as a LB for Bayern because he has 10 other world class players on his team to bail him out and close any gaps he might leave while moving forward. Canada DOES NOT have this luxury... its really not that hard to understand. Davies a LB for Canada is a complete waste, specially when him and David together in attack can make any CONCACAF defense uneasy.

Hainault was also in that match. Yeah there's a kid who's been saying he wants to gear up for Canada since he was a kid, despite having another option (would prob be at 30 caps right now for St Lucia). And now he's looking to play in D2 Germany. I say give this kid a chance already!

Clanachan was asked about this at the evening session, and his response that there were several shirt sponsors vying for the rights and that the fans would be blown away by the kit. Got the chance to speak with a few other fans and like me they were not Fury STHs but we all will be be buying season tickets this year.

    The Importance of Alphonso Davies

You need to understand why this happened to understand why Davies at LB for Canada is not a great idea: Davies knows that he's one of the top players on the field when he's on the pitch. That is not the case when he plays for Bayern. Therefore, when he takes the pitch for Canada, he's under pressure to drive the play and control a match, all from a LB position. That is ludicrous. When he plays for Bayern he's free to freewheel because Bayern's backline will bail him out and he's always got at least two options offensively that can get him out of a jam going forward. That is not the case for Canada. Also, people need to stop with the Liverpool and modern game fullbacks ********. That is fine for a club team that can go out and buy solutions to problems in their lineup and build their starting 11. That is not the case for Canada on the international stage. For Canada, you need to start with defenders defending and attackers attacking. Anything more than that is gravy, but that is where you have to start.

I'd say it already came with Forge beating international competition in the CL and Cavalry beating Vancouver over two legs. However, the big one will come later this year when Y9 beats Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver to lift the V Cup.

Insofar as these comments relate to the discussion of MLS-sponsored clubs in CPL vs foreign-sponsored clubs, I think these sorts of comments either misunderstand or misrepresent a lot of what is/was said about MLS. The idea that MLS clubs should be treated differently than foreign investors isn’t some veiled anti-MLS sentiment. Nor is the idea that the success of CPL will partly depend on its ability to cannibalize some support from the big 3. It simply recognizes the current environment in a business context. Prior to CPL coming online, anyone in Canada who wanted to support a Canadian footy team had 3 choices. That was borne out every time I saw a kid wearing a TFC hat or a Caps jersey - and I have seen that sort of thing, many times. And that is in PEI - about as far from a local MLS market as you can get in this country. But now, there is a buzz about HFX. It is mostly because it is the closest pro team and people can watch games - but some people are also excited about Sanoh’s signing since he lived and played here. Hell, I have tried (poorly) defending against him. That is cool as hell to me. Sure some people will support both HFX and TFC, but I am sure some have switched allegiances to the more local team. Any Canadian footy fans in HFX probably have. And that is happening across the country. It isn’t a knock on the MLS clubs or some anti-league sentiment. It is simply the way CPL’s success will work in non-MLS markets. Similarly, the idea of excluding MLS B teams isn’t an attack on that league - it is just a basic business decision that seeks to preserve and maximize the appeal of CPL to fans. That isn’t a “zero sum game” mindset - it is recognizing the reality of the challenges faced by CPL and the optimal path forward for the league.

It is a potentially huge step. Certainly have to think its a position with a long term view. 2021, 2022 or 20Never, probably still anyone's guess. The games this summer need to be well attended. The average was 3k last year. If it can somehow push nearer 5 that will might be enough for triggers to be pulled. It's a hard judge because more people will absolutely jump on board for CPL/televised/formal games. It's hard to bring out general sports fans/non hardcores for friendly games against the likes of Foothills or Highlanders etc. We shall see what lies ahead for the SKSSS 2020. Should be an exciting ride either way!

    York9 - Season Thread 2020

Solid signing. I agree with you that he will push Thompson for a starting spot. Y9 has really done a good job at bringing in quality all over the pitch. Looking at Cavalry and Forge last year they, were always able to bring in a strong replacements as subs or during injury. This year there is going to be real competition for minutes which is a great thing for a team that really finished the last season strong. Doner is the only one that doesn't have a direct replacement breathing down his neck at the moment but I don't expect that to last. Someone will be brought into push him. This is a very strong off season by Y9.

I think forcing the 3 Canadian teams into the CPL is a totally different kettle of fish from doing that to the Fury. You pick your battles and I don’t see CONCACAF picking a fight with MLS.

I don't want City or Red Bull, but I'm quite excited to have Atletico and possibly Lyon coming in. I'm excited because they bring expertise on how to make money in football, how to develop players and how to build a lasting brand that is authentic. I'm also excited because thus far the CSB has been humble, has asked for help and Europe has answered. Unlike our neighbors to the south who think they know everything already.

I will say, I'm not fully opposed to an MLSE-owned team... I just don't want TFCII or anything like that. If it's a completely new team, that just has the same ownership group, bring it on. Same with the other two MLS teams. That being said, I don't really see that happening.

Raise the cap for sure. Better yet, eliminate it, or at the very least, make it relative to a club’s income. I don’t think the cap is there for ‘parity’ to begin with, it’s there to ensure financial viability of the clubs. Anyways, ‘parity’ is both a fallacy and an undesirable one at that. ‘Parity’ is 20 West Broms not 20 Liverpools. It’s much better to let stronger markets grow and pull the rest of the league up with them! (Increased ad revenue, tv viewership, etc).

We pulled 17k playing French Guiana at BC place. Surely we would sell out 6k against t&t twice. Those that couldnt get tickets for the first game could go to the second. Not sure exactly why they wouldnt want the revenue? God forbid some of it could pay towards another needed friendly.

    The Importance of Alphonso Davies

I was referencing the win against the USA when David and Davies played up top together. Would you say that was a waste of his skills? I would argue his skills were on full display in that game. I think it worked out very well. Davies got on the ball, had space to run at people, caused all sorts of havoc and his threat caused anxiety for the USA backline. David was a great complement and was/is very good at sniffing out mistakes (that Davies' threat created). Not to mention David has fantastic movement and provided an outlet. He is not your traditional target man, but he helped the team in that regard. Surely there is room to play in different ways under different circumstances, but so far the USA win was the best game we have seen from Canada so you'll excuse me for believing in the David-Davies partnership up top. ------------------Borjan------------- Laryea---Vitoria---Cornelius---Miller ----Hutch/Piette/Eusaquio---Kaye------- ----------Arfield---------Osorio----------- -------------David------Davies------------- To flip your argument around, Cavallini and Hoilett are two "tier 1" players (as Herdman would call them) off the bench and very few concacaf teams have such a luxury. Our starting 11 is arguably weaker on paper, but if the team is playing a system that works better then it's worth it. Thus far we haven't been able to fit all of our best players on the field in a system that works anyways, unless we are drubbing Cuba 6 or 7 nil. Davies at LB was a loss against Haiti and the USA. Do we really need more evidence this doesn't work against the better teams?

Confirming what we thought we knew. That we have a lot of very talented players who slip through the cracks because no place to play. The Canadian Premier League could be the best thing to ever happen for soccer in Canada. I don't even think David is speaking about players on Canada's U17 team that were very talented. .. It seemed like he was addressing players who didn't even get chosen for that.

But the ramifications of any sort of ruling would be huge, especially as that would affect Cardiff and Swansea in the English system. Or Monaco in the French system. I just see all parties simply letting sleeping dogs lie and continue with the status quo unless someone really decides to upset the apple cart.

Definitely on Fisk. Not so much on Issey or Haber! TMG, Dixon, Bustos are all upgrades and a fit DeJong will be huge. I am not sure Hernandez, Gonzalez and Norman Jnr were huge losses. Neither were the others they released. Still expect a fair amount of movement of players in though. They need at least another CM, Striker and another Defender or two. The Wheeldon Jnr. vs Kah fashion off Derby will be a highlight.

Scott went back to Austria healthy and played in 4 friendly matches. Unfortunately, in the last friendly before the 1st game of the 2nd half of the regular season, he was injured. The standard model in Europe is that the new club of a loaned player pays the salary, in its entirety. They are getting a piece they need without having to pay a transfer, and they pick up the salary cost. For players with very high salaries, yes, a part only could be paid, but not gifting the player to the new side. It would be rare for a new club to only pay 15% of a salary that is not enough for the team loaning out, it makes more sense to have that player on their books. Only with young players who can't get minutes on a first team or is a reserve player needing a challenge might the original club accept the receiving club pay less of the salary; that might have been the case when Ballou was loaned to Albacete by Barça. I completely agree that what should count towards salary cap is what the club is paying, strictly. And if it is just a part of the original salary, that makes loans potentially very beneficial for a club, you can get real quality for less. I too heard there was a loan restriction, I think that Gil Marín said, as you comment, that it was two players. Meaning the rest have to be signed outright. The solution is multiple: -establish a minimum salary -don't overpay the top tier, don't break the bank on high-profile players -improve travel and schedule to allow teams to have a shorter roster -facilitate short-term entry of local amateur players to cover injuries (we saw this when a keeper was out) -slowly raise the salary cap, even if by 4-5% a year over the next 4-5 years. -support players in quality ways in things like providing shared apartments, support to travel and move to the club, health benefits, and even, if need be, finding or setting up part-time work for players. I know that this is rather common in Spanish 4th tier which is totally regional and where salaries are too low. Quite often the club asks club STHs who are business people to help out. I think we are a ways away from this last aspect still.

It also looks like the NHL, NBA, CFL and NFL, so don't think that's true. The reason North American leagues do this is that a single table is easy when you can drive from one end of a country to another in 3 or 4 hours as is the case in many European countries, but makes less sense if you have teams in cities stretched out over a distance comparable to Amsterdam to Tehran.

I wonder how they plan to get their season ticket numbers up in a hurry? I think it would be a nice gesture to reach out to all Fury holders (former, I guess) and offer some sort of discount to give the new club a go. Whatever the plan, the kind of need to get moving. As much as an 8th club solves so many problems, playing in an empty stadium will look bad.
