    Jonathan David

New interview on the LOSC site. https://www.losc.fr/actualites-foot-lille/jonathan-david-«-sur-le-terrain-cest-un-autre-niveau-» One year ago, Jonathan David arrived at LOSC from KAA Gent (Belgium). Ambitious, the native of Brooklyn wasted no time, winning the French championship with his partners in his first season. Real executioner of the defenses of Ligue 1 Uber Eats (13 goals), Jonathan David is not satisfied. Back with the group after a well-deserved vacation, the number 9 Lille delivers his ambitions, talks about the arrival of Jocelyn Gourvennec and praises the return of José Fonte. Interview. You joined the group during an internship in the Netherlands two weeks ago. How were your holidays ? (Smiles) When you've just been crowned champion, you can only have a good vacation! These few days allowed me to rest with my family and my friends in Canada. And then, I also had time to think about what we had just accomplished together. It was crazy. Now that you allude to it… Have you taken the time to digest this title? The time, I took it. But I think people don't realize how tough it is to win a title. I didn't realize it myself. I tell myself that we did something incredible. We will realize this all the more in the future, it is obvious. And from a personal point of view, how do you see your first season in the Lille jersey? We were crowned champions, so obviously it ended well (he smiles). Now, I am not forgetting my difficulties at the start of the season. I made a lot of progress and the second part of the championship went very well. I arrived in a new club, in a new league and in a new country. Obviously, it takes time to adapt. It lasted a bit, it's true. But it ended well. A few days after your title of Champion of France, you joined your national team to play four matches. You even scored four goals. What are your goals with Canada? We want to qualify for the World Cup. We have a very good, very tight-knit group. Our coach (John Herdman, editor's note) did a really big job. Now we move forward, we continue to win. It is a dream for every football player to play in a World Cup and represent his country. The World Cup is played every four years, so to have a chance to play it, you have to be efficient. Speaking of a competition you want to discover, you are going to play, for the first time in your career, the UEFA Champions League. When I arrived at LOSC, I knew it was a very ambitious club playing at the top of the table. I knew I would have the opportunity to play in the Champions League by signing here. At the start of the season, it wasn't something I thought about because I was taking game after game. And then, as we went along, we started to think about it, more and more strongly. It is the best European competition for clubs. It's exciting, I can't wait to get started. And then you can listen with your own ears to the Champions League anthem, music so dear to every footballer. To tell you a secret, I often heard players talk about the Champions League anthem. They all say that she is exceptional, that she gives the chills. When we tell you that, you want to experience it for yourself! This summer, Jocelyn Gourvennec took over from Christophe Galtier. How do you judge his first steps at the head of LOSC? We chatted when I arrived in the Netherlands. Over the days, he gives me more instructions. He is a calm person who knows what he wants. He knows how to do it. Over time, I'm sure we'll do good things together. Against SL Benfica (0-1), the team made a good performance but lacked success, like your strike on the crossbar. Is that also how you feel? To be honest, I felt on the pitch that we had moved to another level. There was a big difference in intensity compared to previous matches, from their side as from ours. With the sequence of matches, we progress, we regain form, we put our game in place. We are more and more dangerous, and we must continue. In my opinion, we are not yet 100%, including myself, but we are getting closer. I have had opportunities. Now I have to be decisive. In the stands of the Estàdio Algarve, we heard a familiar voice, that of José Fonte, who has extended his contract for another season. I imagine it is a satisfaction for you and the group to find your captain! Obviously we are happy to find him. José brings leadership and discipline. It puts us all in the right direction. With him, everyone knows what to do, and this is very important for a group. We have performed in our discipline thanks to him. The role of captain is something he has in him. It is made for this. He is preparing to join us in a match, and we also want to find him quickly. In a few days, you will face Paris Saint-Germain at the Trophée des Champions. What are the group's ambitions before this meeting? It's a final. We're going to play it to win, to lift the cup. Last season we played a very important game against them (0-1 victory at Parc des Princes, 31st day of Ligue 1 Uber Eats) . Although I have fond memories of it, I know it will be a very different game. But we will do everything to win and make our supporters proud. What are your ambitions for this season? I want us to go as far as possible in all the competitions in which we are going to play, including the Champions Trophy. We want to finish as high as possible everywhere. Regarding the championship, we will see at the end of the season where we are, and what we can do. Personally, I want to score as much as possible and be as decisive as possible. Obviously, I want to be better than last season in terms of statistics. Like any competitor. Supporters, I only have one thing to tell you: See you soon !

During the broadcast of the Orlando game after Tesho came on the play by play guy said either that “Akindele is now part of the Canada Gold Cup team” or “Akindele is not part of the Canada Gold Cup team”, but I couldn’t tell which! There was an article on Sportsnet from two days ago which quoted Herdman saying they were trying to bring another forward in, so I expect we will see someone called.

It depends on the nature of the request, no? If we are requesting because our government refuses to let us have fans, then tough titty for us. If our government doesn't allow the game to be played in Canada, then another venue must be found because the game needs to happen. In that case I expect the request to be granted by FIFA.

Breza is on loan from Bologna. I'm not sure how much they rate him though. After Pantemis let 4 in this past weekend, being completely at fault for 1, they could have given Breza the midweek start but didn't. Maybe they just didn't want to crush Pantemis's confidence though. Personally I think Breza was brought in to be 3rd choice cover so Jo could be sent on loan but I'd like to see Breza get at least one game this year.

I don't think math supports what you say above as US population is ~10x that of Canada. Edit: also your car accident "fact" is highly specious. Would like to know where that is from. Edit #2: 3,700 people die globally each day from car accidents.

Not what I said. Failing to at least make the semis would make me less than hopeful heading into WCQ. Obviously the quality of opponent and, should we lose, how competitive we are in the loss, should factor in. But in beating Martinique and Haiti and losing to USA and Costa Rica, we will have learned nothing positive about our team.

That's true but sometimes you just see talent on display and think, "there it is." I remember watching his debut and he was the most athletic guy on the field among all his seasoned Prem colleagues. I am confident he's got this, which is why I find the League One loan speculation a little perplexing.

I would rather play ES in the US vs San Salvador. They would still have fans but probably not ramped up as the ones in ES and the field conditons have to be much better. Plus no security or covid issues for travelling teams. It's a win win as ES gets to make some money with fans in the stadium in the US.

  23. This is very typical in France, and Spain as well. Perhaps more southern European countries. They'll call a game for tv and they'll make references to the nationality, to the origins, the birthplace, instead of using the player's name. They look for synonyms constantly. In print journalism as well. Also do it for coaches. One interesting consequence is that, for example for me in Spain, I know where a lot of players are from, their hometowns, however small. Or the county. I think a kind of equivalent is how in NFL or NBA you can often hear what college they went to, "the 5th year tackle out of Oregon" and the like.

So I guess my attempts failed, so I might as well post what I was going to post. It is safer in Canada because we have higher vaccination rates and lower infection rates. The rolling 7 day average in Florida is almost 9000 new cases per day. The rolling 7 day average for all of Canada is around 400 new cases per day.

A very bad development, I think hosting any of our opponents is off now with this latest stance by the government, there is no difference between a club team or national team entering our country, a huge set back!

  28. I sure am pleased Forge are out of this bubble, the injuries piled up with a couple of more last night, to play twice a week on plastic in this heat after no pre-season was brutal and Forge's depth is certainly being put to the test, I hope Forge have some starters back and can field a good side Aug 4th in the Concacaf Lg match! Kudos to Novak for showing class without over celebrating the goal vs his previous employer and Klomp seems like quite a find for Cavalry, he was dominant!

  29. We started with 20 outfield players...Davies, Larin and Ayo are out injured. That leaves 17. Sturing and Paton, who just started training with the squad, have not played yet. Theo and Pasher have barely played...so 13 players left. That leaves 2 players on the bench who have had decent minutes (Piette or Kaye and Henry or Miller if Johnston starts at RCB). Unless Paton really impresses in training, I cannot see him thrown in vs CR. We would be crazy to not call in Tesho and one of Guti/ZBG

  30. In this era of "citizen journalists" - to be very generous - I would not count on it being a coincidence. How were you lucky enough to end up watching mid-table obscure Palace and relegated Sheffield United? Generally League 1 is not outside the realm of a good move. He played in the Professional Development League (as they don't have a Category 1 Academy). His team was good, topped their division (regionally divided) and he was third top scorer on his team and tied for 10th in the league. The u23s from the Premier League 2 (up a level) play against League 1 and 2 teams in the Cup and often get beat. That's said his new manager is saying all the right things: https://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/sheffield-united-talks-are-arranged-to-decide-the-next-phase-of-these-young-players-careers-3306293 I don’t care about ‘young’ or ‘old’. I play 16 and 26 (year-olds),” Jokanovic said. “I don’t treat them like kids. I treat them like adults. I treat them all exactly the same. “I started working with them last week. Because of various things that have been going on, such as people being away (on European Championship duty), I was working with 12 players so we brought in 10 from the under-23’s to join in.” “What I am bothered about is personality and ability of course, not age,” he continued. “Personality, for me, is really important.”

Since the ES government allows them to hold the match, size of crowd allowed is a cosmetic issue. And opens the door for countries to switch venues for any spurious reasons. Also read they are allowing full stadium if there is enough vaxxed people interested in attending.

This isnt an opinion thing, he quoted 2 numbers trying to make his point and he had to admit both were wrong. Now he still has his opinion and it hasnt changed, but he was man enough to admit he didnt use good numbers to prove his opinion. Which I can respect. You pull a bunch of physcho bable about people being progagandized and cognitive dissonance out, insinuating rational posters will get it. Basically saying people who want the facts a person uses to be correct are not being rational?? I'll get it too if he comes back with some kind of fact that isnt wrong.

  37. Just speculating here but does anyone actually know if Forge applied for the NIE? The issue may not necessarily be the actual application, but the setting up of a bubble that would be required. I didn't see what Archer originally posted, but appreciated him removing it to prevent a ruckus. That said, what you are saying here makes sense. I don't view the United States as any less safe than Canada. I get the impression the players and coaching staff don't either. The view of the USA being markedly unsafe compared to Canada results from Canadian propaganda.

  40. As an aside, I am looking at that line-up and realizing it's basically MLS starters with two Liga Nos players, one of which made the 10-man list of finalists for player of the year, the other captained his side to an 8th place finish. Pretty good considering we are missing players from Besiktas, Lille, Bayern, FC Basel, Rangers and Red Star Belgrade.

Just for clarity, its not a controversial comment. The disconnect is that "safe" is extremely subjective and some people have no idea why anyone would think professional athletes would feel un safe in the United States right now. Its just strange to some. That's all. Like in BC you've got half the people acting 100% normal and the other half walking around like long tail cats in a room full of rocking chairs. When one half talk they talk about how they dont get the other half and vice versa. So that's what it is

  44. I also like Johnston playing combos with Tajon/Laryea or playing early crosses or knock downs for Cavallini. That's a part of his game that's pretty solid but we haven't seen a ton of for Canada because we tend to want to dribble to the end line or try and triangle our way into the box. A bit more mixture and we'll have more success imo, and he's the guy to provide that extra option from the right.

At the start of the year it was said that Diop will most likely be leaving Montreal at the end of this season unless he agrees to a 1A/1B role with Pantemis. The way that Jo is playing though Montreal might not even have to worry about that and go with the two local kids as a 1A/1B. Montreal's backroom staff was a mess in the Garde era and essentially let Crepeau go for free. Renard seems like he actually knows what he's doing and has so far done a good job identifying young talent and putting them in positions to shine in Montreal or on loan in the CPL.
