How anyone can complain about Herdman at this point is beyond reason. I was once in that camp, but have changed that tune drastically due to what I’ve seen. He’s brought on more coaches for help, and has added a game day earpiece to receive extra help. We’ve changed/tested our formation several times, landing on what I’ve been banging the drum for in the 352 - as I still think it suits our crop of players. We had an 8 game win streak snapped against a USMNT that cleaaaarrrly didn’t deserve that win. If there’s any talk of a firing, let it be after WCQ.

Agreed. Theo should be getting some minutes. He’s cracked a PL lineup, let him show what he can do against a proper team. He’s passed the minnow test, no reason not to give him an opportunity, especially since our attack is depleted.

  5. Is it on the record that he "unnecessarily forced players for this competition"? I haven't seen any evidence of that. In fact, I've seen the opposite. I find that surprising for someone who considered Miller "weak" against Haiti but then "sharp" against the US. Might lead one to think that you learned something about him. Maybe that he is a solid defensive optionshould we run into injuries now that he has played with the rest of the back line . Also: - Eustaquio has some offensive prowess and maybe should be pushed forward a bit but he needs more support in the middle. - The entire back line needs to work on concentration from minute 1, particularly those in the wingback role. - Still need to work on cutting through when the opposition is lying deep. - Cavallini/Larin partnership needs some work before its ready for primetime. - Johnston is solid defensively but moderately suspect going forward. - Pasher, despite solid club form, needs a few more reps with the team before he understands his role. I'm sure there's more.

  6. Akinola’s injury should not factor in to any debate about whether we should have brought our best players unless someone is going to argue that once he committed to our program we should have immediately ignored him and brought Bair or Brym instead and just hope that Ayo’s club chemistry with Oso and Laryea would be enough to get him acclimated with the full team.

  7. Just off the top of my head.. what we've learned from the GC so far: - Buchanan is a great option at LWB/RWB; - Miller is starter material on the backline; - Eustaquio is our set piece taker going forward and 3rd best player; - Crepeau is a solid option in net and comfortably #2; and - We can control games against teams not named Suriname and Haiti. The pros outweigh the cons. Of course it was the right call to bring the best squad we could. Davies rolled his ankle in training and Akinola suffered a freak injury. It happens. If not playing for Canada both things could have happened during the same week with their club teams. We are in a better position going into WCQ. Period.

I guarantee everyone here that if we win our quarter final match, and even if we beat Mexico in the semi finals, SpecialK will not say anything good about Herdman. He will either be silent/absent, or he will be on here before our first game in the Oct saying if Canada lose Herdman should be fired. Like that is the default after a hire, threaten firing before every single game, regardless of how many wins come.

I don't know if Theo should have gotten more minutes or not but one has to wonder was it worth him missing preseason with Wolves to sit on our bench?

  17. Herdman isn’t fighting to keep his job. I get that you don’t like him but FFS you can’t just make shit up. He has gotten us to the Ocho and a ball won’t be kicked for over a month in that qualification process. He is on very solid ground right now whether you like it or. It.

  18. Passing grade but not really moving the needle a whole lot for me. The match performances and results have to be measured in real time. By that I mean in context. Losing Larin, all the players out from COVID, these are real things that have real meaning. So yeah, enough to dull the short comings and celebrations for me. So far so good, has to be said. Expecting a win against Costa Rica. Larin or no.

  20. Another takeaway is the increasingly obvious #10 shaped hole in our attack. Hoilett and Osorio can play there but it isn't ideal.
    4 points
  21. That's all the more reason to have given him minutes to see how he performs. We could run into similar injury woes come world cup qualifying. It would be nice to know what you have in Theo to see if he's an option. He's at a stage in his football career that his growth could come at leaps and bounds or just stall. He's a physically mature 19 year old. He has the size and pace to compete. Whether he has the skill is something we need to find out.

  22. Watch TFC end up winning the 2021 tournament before the 2020 final happens. Then Forge beats TFC in the 2020 final. CSA: "Here is your trophy Forge, get a picture with it" Forge raises the cup and gets a picture. CSA: "Now give it back to Toronto since they are the current champs"

  23. He also tried to strangle one of our current assistant coaches. In fairness to him: (a) the assistant coach survived the attack; (b) even if he had succeeded in killing him, we have about another 4 or 5 assistant coaches these days, so attempting to strangle 1 of out of every 5 assistant coaches is actually a pretty low percentage when you think about it. 😉

  29. We just beat them 3 times in a row in under a month. Not sure what you're looking for wrt Haiti. I've been a CanMNT fan for only about 15 years, so those longer suffering fans can maybe inject some additional context. But in my experience thus far, Canada used to narrowly beat minnows (like St Kitts/PR in 2014 WCQ), 50/50 to semi-minnows (Cuba in 2012, Martinique in 2013 GC), lose outright to CONCACAF 2nd tier (CR/Honduras/Panama/Jamaica), and lose really outright to the USA/MEX. Now we're demolishing minnows, beating handily semi-minnows, TBD against second tier and competitive with USA (including our only victory in 30 years). We have clearly moved up a tranche. You could argue that Herdman is blessed with generational talent but you can't say that this is the same ol' Canada.

  31. There are likely be more hondurans who live in Houston than in San Pedro Sula. Looking at the crowd in last night’s Hon-Qatar game, there werent many empty seats. You could probably say the same for : Costa ricans in the north east of the US (eg.: New Jersey). Same for El Salvadorans living in the US. For Mexico, there were stories years ago that they wanted to play more games in Los Angeles but were rebuffed by the USSF. Given that the revenues would be in US dollars when playing in the US and that the standard of living and disposable incomes of mexican americans is higher than in mexico. I’ll say, There would be more money to be made by the Mexican FA if they played all their international games in Los Angeles The fan base (with money) for these central american teams is in the US. Thats why the US is the the only place that can host the gold cup. And the only place that will ever host the GC.

  34. Glad folks enjoyed the grade-school insult from the 70s I used in that post (dipshit), you sure had fun playing with it. BTW, I include myself as a dipshit fan on an irrelevant soccer forum, would not have it any other way. To the important points: The CMNT has had problems for decades getting players committed, because it has been run poorly. This used to mean they would not even commit to the programme at all. So we've improved, but still. We have not shown respect for players' careers, we have scheduled poorly and done lousy travel arrangements, we have demanded commitments that have hurt them at the clubs they play for. We have consistently found players opting out, even the last WC qualifiers Arfield and maybe some other A team players did so. This GC is an example. The pros do not outweigh the cons, beating Martinique and Haiti? Losing to a US "B" team? What have we learnt from that? Even if we beat Costa Rica and make semis, the lessons will only be relative. I am glad we have some players who are not here, like Kennedy, because they realised being in B2 that they'd be missing league fixtures come the serious games. Maybe as much as 8-10 league fixtures. They simply vetoed the Herdman plan and they were right to do so, they were being more responsible towards the program than the coach himself. If you do not show you care about your players, take full responsibility for their well-being, and respect such a basic concept as medical information (I have never heard a professional club coach run off at the mouth about a player's injuries, not in 35 years of paying attention to such things, not even in the 90s), you are going to find that the opting out will continue. No player is weak-minded enough to sacrifice their career for the maniacal schemes of a Dr. Strangelove at the helm. A player and his support group and agent know when they are being treated like a handy-wipe. Interesting, too, there is no other spokesperson for the team, no team manager or press person from the CSA. So Herdman is left to spin it in his favour, but just as easily find it spinning out of control. The credit he has seemed to garner could dry up as quickly as it's been put together. I see no real benefit of sacrificing the integrity of our WC qualifying campaign by unnecessarily forcing players for this competition. We are hardly learning anything about the player pool, apart from maybe that Crepeau can be relied upon and that Tajon is more than an Olympic qualifier player.

To go on a bit of a tangent, I have really liked what I've seen from Pasher in MLS and for Canada so far, losing Larin and Akinola gives him the opportunity to show more, and I'm all up for it. I have a feeling that if given a bigger role, Pasher will pull through and surprise a few, he's been a late bloomer, but so far in his career he has managed to excel at every level he's played at, and it would be such a great come back story for a guy who a year ago probably never imagined being inside the CMNT picture.

    Axel Desjardins

Looks like it was some sort of loan with obligation to buy transfer. Anyways Spezia have way too many keepers ahead of Desjardins right now and what he needs is play time! But there are some bad news... Novara have done something which makes them ineligible for Serie C 2021/2022 season. I have looked around and looks like the owner messed up a payment. They have until July 27th to come up with something or else they will be relegated... Hopefully Novara will stay in Serie C as Desjardins looks like he'll be the main keeper going into the season. If Novara get relegated, they become a semi-pro team which makes all the players free agents. I highly doubt Axel will be playing in Serie D as from what I've seen, he is clearly good enough for Serie C. I can't see another team not picking him up as a freebie.

I thought with all the injuries we would look pretty weak, but I actually still feel good about the qf. Our team is so deep and the guys can play multiple positions. This would be my ideal lineup and it still leaves us with a bench of Henry, Sturing, Kaye, Fraser, Paton, Pasher, and Corbeanu. Obviously not as deep, but can still make some pretty positive substitutions and switch up tactics. I domt know if it was mentioned much, but last game I really like how Buchanan and Laryea switched sides a couple times. Such a good way to mix up the defense and get a run at a different guy. It would actually be good to have one as a FB and one as a winger; and let them interchange.
