  1. Eustaquio on playing with kaye: "brotherhood, I run for him and he runs for me." I'm not crying, you're crying!

  2. I am a fan and really glad Theo is in the setup. He will make lots of contributions in the years to come. But I disagree with a couple of things. He hasn’t proven that he is a Premier a league talent yet. Not a criticism of him because he is absolutely on the right trajectory to get there. But he hasn’t proven it yet. Wolves may be loaning him out to continue his development into what we all hope he will be. And I don’t think he is getting pushed to the back burner. He is a young guy, eager to be on the team, and getting sub minutes in a position where we are pretty damn deep. When we have our full lineup, he is clearly going to be behind David, Larin, and Cav at forward and in some situations the experience of a guy like Tesho may be what is required (versus the energy and trickery of Theo). And we are deep on the wings as well, with Davies and Buchanan pretty much locking down the outside positions. It isn’t a knock on Theo that he didn’t blast into our starting lineup. It is a testament to the quality attacking depth we have. We are now a damn hard lineup to crack in the attacking group.

  3. Legit man crush with Eustaquio after that 3 question post-game with Platt.

  4. I’ve been waiting all day for @Olympique_de_Marseille to start this thread 😂 Also, if you told me we would play USA, Costa Rica and Mexico back to back to back I’d take it in a heartbeat. This is excellent prep for wcq.

    Stephen Eustaquio

Best player out there today. Completely owning that midfield. Guy is everywhere.

  6. Undisputed #3 player for Canada after Davies and David. At club and national level.

  7. For what its worth we will be going up against Mexico without Davies, David, Hutchinson, Kennedy, Arfield, Larin, Akinola, Borjan, Millar, James, Adekugbe, Vitoria and Cavallini, most of whom will feature in WCQ. That is why this tournament is/was so important. It either takes the pressure off some of the guys above knowing they don't have to do everything themselves; or puts some pressure on. Hey some of these guys are gonna be some competition for my spot.

  8. Unreal performance tonight. He'll have a huge point to prove against Mexico after Cruz Azul let him go.

  9. Heading into the final WCQ matches of the last round, we were all wondering who would step up and boss the midfield for us in the absence of Hutch and Arfield. Eustaquio was excellent, as was Kaye, but what we've seen these past few games of the Gold Cup from Eustaquio is another level entirely. I know that Dunfield claimed that Oso was the quarterback of this team, and I was thinking that could be true if we said he was the quarterback of our offense, because in truth Eustaquio was the quarterback of the entire team. And then I remembered that Stephen set up the first goal and scored the second. So, he's pretty much just the quarterback of everything.

  10. Plenty of jet flying and we know Herdman is a wheelin dealin son of a gun. Injuries aside, this tournament has been everything we hoped and needed it to be for our squad. Big tests, great experience. We likely bow out on Thursday but we get another chance to measure up and experience our toughest Ocho opponent. Full credit to Herdman and the team. Eustaquio is immense. Bring on the Mexicans.

  11. You guys are all just jelly of wheeler and dunfield's inside access. 😀 10 years ago we'd all be watching on crappy illegal streams and now we are complaining about the commentators on the dedicated Canadian national team broadcaster. We've become spoiled.

    The Road to Qatar.

Larin for Hoilett, Kennedy for Adekugbe, Johnston for Kennedy... Crepeau for Borjan I am on the fence about, but I can be talked into it at this point. I just feel so much more confident when the ball is at his feet. ------------David----Larin----------- ----------------Arfield---------------- Davies--Hutchinson--Eustaquio--Buchanan ------Kennedy-Vitoria-Johnston------------ ---------------Borjan (not sure on this one) Also....Miller is doing very well. Kennedy was excellent in June, but his performances make you wonder...

  13. What a fantastic performance. Dominant and convincing. If you didn't know the current rankings in the region and you just knew one of the teams was 4th and the other was 7th, you'd be shocked to see who was in what spot, based on this match anyway. I didn't think I could love Eustaquio more than I did already. I'm so glad we have him. We've just defeated a traditional CONCACAF power (in style, without some very key players) in the elimination round of a tournament. It's exactly what we needed in the lead up to the Octagonal.

  14. A quick update after our outstanding win against Costa Rica- our live ranking is up to date. Going into the Semi Finals match against Mexico (it’s so awesome to say that) we are on 1399.28 points and our live ranking is 59th overall. It also places us 5th in CONCACAF for the first time in a long time. These wins add up and matter. edit- similar to the last Gold Cup- playing non FIFA clubs in the Gold Cup like Martinique “cost” Canada about 15-20 points. Playing them 2 cycles in a row, plus all the non-FIFA teams we played in CONCACAF League has actually lowered our rating by over 50 points under the new methodology. That’s a lot of points and is the difference between us being mid 40’s and high 59’s.

  17. Akindele got himself into great spots. He did exactly what he was supposed to do in the 95th min chance, it was a good save by the keeper. Herdman will be pleased to have a 3rd or 4th string striker option of Akindele's quality.

    Gold Cup 2021

We need top 3 in CONCACAF for World Cup Qualifying to make it straight to the World Cup. Just saying.

  19. Given the absences, it is hard to argue against the idea that a semi final spot is success for Herdman. We need to be a top 4 team to have a shot at Qatar, so semis was the bar we needed to reach.

  20. Wasn't there a FK that was going to the top corner that Crepeau did well to tip over the goal?

    Herdman new head coach

Big credit to Herdman for what was a masterclass against "superior" opposition without basically most of our starting XI. Cue the usual mouthbreathers doing mental gymnastics to explain away why any credit should be given to the gaffer.

  24. Just to clarify...Vitoria and Cav will play in the final. They'll just have to sit out the win against Mexico in the semi-final first. 😉

  26. Despite the criticism of Wheeer and Dunfield from some, I really do like Petrillo, Hume and KJ doing doing the deeper analysis.

  27. What a half. Absolutely bossed them, another Octo squad. -Buchanan showing he can play on the right without losing a step is absolutely terrifying for the rest of CONCACAF. Davies and Buchanan are going to be a handful -Eustaquio is quickly becoming my favorite MNT player. Absolutely sublime on the ball. -Glad to see Kaye pick it up after a rough few matches Let's close this out!!!

  28. We have three matches over seven days in that first window. We’re not going to go with one XI and there’s going to be a ton of rotation. People keep talking about a “best XI” but that will mostly be irrelevant in the Ocho

  29. I guess "resting" Estaquio against the US was the right thing to do after all. Lol

  30. Because Theo only missed 2 great chances in even less time on the pitch? I don't get it. We are talking about Tesho, who has never been a major scorer, he's an MLS journeyman. And he came in from his club, into the mix late, and subbed on and did his job. Even understood he had to take a tactical yellow. You can never judge a player by that short time on that short notice, and of course I also forgive Theo not scoring on both those, he was very unlucky.

  32. Following this national team for as long as I have, it is indeed a rare good feeling to watch Canada in such an important match and not be too worried of the result for most of it. :-) Not much to add than what has been written by you fine people other than I think props also has to go to Herdman for going with what was essentially a 3-4-3 formation and inserting a press that Costa Rica completely did not expect. The only negative for me was TSN not televising the match, as I guarantee there would have been a lot of clueless casuals thinking this was an Olympic match and ratings would have automatically been 1.5 mil. 😄

  33. Good to see Crepeau get a well deserved clean sheet, he has not been at fault for any of the goals allowed IIRC and has been very steady. He deserves it. (Apparently he didn't have a shot on goal tonight) Herdman's next speech will be, you have every excuse to lose to Mexico (injuries, suspension) but this will be a turning point in how you react to the adversity.

  34. "Canada too much for Suarez. Absolutely dismantled his side." - Dunfield. Yeah Suarez. Fuck you. Payback for 8-1. You're embarrassing.

    Kamal Miller

The reality is when we essentially play 3 games in 7 days in multiple different windows we will need both Miller and Kennedy. Depth is going to be massive this WCQ campain. Miller will 100% have a role in the upcoming cycle at some point, and in my eyes, although not perfect he has proven he is capable.

  37. I think people should keep in mind that when Akindele was brought on, the main job was to help protect a 2 goal lead and finish off the game. That is a very different situation than when we are chasing a goal and need some creative spark in a must-win situation. Tesho is a seasoned veteran with thousands of hours of play in a respectable league. He knew what his job was and he stuck to it. If we were down a goal against CR, we would have seen a very different approach to the subs - and may have seen Theo thrown into the mix.

  38. Got to finally watch it back. - A better start which was huge. - Eustaquio is a game changer in the most simple and efficient ways. - Pleased with Miller growing into the three, Vitoria is a tough miss as he is always an aerial presence at both ends. - So pleased for Junior, skill is still there obviously and so much help managing a game. - Buchanan still voted mostly likely to make things happen. Runs off him and/or his decisions in picking the last pass could improve slightly. - Everybody else did their job 95% of the time. - Yellows are tough. Some silly. Tempted to do a Arnautovic/Michail Antonio and make Corbeanu a centre forward and run at Mexico all game. - Nothing to lose at this point and all pressure on them next match. Rolled on early early Saturday morning.

  40. I already posted this but just want to reiterate: this was incredible. For those of us that have followed this team for the past 20 years it’s unheard of. We just dominated a top CONCACAF team. We didn’t just squeak by .. we dominated. Maybe it was the lack of expectation/pressure... but this was wild. Enjoy - maybe it will happen more but it sure as hell hasn’t happened in a long time.

  42. I'm loving the player all around and I think he might also get a step up if he wants it from a club perspective but im just wondering... is Mr Lahey a proper knick name for Richie Laryea or should we let it breathe a bit? I'm sorry its all i think of everytime I hear his name But on a serious note, the kid does everything out there

  43. Zero shots on goal. We were in full control. This bodes very well for the Ocho. On to Mexico. We're playing with house money now as far as I am concerned.

  45. I did not expect THAT. We just manhandled a 3-4 concacaf team. Yes, they're getting up there in years however that does not take away their talent and experience. It's not that Costa Rica faded or got tired, we dominated the game. This was without Double D's, Hutch, Kennedy and Arfield. I need to think about this, not sure how I feel about this new Canada......

  46. Great game. No collapse a la Haiti. The press was executed very well. Tajon is a beast. And Herdman got the tactics right (sorry @SpecialK). So much to be happy with in this one. Off to the semi finals. Awesome.
