  3. You think Brym is capable of running his butt off? How did that work out during Concacaf OQ? Would rather Millar start up front as he does work his butt off and is solid defensively.

  5. the truth is even 3 points keeps us in solid position. 4 would be a good result though and anything more than that excellent. After the first window and all those draws, simulations are are generally showing 18-19 points will be enough for 3rd spot. For us that means winning most of our remaining home games (we could realistically afford to drop some points to Mexico and the US) and stealing another few points on the road (El Salvador, Jamaica and Panama are probably our best opportunities. All that to say - I sure hope we get 4 or more points but a win vs Panama is by far the most important result.

  6. Denying two points for Mexico is extremely irrelevant in the grand scheme. They are finishing first. 1 point in Mexico and then 0 points in Jamaica would be a big miss IMO.

  7. I am assuming that many or most of the Mexicans do not normally live or play at high altitude, so I wonder if the Mexicans will face, to some degree, the same altitude issues as we will.

  8. This is what I have been saying. Preserving/rotating some of our key players against Mexico so that we can go all out for the last two does not equate to throwing the game. It is just a conservative approach to the game, in the context of the rest of the window. If it was a one-off in Azteca? Sure, go balls-to-the-wall and see what happens. But we need to be smarter and more strategic about this 3 game window.

  9. I guess the point i am making is: nobody is suggesting go into Mexico and tank. But you cant treat all three matches the same with the so called “Go for it” attitude that someone mentioned earlier. There is a squad you need to field for the “Go for it” games and a squad for what i call the “Containment” games. Or the “minimize the damage” games. To protect our nice goal diff of +3, the containment game plan and squad would be the most prudent option in Mexico city.

  11. Exactly. I think some of our group equates playing the 1B team as throwing in the towel. It’s not. Our 1B is a solid squad and CAN take points in Mexico. We need to be strategic and get minimum 4 points. As long as our top players are healthy for the last 2 games we stand to have a shot at 6.

  17. I honestly don’t think I’ve said this of a Canada player before, I’ll be very disappointed if I see Brym in a game. I literally thought he may have been the worst player on the pitch at the Olympic qualifying. Bair a close second (don’t tell the guys at the Third Sub podcast haha).

Yeah the beginning of it sounds more of what he was actually trying to say. He may have said pro career at the end but meant Russian Premier League or new team. Don’t think it is a big deal. If he continues to play well Herdman will have a look at him.
    4 points
  19. I think it's just for the Mexico match. That's why I feel Brym is in the squad. Herdman picked a guy who played on the Friday who can run his butt off this Thursday without needing to worry about match #5 and #6. Bayern and Lille both play on Sunday. I don' think Herdman plays David and Davies until the 60th minute and that is unless we still have a shot at beating (or drawing) Mexico.

He kind of resembles van dijk before he got injured. He was also a forward converted to a centre back. Same size and build and same skill set. It’s amazing to see a kid grow and grow. Thanks for all the love and feed backs. We appreciate it. Also the negative stuff. Everyone’s has a right to say what they want. I bust on Lebron games too because he is the best. ❤️

  22. At 2200m, every breath you draw has ~25% less oxygen. You’re putting a much greater stress on your body than an ordinary game, and that’s before accounting for a high quality opponent who will monopolize possession. Recovery time is proportionate to that stress. There is less than 72 hours between Mexico and Jamaica.

  25. Afik, the prevailing theory for sport at altitude gives us two options: A. Get in and out as quickly as possible. or B. Acclimatize well in advance. I forget the time frame, but I’m pretty sure it’s closer to weeks rather than days. B is not available to us. A is the way.

Don't get me wrong, I think Ennin should get a look at some point, but I don't blame Herdman for going with the guy he knows for this window... cause really, is 5 games and 0 goals for a mid/lower table Russian Prem club moving the needle for us right now? Probably not, so might as well go with the guys you know.

  28. Right now it it is two very different situations that you can really compare, due to a difference is capacity levels, political climates and some of the different views towards the pandemic. We are certainly not out of the woods yet. That is not to say that Edmonton will not bring out a big crowd, but comparing one place to another right now is apples and oranges.

  29. Hard to believe some of the research that suggests arriving just before an athletic event at elevation is the better option than even just 3 or 4 days prior to get acclimatized. Here's my own experience: Elevation sucks. During a trip through Central and South America I had to adjust many times to higher elevations in places like La Paz, Quito and Machu Picchu. It hits you basically as soon as you arrive. I noticed it even while walking for the first few days. Basically, I had ZERO desire to do anything strenuous during that initial acclimatization phase. Obviously I'm no elite athlete but at the time I was an avid hiker/mountain biker and without those first few days to adjust I was basically useless. Even the one time I went to Denver for a snowboard trip it took a day or two before my legs didn't feel like jello. I can't imagine arriving at elevation and then immediately having to do perform at the highest level, no pun intended. Even just to get used to the climate, field conditions, get mentally prepped etc. it just makes sense to get there early. Anyways, just some thoughts.

  33. All I know is that these games are fast approaching and I am excited as hell. Dam I am glad we did the job against Haiti and Suriname to make the Octo. I know we were expected to, but regardless of the outcome of this process, this will have been a massive series of games for our guys. The irony is that in the midst of a global pandemic we have been treated to a feast of international footy.

  34. Strong squad but Brym? Really? Herdman seems to take issue with Ennin's "5 pro games" but if you compare the players Ennin has vastly more pro experience than Brym. Not to mention Brym sucked at OGQ and hasn't been with the MNT in 2 years. Give me Akindele.

  35. Buchanan will start. He will be our most rested player having 8 days between his previous club match and the Mexico game. Herdman hinted in the OneSoccer interview a few weeks ago about managing the first match of the window better and having players that were better rested (fewer guys who had played on the Sunday prior).

  36. Let's bring the discussion over on the Liam Millar thread over here, since it is about Alphonso Davies. My patience is running thin with so many fans and supposedly knowledgable supporters of the national team, who insist on playing our best player where he can do the least damage. We are simply taking an "accident", Bayern Munich in a pinch with injuries, and making it into a law: Davies plays left side. The other part of that story is Robinson easing a kid into a team, all credit to him. Now for a team with prolific goal scorers galore and plenty of attacking options, a team that steamrolls most rivals, it's fine, let him be a role player. Or for a coach wanting to give a kid some time to fit in. That cannot be the case for Canada. We need our best playing in their best positions if we don't want to be sitting watching Panama playing Portugal and Uruguay in the first round of the Qatar World Cup, in a year. And Alphonso, if he is meant to be an attacking player, is a right side attacker turning in. But don't take my word for it. This is the player that Bayern bought for a record price (and no, they did not buy a left back). They bought an electric fast attacker who plays right, turns in and scores. Check these MLS goals, all 8. Only two is he even remotely on the left side and the rest middle or right. The best, from the right. But some here, and Herdman, are shitting themselves over this. Why? I'll take this with Tajon or Miller playing up the left and turning in to shoot, or assist. I'll take Tajon's goal against Mexico or Miller at Basel. Now if tactics or game circumstances have him elsewhere, fine, he's great. A great option for assisting from the left, can't complain with that: but only as the exception, not the rule. Waiting for everyone to tell me that what he did 3 years ago in MLS he is not capable of reproducing now.

His playmaking has been really good though. There's a point where you have to be a little more adventurous - a known quantity known for underwhelming doesn't do much for you. I'm not saying it'll make much of a difference - neither of them would be likely to appear. Still, it's not like Brym has a wealth of experience with the senior team. Now that we're taking an expanded squad, we should be inviting the guy doing just as well at a higher level.

  42. I'm setting my expectations at 4 points from these 3 matches. I think an away point (most likely in Jamaica) and a home win would be a successful window. Anything above 4 would be fantastic, but I think 4 keeps us nicely on track for that target range of 18-23 points.

  43. "on a surface they won't be happy with" and did they ask their own players on this? Cause I'm gonna take a wild guess and say the Canadian players aren't thrilled they're gonna play on concrete. It's such a dilemma. Playing away from the the typical 3 Canada cities lowers the chance have having Mexican fans take over the stadium (heck, we also have to hope the weather doesn't scare away Canada fans too), on the other hand, the playing conditions are awful and could back fire on our own players.

  45. I think we all kind of had a hunch this was coming with the CSA needing to test out Edmonton ahead of the WC bid but does this seem a bit crazy to anyone else? Average daily high temperatures in Edmonton during November are 1 degree... I have no doubt this will prove an advantage but wow... EDIT: kind of wish these games were against those countries that always schedule mid-day peak heat matches like Cuba or Honduras.

  46. I wonder if he’s trying to get a look at some of the fringe euro guys now in training, because they may be needed in Jan-March when the MLS guys are out of season. Most of the MLS guys got time during the Gold Cup, so the euros are the only real unknowns for Herdman.

  47. The only similarity between FC Edmonton and the CanMNT is that they both play soccer. I think Canada will draw extremely well there given the magnitude of the matches, the opponents, and the Davies factor.
