  1. Going to be a tough one. Costa Rica is much closer to having their best team for this than we do, so if we win, it will be a great sign for WCQ. Costa Rica haven't looked great but they have had enough experience & tactical acumen to pull out victories thus far. It's a team that knows how to win, ours still needs to prove we can win knock-out matches, something that hasn't happened in the Gold Cup since we smashed Guatemala 3-0 in the 2007 Q-F, and this is a much stronger opponent that that. Hopefully we take that step tonight.

Played the last twenty. Did a lot of defending tracked back really well and made a few blocks. Good to cut his teeth and make his debut. Good first win too. Great stadium. The FC Basel fans made the journey and sung outside the whole game!! Awesome!! Bring in the Canada game now!!

  4. Best game as a pro. Guti was terrific. Rock solid defensively and stopped every attempted dribble past him. On the attack, he was fantastic with precision passes. And then his dead ball delivery - best I have seen from a Canadian player in a long time. His confidence is growing every game.

  6. Confession time: when Eustaquio announced he had switched to us, I was lukewarm about the announcement, mostly because I have a predisposition against Canadians who once played for other countries (hello Vitoria). I'm sure you could go back and find a post or two of me saying "Eustaquio who? Gimme Sammy Piette all day." Fuck was I wrong.

In CM and playing very well. Helped set up the early goal. The fact that Delgado, Endoh, Gonzalez, and Dwyer start for this team is absolutely rediculous. They are horrible.

    Gold Cup 2021

So far there has only been one game all tournament when a lower FIFA ranked team beat a higher ranked FIFA team. That was Costa Rica (50) over Jamaica (45). Let's hope Canada (70) gets the second "upset" win by that metric tonight.

A great start to the season and Regensburg played a solid game. Nice to see the trades/additions to the team make a difference. Scott and the new back Breitkreuz are a powerful combination. The Fotmob, WhoScored and Sofascore evaluation of Scott's performance: 7.2, 7.3 and 6.9. Singh (new) was highly ranked.

  15. I just stumbled upon this article on the Germany manager of the year: Chelsea FC: Thomas Tuchel named Germany Manager of the Year. https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2021/07/25/thomas-tuchel-named-germany-manager-of-the-year It got me to thinking, why have we never added Canadian Manager of the Year to our informal year-end polls along with Male and Female Players of the Year? With the rise in the number of fully professional Canadian managers with the Canadian League, it might be worth trying in December. It could even help to raise the profile slightly of a guy like Marcina who might be doing something impressive in another league below the radar.

  21. I'm glad our top players aren't playing in the Gold Cup. The guys there now are going to be the core of our lineup going into the Octogonal (I refuse to call it Ocho). We are not always going to have the big names available, the other guys are going to have to step up to the plate, that's why I enjoyed the USA game. They faced some real adversity for the first time in... two years? The more time for the Crepeaus, Cavallinis, Buchanans, Corbeanus, Johnstons, the better. Shame young Millar and Kennedy aren't there but that is the point, everybody can't always be there. We really could use Arfield, he might be the most valuable player that we have (or had) I'm really pleased with Crepeau, I think we are in good hands if something happens to Borjan. Good to see Crepeau getting the minutes and making good decisions and being very solid. I had been bragging them up for being the type of solid folks who could stand up to a test but the six yellow card game kinda shook my faith a little (I don't blame the ref for all of that). I just hope they justify my faith against CR like they did against the US when faced with adversity.

I hate to be that guy, but if the stench of homerism in a Voyageur board is too much, go to whatever board you want to and jabber about whatever they are talking about. The vast majority of us here are CDN fans, fans of CDN players and teams, and we mainly talk about those topics. Maybe Singh wont turn out to be a MLS level player etc etc but he didnt get beat on every one on one, he didnt let every runner get behind him. If you are suggesting that than i would suggest you are kidding yourself. He played very narrow and loose on the wingers, ie didnt close down the crossers. I wonder if he was told to "stay at home" dont go chasing the winger to the flag pole and let guys get behind him etc. (The way we see Lareya and Buchanan make full time FB look foolish) And letting the crosses come in was secondary.

  26. Is Costa Rica a 'bogeyman side' though? My impression is that we've typically played up to expectations against them (lots of draws). In fact, in the 2000s, Canada has 2 wins, 5 draws, and 4 losses against Costa Rica, a team that has qualified for the World Cup 4 times during that period (Canada qualified 0 times, in case anyone had lost count).

It seems like the majority of us have been critical of Singh, so don’t see much homerism going on here. I also would like to see Dunn get a shot, as I kind of see Singh as the kid who always got the look because he was bigger and could physically dominate everyone else at youth level. He does seem very slow and lacks instincts (defensive and offensive) at this level. But I’m not sure how anyone could be upset that we’d like to see our young Canadians get a chance over Gonzalez who makes horrendous mistake after mistake every game and doesn’t seem to put in much effort either (whether it be getting back into the play after getting beaten, or winning headers on balls put into the box).

  28. This isn't true. It will be about $ some day but right now there are many issues regarding player safety, lack of coverage/resources for players injured on the job, as well as contract issues. I've personally spoken to several players across the league. They not only want a seat/voice at the table, they critically need it.

  31. This was a response to UT saying "I think the main difference is that crowds for these teams' matches will be small". I'm not sure if that first sentence is supposed to imply that TFC II's average attendance in 2019 of 168 is supposed to be comparable to York 9's 2,668 or Edmonton's 2,905. But anyways, it sounds like from the bold above that you want TFC, Vancouver, and Montreal to be playing in the CPL, and their reserve teams to be playing in L1O, League 1 BC, and PLSQ, and their youth teams to play in their provincial leagues. Am I right or am I missing some years long stance that doesn't quite match up as well with what you said as what I just suggested? I would like to preemptively apologize to everyone for whatever happens next.

    The Road to Qatar.

I don't do anything to mask my real-life identity on this forum. There are people on here who can almost certainly identify me if they read all of my posts going back, particularly if they were regulars at Swangard for Whitecaps and Canada matches between 1990 and 2005. I also, Covid travel restrictions aside, return to Vancouver every year, or so, to visit family. If there's a game on when I'm back, I usually go with friends. I'm definitely not hiding from anything I have to say here nor from anyone who might be offended by my comments. In fact, if any Vs travel to Melbourne for the WWC in 2 years, I'm more than happy to sit down for a beer or a meal with just about anyone who travels, including you.

  36. Funny, my first reaction was a quick browse through to see if Henry was in or out, and sighed in relief when I saw he was on the bench. Not that I dislike him, I'm just very worried about him in these high pressure, one off games. Surprised to see Piette isn't starting. Although he doesn't have Kaye or Osorio's skill moving forward, I still feel he's been playing better than both of them in this tournament. I guess the plan is to take the game to them instead of making sure we're solid defensively. I would've been more conservative when we have both Laryea and Buchanan in there with the backline being our weakest piece.

  37. I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority, and Herdman obviously disagrees, but I'd feel more comfortable with Henry in the lineup than some (all?) of the back 3 today.

Wasnt Morrow injured in warmup? So the coach tells him in no certain terms, he isnt getting into any games, then he throws Singh into LB after the warm up..and he is supposed to play well?? He prob got a 5min crash course on what the coach wanted him to do and then he was into the deep end. It looked like he played narrow and loose on every winger and prob he was told not to let anyone get around him. It was rough, but at least it was against Chicago and not a good team eh?? Tough break for Morrow, I thought he played pretty good last game. But nice break for Singh and way to get on the field. Isnt this how Miller got shoe horned into LB at Orlando??

I actually think he pretty much disgraced himself. It’s tough to blame him too much - young guy out of position. But he was a step slow the entire night and couldn’t deal with any Chicago attacks. They went right Singh continually and probably should have scored 3+ times

  42. That's usually how the role works in Canada. The host/asking question role is about being a facilitator - so being neutral is default setting with being a devil's advocate if the discussion is too one-sided. Compared to British networks, this style does look like cheerleading. The host is also largely at the mercy of the show's producer. Andi Petrillo acts with much more leeway on OneSoccer than she does on CBC. OneSoccer Today has much more free-wheeling coverage of CPL & CanadaSoccer than MLS on TSN coverage - which ranges from being plain vanilla to boosterism. Now where networks have paid big bucks for league rights, being not a cheerleader is a career risk. So, it has become the default setting in the US especially for the NFL. It's more telling what they don't say or cover. And in a social media dominated world, it's more lucrative now to break news by getting chummy with the league rather than providing incisive commentary.

  43. They seemed to be short in midfield and apparently just signed Lemina from Southampton. (Seem to have backed Galtier and brought a lot of players in). Schneiderlin hasn't play in many of their friendlies but I don't hear about a long injury. Hopefully, he will continue to get chances.

    Jonathan David

New interview on the LOSC site. https://www.losc.fr/actualites-foot-lille/jonathan-david-«-sur-le-terrain-cest-un-autre-niveau-» One year ago, Jonathan David arrived at LOSC from KAA Gent (Belgium). Ambitious, the native of Brooklyn wasted no time, winning the French championship with his partners in his first season. Real executioner of the defenses of Ligue 1 Uber Eats (13 goals), Jonathan David is not satisfied. Back with the group after a well-deserved vacation, the number 9 Lille delivers his ambitions, talks about the arrival of Jocelyn Gourvennec and praises the return of José Fonte. Interview. You joined the group during an internship in the Netherlands two weeks ago. How were your holidays ? (Smiles) When you've just been crowned champion, you can only have a good vacation! These few days allowed me to rest with my family and my friends in Canada. And then, I also had time to think about what we had just accomplished together. It was crazy. Now that you allude to it… Have you taken the time to digest this title? The time, I took it. But I think people don't realize how tough it is to win a title. I didn't realize it myself. I tell myself that we did something incredible. We will realize this all the more in the future, it is obvious. And from a personal point of view, how do you see your first season in the Lille jersey? We were crowned champions, so obviously it ended well (he smiles). Now, I am not forgetting my difficulties at the start of the season. I made a lot of progress and the second part of the championship went very well. I arrived in a new club, in a new league and in a new country. Obviously, it takes time to adapt. It lasted a bit, it's true. But it ended well. A few days after your title of Champion of France, you joined your national team to play four matches. You even scored four goals. What are your goals with Canada? We want to qualify for the World Cup. We have a very good, very tight-knit group. Our coach (John Herdman, editor's note) did a really big job. Now we move forward, we continue to win. It is a dream for every football player to play in a World Cup and represent his country. The World Cup is played every four years, so to have a chance to play it, you have to be efficient. Speaking of a competition you want to discover, you are going to play, for the first time in your career, the UEFA Champions League. When I arrived at LOSC, I knew it was a very ambitious club playing at the top of the table. I knew I would have the opportunity to play in the Champions League by signing here. At the start of the season, it wasn't something I thought about because I was taking game after game. And then, as we went along, we started to think about it, more and more strongly. It is the best European competition for clubs. It's exciting, I can't wait to get started. And then you can listen with your own ears to the Champions League anthem, music so dear to every footballer. To tell you a secret, I often heard players talk about the Champions League anthem. They all say that she is exceptional, that she gives the chills. When we tell you that, you want to experience it for yourself! This summer, Jocelyn Gourvennec took over from Christophe Galtier. How do you judge his first steps at the head of LOSC? We chatted when I arrived in the Netherlands. Over the days, he gives me more instructions. He is a calm person who knows what he wants. He knows how to do it. Over time, I'm sure we'll do good things together. Against SL Benfica (0-1), the team made a good performance but lacked success, like your strike on the crossbar. Is that also how you feel? To be honest, I felt on the pitch that we had moved to another level. There was a big difference in intensity compared to previous matches, from their side as from ours. With the sequence of matches, we progress, we regain form, we put our game in place. We are more and more dangerous, and we must continue. In my opinion, we are not yet 100%, including myself, but we are getting closer. I have had opportunities. Now I have to be decisive. In the stands of the Estàdio Algarve, we heard a familiar voice, that of José Fonte, who has extended his contract for another season. I imagine it is a satisfaction for you and the group to find your captain! Obviously we are happy to find him. José brings leadership and discipline. It puts us all in the right direction. With him, everyone knows what to do, and this is very important for a group. We have performed in our discipline thanks to him. The role of captain is something he has in him. It is made for this. He is preparing to join us in a match, and we also want to find him quickly. In a few days, you will face Paris Saint-Germain at the Trophée des Champions. What are the group's ambitions before this meeting? It's a final. We're going to play it to win, to lift the cup. Last season we played a very important game against them (0-1 victory at Parc des Princes, 31st day of Ligue 1 Uber Eats) . Although I have fond memories of it, I know it will be a very different game. But we will do everything to win and make our supporters proud. What are your ambitions for this season? I want us to go as far as possible in all the competitions in which we are going to play, including the Champions Trophy. We want to finish as high as possible everywhere. Regarding the championship, we will see at the end of the season where we are, and what we can do. Personally, I want to score as much as possible and be as decisive as possible. Obviously, I want to be better than last season in terms of statistics. Like any competitor. Supporters, I only have one thing to tell you: See you soon !
